Yeah i can't understand this decision considering other non children like products.
"Exposing what in many cases are children to external influences we have no ability to manage or look after, it's something we have to think about very carefully." This is a legit concern - albeit being literally "think of the children", but these are games with low age restrictions. Hopefully they'll find a solution beneficial to everyone.
It sounds like they're worried about users from Microsoft or Nintendo being abusive and Sony having zero ability to police it We need to form a European Union type thing for consoles now
Jim Ryan: Yeah. We've got to be mindful of our responsibility to our install base. Minecraft - the demographic playing that, you know as well as I do, it's all ages but it's also very young. We have a contract with the people who go online with us, that we look after them and they are within the PlayStation curated universe. Exposing what in many cases are children to external influences we have no ability to manage or look after, it's something we have to think about very carefully.
As nice as it is to try and make sure that children don't get exposed to any sort of vulgarities, there really isn't much they can do when someone in Call of Duty or Battlefield keeps saying "nigger" every five seconds. Unless they recruit hundreds of thousands of people to patrol online gaming lobbies to swiftly kick anyone screaming obscenities in the dick, they can't do much in that direction. Not just CoD or BF, either. Basically any multiplayer gamemode with any sort of interaction be it positive or negative with other players could lead to a violent, racist tirade being sent after ten minutes of agonizingly typing out the word "shit" on a controller. Their argument really isn't that good when they absolutely have the capabilities to enable cross-platform play.
the children are in the P L A Y S T A T I O N  U N I V E R S E and we cannot allow any external influences to taint our perfect online utopia
lets go right ahead and say that the company behind god of war isn't doing crossplay because "think of the children!" while the company that is considered kiddy by some people agreed to crossplay... good to know arrogant sony is back
You must see how terrible this argument is God of War is not marketed towards children like Minecraft is.
You must see how terrible this argument is God of War is not marketed towards children like Minecraft is.
What is a terrible argument though is how kids playing Minecraft on a Sony console are going to get exposed to the same crude blocky dicks and 8===D signs as kids on any other console, and it'd be as simple as disabling voice chat to prevent anything outside of their control, so Sony's whole thing about having control over what kids experience on their console is a load of crap.

Especially when your company is making a big push towards bring players together.

Tbh I play Rocket League on PS4 and everyone there is a rude asshole so Sony can suck my dick with their bullshit PR speak. And I'm pretty sure Minecraft has the same demographic no matter what platform it's on so, despite me not playing it on PS4, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't notice the difference between the average PS4/Xbone user, and Switch users have a complicated phone-based voicechat so it's not like they're gonna be talking shit.
