Cleveland Indians Will Abandon Chief Wahoo Logo Next Year
So representing a whole race as a cartoonish interpretation of a mythical creature which also incorporates the stereotype of the angry and looking for a fight irishman is ok but a big smiley man is bad.
Why should this matter, racism is racism.
Can you explain why you believe they shouldn't remove the Chief?
I don't know a single Native American who cares about this (or the Redskins) at all.
Why does someone have to complain before we realize that something is a tasteless caricature of a specific culture? Look at the Redskins' logo. It's much better (the name is a different matter).
Can you explain why you believe they shouldn't remove the Chief?
I think they should remove it, it does look offensive.
I also think that this logic should apply to all race/ethnicity based mascots, double standards are inherently bad.
No.
Fuck that
There is nothing shameful about Chief Wahoo.
"Oh how should we tastefully represent a group where a derogatory term for them is 'Redskin'"
"Hey about we LITERALLY GIVE THEM RED SKIN."
It's the same as having an Asian man represented with super squinty eyes and overly yellow skin. It's cartoonishly exaggerating features that a race, let alone one with a long history of being the victim of atrocities as the Native Americans which still affect them to this day, that is the reason we have banned episodes of cartoons in the first place.
Am I the only one who thinks that, while the Cleveland Indians logo is clearly a racist caricature, the Washington Redskins logo looks perfectly acceptable? To me, the Redskins logo looks like it could have been taken out of a textbook or something.

The logo is mostly fine but the name is sort of a slur and the whole concept of a team that is essentially "hey look at this minority" is kind of odd. Imagine a team called the Pedros whose logo is a reasonably accurate latino guy - not an overt blackface stereotype in the way the cleveland indians logo is, but still would probably rub some people the wrong way.
My fiance's (Secwepemc) response is "eh I mean isn't it a little late?" I agree, it's like way too late, but I'm very glad to see everything like this go away. Stereotypes make terrible mascots if not for their unoriginality

I mean even the name "Indians" is weird. In Canada that's racist af because shit they're not from India they're from Canada and we've tried very hard to erase that word from language/legislature, but apparently in the US it's still kind of ok. Not preferred, as Native American is, but people still use Indian or American Indian. Seems weird, against the fact that we've known about India India for so bloody long.
I am native/indian and personally I like the term Indian better (because native american sounds like I'm an animal being studied in a textbook, and so what if the name is used for two groups) but it is definitely less commonly preferred than Native.
The logo seriously looks like one of those racist caricatures you see in old cartoons.

Look I love the Indians but you're fucking kidding yourself if you don't think Chief Wahoo is racist at all.
Discussions about ending the use of the logo did not include deliberations over changing the name of the franchise, though opponents have also sought that over the years.
Unfortunate, but not really surprising. I wonder what that might be called if they eventually do change their name.
I don't know a single Native American who cares about this (or the Redskins) at all.
From personal experience, my mom and my grandmother (Mestizo Blackfeet) found this one pretty off-putting. That's a lot to say considering they are 'off Rez' and they generally don't care about things like the Washington Redskins and movie portrayals and all of that. It just seems a little out dated. so I'm glad to see a change, hopefully a less antiquated and insensitive portrayal; yet one that works for the aesthetic of the designs/colors, etc. of the team.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Minnesota Vikings logo abandonment when?
When the Irish and Scandinavians lobby to remove it?
I wonder if they'll do the same for the Washington Redskins too.

Why do people care so much the logo fucking sucked anyway

seriously is 'Chief Wahoo' a dear part of your childhood or something because you're acting like they just pissed on something you hold dear
is Chief Wahoo the hill you want to die on as totally not being racist

JohnnyMo said it best.

Honestly, the only thing wrong with the Vikings logo is the stupid horns. If they got rid of those, the logo would be a pretty accurate rendition of a viking. If the logo looked more like this, I'm willing to bet a lot more people would be upset about it.
If you got rid of the Vikings you'd have to get rid of teams named after Spartans as well. I don't see any reason to. The Vikings logo is non-offensive. Sort of how the Logo for the Florida Seminoles is not regarded as offensive and, as far as I'm aware, was approved by the Seminole tribe. Along with their pregame tradition of having a student dressed in Seminole warrior Osceola regalia ride out on the field on a horse.(the regalia is made by tribes people)
There's right and wrong ways and reasons to do things. I think the Seminoles are fine, but the Indians and Redskins are doing it the wrong way.
Redskins is kinda like if the Yankees were historically owned by black people and the team was called The New York Crackers instead.
The owners now might not be racist, and cracker isn't the most derogatory or most used term, but it's still fucken weird.
Hey now, the first coach of the Redskins was a white man who pretended to be a native American to get out of the draft for WW1! There's nothing racist about that!

Imagine if people defended a mascot that looked like this
JohnnyMo said it best.
Ideally that would be the case but a) there are a lot of idiots out there and b) there are forces in play that would rather not have the logo change
[editline]31st January 2018[/editline]
You have to demand change, you can't expect it to waltz over on a silver platter
The Redskins logo is way classier, the indians should take note.

Honestly I want them to change the name to the Cleveland Ents and make the mascot a Buckeye Tree Ent named Bucky. It'd be way cooler.
I'm pretty sure he was being hyperbolic about changing the vikings.
Edit:
Since the guy who posted it rated me disagree then I guess you were being serious. How can you possibly not see the difference between the Vikings and the Redskins or Chief Wahoo? A viking is a name for norse raiders. While the others are either racial slurs or caricatures. There is literally nothing offensive that can be taken from a team named the Vikings, even if the logo made them look dumb, drunk and fat. It'd be like getting offended at a team named the Cavaliers, Pirates or Blacksmiths.
