Taking precautions to help minimise this shit from happening–not stop it altogether because that's never going to happen; just minimise the likelihood–doesn't require "living in a padded room" and is not equivalent to it. Requiring objects that have a high potential for harm and a high ease of use as an object that causes harm to be obtained from behind the counter is in no way an insane requirement.
Like I said before, every single layer of annoyance/difficulty/risk you put in place to prevent an undesired effect occurring only serves to that end. You attenuate the total number of people who are going to go through with it. You'll never stop it from happening entirely, but you can make it less of an issue quite easily.
here in the UK we don't have machetes as a general purpose item b/c we dont tend to have thick jungle or shit like that you need to scythe but you can walk into any B&Q and pick up a hatchet, pay for it, and go then and there. some till assistants might ID you if you look young enough.
id call a hatchet way more lethal than a machete yet do i think they should be locked away? no. just b/c some arsehole might go all Lizzie Borden on a motherfucker with one, doesnt mean they should be locked away. unlike a gun (which is pretty clearly made to kill motherfuckerS) hatchets are made for a purpose other than kill motherfuckers.

Fair points, though I feel like you're being intentionally contrarian if you tell me you'd rather have to defend yourself against somebody wielding a shovel than a machete. I'd rather not find myself in either situation but if I had to pick between the two I'd take having to defend myself against the shovel. I reckon I've got a better chance that way.
this is a loaded question lol. id really rather just get the fuck away regardless of the situation. i've been twatted by a (metal, but light) kid's shovel before and even that put me into blackness for a solid 60 seconds, id hate to get stabbed with a shovel, and really facing up to a machete isnt nice either.
honestly id rather not have to "defend myself" against someone with a weapon in the firstplace

I don't remember the details from when I was in the UK (was too young to pay attention to that sorta stuff), but at least here in Australia in a few places that I've seen the hatchets you buy come blunt and you have to sharpen them yourself. I believe they provide a sharpening block with them. I've not been in a major hardware store in a while though, so I can't comment on if that's common place.

That's because a very sharp machete is a bad machete for almost all applications. Machete blades are just wedges, they aren't meant to be precision cutting instruments. If you're sitting behind someone and you chop them in the neck repeatedly with a blunt machete they'll die, shocker.

i went to B&Q the other day and all the hatchets and saws and knives were perfectly sharp. idk what the deal is with australia. for a nation of insane outdoorsmen you guys sure are squeamish about mostly-benign shit like that

No it's not. I didn't ask you a question there.
I do agree though. I'd rather not face someone with a weapon in the first place too. That's part of the reason that I think that something like a machete should be more difficult to obtain than just grabbing it off of the shelf.

A well-maintained shovel should be as sharp as a well-maintained machete, in fact.
A fucking screwdriver can be deadly VERY easily. Probably easier than a machete because it's a shit load easier to conceal.

boxcutters are literally the most "Oh Shit Fuck Christ" tool-to-weapon ive ever seen and you could safely conceal them in your goddamn hand if you've got sleeves or just tilt your wrist a bit.

A boxcutter with a fresh blade is terrifyingly sharp. I opened up a few boxes of grocery bags when I worked at Kroger to stack on the holder for clerks bagging, and I avoided the boxcutter but it cut so cleanly the fucking cardboard cut me. That taught me a lot of respect for them.
Word in the Loss Prevention circles was that LP called the Police because their policy forbids them from making a stop on someone who is in possession of a weapon, which is kinda reasonable I would have done the same thing. Apparently dispatch considered the call low priority and never showed up.
That's what I heard. This all happened late at night though and I don't think Walmart has LP working past a certain time of night so who knows. But the story is plausible because the PD used to do this shit to me too.

I hope you immediately transferred that cardboard to the Saf-T-Bin™ patented reinforced steel storage vault for all things sharp or pointy to prevent any further horrible accidents.

Nah nobody cares about clerks. If we had one of those I was never told about it. I was barely told about where cleaning supplies were stored and that was half my fucking job.

You're an idiot and you're part of the problem/reason why this country has some stupid as fuck restrictions that achieve nothing but feel good.

There's absolutely no way they achieve nothing. I'd be incredibly surprised if whatever restrictions I imagine you're referring to didn't reduce the incidence of the outcome that they were designed to lower. Now whether or not the amount is significant enough to warrant the restrictions in the first place, or whether or not the people who were driven away from X were instead driving to Y are other matters entirely and I can see arguments to those having merits on either side. But I'm entirely certain that to say that they achieve "nothing but feel good" is just wrong.
Sltungle, how are you able to talk with all of those boots in your mouth?

You know I usually roll my eyes when people complain about nanny state stuff in Australia, but if this is a common view to hold I can understand where they're coming from :v:

Airsoft for one, that's straight up illegal. Paintball is allowed only 18 and over. Self defence is borderline illegal for any weapon, especially firearms. I mean fuck, I'm not allowed to own a certain veriety of knives. But hey, I'll agree with you they achieve something... They achieve pissing off legitimate hobbyists and people who just want to get something cool to enjoy. Not like I can make something just as deadly in my garage with a file and other common tools.
"If she payed for it instead, nothing would have happened and the guy would still be alive today." Is that what they are claiming by saying "That’s the most fundamental and important failure that we see that caused the death of Grant Nelson."?
