Destiny 2 Removing Item That "Shares Elements With A Hate Symbol"

I miss when people didn't use these things seriously. Memes like kekistan and "hitler did nothing wrong" went from little satirical in-jokes to ideological propaganda. The fact that people don't take memes seriously and don't think they can influence thought/behavior makes them a phenomenal method to spread and normalize certain ideas.
The entire "it's just a meme dude" response shouldn't work anymore. Memes have influence, like any other type of thought. They're repeated verbatim, remixed, and used to develop a cultural in-group. You can read plenty of threads where /pol/ and stormfront users debate strategy in the spread of misinformation through memes, and anonymity allows for easy normalization of certain mindsets. Certain reddit communities are prime examples - TIA, KIA, etc devolved into hate-ridden cesspools over time specifically because that hatred became normalized through shared thought. This was sometimes (but not always) intentional.
The "just a meme" idea gives plausible deniability to people. Instead of being nazis, they're just edgelords. They've become tools of information warfare. It sucks, because I loved my edgy memes, but now they're just the perfect cover for actual nazis to pretend they're just jokesters while they normalize hatred online.
God damn I feel out of touch.
Kek always meant lol to me, all of a sudden a bunch of racist neckbeards use it on a flag at a hate rally and now you can't say it anymore. What's next, lel becomes some sort of code word for lynching, heh becomes an anti-Semitic slur, or rofl becomes a death threat?
Literally, yes. Things like kek(istan), pepe, all of that shit - they're totally innocuous. That's the entire point. They're latched on to because they have a pre-existing meaning and a pre-existing community. White supremacists have started using the "OK" hand emoji, literal milk, and way more as coded language to hide their intent.
The result is that when the ADL says that pepe can possibly be a hate symbol, the response is "haha are you fucking serious." People who call out "you used the OK hand symbol, you must be a racist" sound fucking insane. And they are, and that's the intent. If you call out a dogwhistle, every single person who isn't aware of the dogwhistle mocks you.
You can use these things, and you should use these things to prevent them from being totally repurposed by actual nazis. But the entire point is to use innocuous memes as dogwhistles to de-legitimize your opposition and make them sound stupid. It's impossible to stay on top of, and that's the purpose of it.
Someone should make a replacement/backup for /pol/ that doesn't allow actual biotry or hatred and meant entirely for shitposting.
How do people find time to care and complain about stuff like this?
Caring waaaay too much about a meme
I don't blame them for trying to squash something like this before it caught on, I wouldn't want racists grouping up in my game, but I can't help but worry how far this kind of shit could go if we carry on like this.
Racists and twats on the internet are constantly using established characters, running gags, old memes that I actually like for their dumb little dog-whistles.
If we just go "whelp! guess we can't say kek anymore, thanks dickhead" every time some group of retards decides to get an online brigade together and tie something to their shitty ideology- then it just gives them what they want: ruining things for everyone else.
Imagine if they stopped using the phrase "God Emperor Of Mankind" in Warhammer because fuck-wit racists decided a certain feeble orange president deserved the title more.

Thanks, /jp/.
Ironic shitposting is still shitposting.
I thought also that in World Of Warcraft, an Alliance player would see "Kek" when a horde player would say LOL
I actually had no idea Kek had racist background.. The more you know!
I wonder if /pol/ realizes they have the power to change things because any vernacular or symbol they adopt suddenly becomes taboo. I'm surprised they haven't started adopting more phrases or symbols.

They have realized, and been doing that for years now

Only when it looks like ⋊≡k.

It's less that it has a racist background and more that a bunch of racist morons have adopted the phrase fairly recently as part of a thing they do where they adopt innocent phrases and gestures for use in online dog-whistling.
"Kek" will always just mean "lol" as far as I'm concerned, only race war it's involved with imo is orcs vs humans.
Bungie is probably more afraid of people finding that symbol, which looks close enough, and forming clans based around it where they shitpost, grief, and whatnot.
At least that'd be my bet.
So? People can still do that by wearing all white armour and going around being "KKK" members.
Someone should make a replacement/backup for /pol/ that doesn't allow actual biotry or hatred and meant entirely for shitposting.
4chan doesn't need any more containment boards. Containment doesn't work.
Kekistan's usage is more diverse than that.
What made kekistan very popular was Sargon of Akkad. Who's just some "classical liberal" YouTuber. To those people that picked it up from him on such as those on twitter, the_donald, etc. it is simply a parody of what they perceive "SJWs" and whatnot to be like.
I'm not a fan of these people but I don't consider them Nazis nor that usage a hate symbol.
Yeah what was funny about kekistan when it first happenned was that they loved to annoy the shit out of the alt right. Of course the pushback against kekistan made it so that it got steered away from the centre and towards more right wing people. Now it's pretty much synonimous with the alt right even though it was never meant to be.

/bant/ and /trash/ are about as good as you'll get. /pol/ leaks on /v/, /co/ and /tv/ anyway.
4chan doesn't need any more containment boards. Containment doesn't work.
as a former 4chan janitor I can attest to the fact that making containment boards for idiots and satellite sites for their targets does pretty much the opposite of your intents 99% of the time
dicks
kek is only one letter away from kkk
coincidence??
4chan doesn't need any more containment boards. Containment doesn't work.
I meant like a completely different site, that makes it clear if the mods think you are actually bigoted and not shitposting, then your out.
as long as there is any connection between the two, the two will be the same, albeit the new site will be just solely trolls because no one wants to move to a new place
Then ignore the '/pol/ replacement' thing I said earlier and avoid association between the two.
