Destiny 2 Removing Item That "Shares Elements With A Hate Symbol"
Good riddance, those gloves are hideous. :v:
a lot of the armor in the game is pretty hideous tbh.
I thought it was always about topkek cookies
i miss when people didnt take these things seriously
I miss when the president of the USA wasn't potentially a white supremacist installed by the russians and the UK wasn't leaving the EU in part due to russian funding of extremist right wing minority separatist parties (nigel farage/ukip, le pen etc), and white nationalism wasn't on the rise threatening global stability and democracy in part fueled by the internets ability to link hate groups together and spread propaganda/misinformation
Not taking this kind of thing (in the more general sense, this is just a very tiny part of the overall problem) seriously is partly to blame for how we got here, unfortunately. Everyone is taking a much bigger stance against anything related to white nationalism because people are finally recognising how dangerous right wing hate groups are
tl;dr the internet is srs business and we've all realised this a little bit too late
I would argue that the kekistan flag is like Pepe.
It's a hate symbol. However, only some uses of it are hateful. Which is a very important distinction.
This wasn't a great call by bungie imo, and I think most people probably wouldn't have even noticed it. They could have also just tweaked the design a little bit, keep the theme and typography, but alter the specifics.
this is fucking embarrassing. its literally the translation when an Alliance character in WoW overhears a Horde character say "lol". who the fuck links "kek" to white supremacy. why cant people just be normal instead
I wonder if the average snowflake is even aware of this these days.
I honestly couldn't care less. If they thought it could've been misconstrued as a sign of hate then props to them for trying to make an effort. However confusingly misguided it is. I'd rather that than the opposite.
And you all know that even if you don't see "KEK", the kind of stupid nutjobs that even use such a dumb word will stretch for literally anything they can to press their views. Even if it's something as dumb as a pair of gloves in a video game that very vaguely resembles their stupid catchphrase.

I mean come on, the "kekistani" flag is literally based on the a nazi german flag + it originates from /pol/ which is a cesspool of racist shite
I would say that pepe was at least a normal meme not 100% connected to /pol/ before it was run to the ground by them, this is worse
No one took the alt-right seriously until they stopped looking like they were doing things ironically.
[editline]12th September 2017[/editline]
It's not kek itself, it's the kekistan flag.
Hi, I didn't respond to this or edit my post before because I was out, but realized I should've been clearer in it
Yeah, we should've been taking the alt-right nuts more seriously these past few years, so they didn't build up to where they are now.
But it just looks like it says kek. That's all. That's not a hate symbol, that's an old meme that dumb racists find funny too. This is like Pepe being a "hate symbol" now; just because the media is getting introduced to these things by dumb racists, doesn't mean dumb racists invented them, and I really miss when the media didn't know enough about this stuff to make stupid assumptions and false labels for them.
I read somewhere that most older /pol/ users were being ironic, but later on they attracted actual bigots, and it became hard to determine if someone was being serious or not. I am not saying that that makes it any better or that we shouldn't take bigotry seriously.

Them picking a word that literally means "lol" as their banner should really make it obvious that they were taking the piss, but then people took them seriously and this happened :v:

It was a containment board for racist shitposting because that's all /b/ was for a while and it was infesting everywhere else. However idiots tend to find acceptance amongst people ironically being idiots, but are too stupid to see it's not legit. And thus the containment board becomes the dedicated "jews btfo" board.

What made kekistan very popular was Sargon of Akkad. Who's just some "classical liberal" YouTuber. To those people that picked it up from him on such as those on twitter, the_donald, etc. it is simply a parody of what they perceive "SJWs" and whatnot to be like.
I'm not a fan of these people but I don't consider them Nazis nor that usage a hate symbol.
They only look vaguely alike if you squint. The kekistan flag has four rotary Ks surrounding a 90 degree E stylized as |||. That arm symbol thing has four horizontal bars encapsulated by media player step for/backward icons followed by I's, and only on the horizontal axis.
Really, if it was a different color palette, I don't think anyone would have ever noticed.

Bungie is probably more afraid of people finding that symbol, which looks close enough, and forming clans based around it where they shitpost, grief, and whatnot.
At least that'd be my bet.

As a company, the smartest thing you can ever do is stay as far away from the posibility of creating controversy as possible, so this is not an unwise decission to make at all.
How do people find time to care and complain about stuff like this?
It's a lot like how you took the time to make this post, basically.
No?
Imagine being this much of an anally retentive bastard. People tend to drive around in Forza with cars with /pol/ memes plastered on them, nobody actually gives a crap and nobody will become a racist because of it, and this is even worse because it's not meant to be a /pol/ meme and it only resembles it because of the color. That's it. It's literally not worth the effort to remove it. And it's a shame because I think the item looks cool.
thanks /pol/
Bungie you literally have a character called KEKSIS THE BETRAYED and haven’t removed him at all
Your being stupid.
Good imo. I'd be pretty happy with game companies removing playermade symbols that promote hate and stupid shit like that.
Haha holy shit you are so gullible it's hilarious.

Hilarious is not the word I would use.
As far as I can tell this was entirely a decision on Bungee's part. The most common response from the community has been confusion and it wasn't until a redditor linked his guess at what was being removed that people started talking about it. There was no outcry beforehand.
What is hateful about this symbol?
Kekistan is a part of dog-whistling that allows discussion of the creation of a white state (in regards to "white genocide") out in the public, where the neo-Nazis have the ability to fall back on ridicule if anyone criticizes them for talking about killing all blacks, Jews, homosexuals etc., to create their "white state", because "obviously it's just a joke, Jesus Christ look at these SJWs getting upset over nothing".
God damn I feel out of touch.
Kek always meant lol to me, all of a sudden a bunch of racist neckbeards use it on a flag at a hate rally and now you can't say it anymore. What's next, lel becomes some sort of code word for lynching, heh becomes an anti-Semitic slur, or rofl becomes a death threat?

theyll never take kek or lel away from me
its become so imprinted on me i use it subconsciously instead of lol now
It isn't just because it says kek. It looks like the flag because of the mirrored K and the lines representing an E.

makes me wonder if it actually was a vague keki flag joke added by a modeler, and after word slipped to a higher up it got nipped to avoid attention (they should have totally done it in secret, just announcing something was getting removed sparked curiosity)
I understand kek and lel and shit being silly fun stuff a lot of people don't associate with anything higher, but I just don't understand defending the deeper ~kekistan~ shit after the past year of wild politics. "It's just a joke" "they're just taking the piss" ran dry a long time ago
