• Google revamps image search to protect Getty Images' intellectual property; removes "view images"
I've been using the Greasemonkey (and their forks) script that automatically views an image or link from Google when you open it in a new tab (I have one of my mouse thumb buttons set to this so it's easy and quick) for years. Having to click twice (once on the image then again on View) when I'm doing image collecting is such an unnecessary waste of time. Just tried it and it still works.
Do you have a link for that script? That sounds particularly useful
This was taken from a screenshot from google's forums posted on reddit, but this is one of their "excuses": It's not like the "view page" button existed for a reason, no siree. But gotta pull the classics "let's remove everything everyone uses for no reason except change".
Oh nice, they also disabled the button that let you search for the highlighted image. used it a lot to find better versions of screenshots etc considering some websites still upload images in like 240x240...
It can't be hard to add a check for the source website to their script, removing the button if the website is on an opt-in list. but no that takes more work than just deleting the button, so of course they won't

I've used this change for about ten seconds and I fucking hate it.
Even though it's right in front of my face, I still can't believe it. This is so, so stupid.
middle clicking on the image no longer opens the image in a new tab  this is probably the first time i've seen google make a change to the search that actually actively removed functionality rather than adding it
For fucks sake google.
I'd like to report that the three times I needed to find an image today, two were pinterest pages, the third was nested in a shitty forum discussion so badly that I couldn't figure out where it was without checking the page source good to know right click>view in new tab actually pulls the fullsize, wasn't aware that was a guarantee nowadays
Aaaaand this is already driving me nuts, switching to duckduckgo
Thanks google
Aaaaand this is already driving me nuts, switching to duckduckgo
I tried that for a few months last year and just couldn't fully replace functionality. Maybe it's time to give it another shot.
Is there someplace we can complain about this?
Oh nice, they also disabled the button that let you search for the highlighted image. used it a lot to find better versions of screenshots etc considering some websites still upload images in like 240x240...
tineye.com is your friend. Takes a bit more effort but it works really well.
Is there someplace we can complain about this?
You can always poke at Getty themselves, they seem to be the ones who were allowing Google direct access to the images. Hell some sites ( pinterest on occasions ) before the " View Image " button was removed, already redirected you to the actual site. So why Getty decided that everyone using Google Image search is to blame is beyond me. edit It's really rather ironic, a site ( Getty Images ) that's known to steal other photographers work from the public domain is complaining, that Google is allowing "Image Pirates" to steal their images freely and without permission.
...Why is it Google's fault that this happened? They could literally just block the google bots. Hell, they could do something that's even less effort, and use a robots.txt that just politely tells google to stop and they'll listen. Viewing an image in Google starts with the faster-loading thumbnail but will load in the full-res image, after which you can right click and "View Image" or "Open Image in New Tab" or something. It didn't remove anything but just made it less convenient. I figure Google just removed the button on the page to get Getty off their back but it didn't solve anything lmao
Has anyone made an extension or userscript or something yet?
This was taken from a screenshot from google's forums posted on reddit, but this is one of their "excuses": It's not like the "view page" button existed for a reason, no siree. This already exists. It's what robots.txt is meant for.
I fully support this move. Less people using google services the better.
Both Google and Getty will get shit for this.
Switched to ol' ducky.
Google should have blocked getty from their results entirely.
I tried that for a few months last year and just couldn't fully replace functionality. Maybe it's time to give it another shot.
You can always go for DuckDuckGo first then if it doesn't give adequate results use Google as an alternative. That's what I typically do and it works pretty well.
If you use chrome this is a really good addon; https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/view-image/ggkpgcdaaginfhgoglcgaaicdkoicnhj?utm_source=chrome-app-launcher-info-dialog been using it for sometime now.

For those of you switching to DuckDuckGo after this, also consider StartPage. It's a search engine by ixquick- uses Google results and offers more anonymity options than DuckDuckGo like browsing search results via proxy. well I have no idea how to get image links for this site now. google's cached images can't be linked.
