Listing exact chromosomes would probably actually be more medically useful than trying to shoehorn deviations into "M" or "F" (because that's pretty much all the forms expect).
That'd be neat.
This is what medical records are for, it's not a good enough reason to replace M/F which has more benefits such as easy differentiation and easier understanding for everyone

more than 99.9% of the population fits into XY or XX categories. the rest are rare genetic diseases which shouldn't be used as the basis for a whole new categorizing system when the existing F/M one works very well and I can perceive literally no benefit whatsoever to changing that
I'll just say this, You may believe that Gender and Sex are 2 different things, but both use the exact same pronouns.
If you search for either with safe search off you get results for the action of sex, and the actual definition of Gender.
Even with modern online dictionaries trying to separate the two, the common man will still be thinking of sex and gender under the old school of thought, linking the two. And I believe that in the past, Gender, as the word, was used to politely refer to a person's sex in public.
You may support the idea that Gender is not sex, but as we've seen here with this article, this concept will lead to crazy parents who refuse to call their new born daughter a female, or newborn son a male until they choose their gender. And I for one believe, this is child abuse.
This child will grow up messed up on both sex and gender.

Other than the administrative nightmare of trying to apply it retroactively, it wouldn't exactly have any downsides either to be honest. It'd be more accurate medically (is that not why people complain about things like this happening after all? Because gender isn't medically relevant), and it wont actually impact your day to day life so why even care?
There's probably not enough benefit to moving over to it, but it doesn't really have any downsides outside of redoing paperwork.

The only people who really care about your birth certificate are few and far between. I'm sure "easier understanding" is a real benefit when the people reading it should already have been wholly educated on how the forms work. It's a record of your birth, not a thing you throw at randos in the street to explain who you are after all.

The people reading it is possibly anyone, doctors read it, parents read it and sometimes you have to provide your birth certificate as identification for something. I believe everyone is taught about chromosomes in school, but that doesn't mean they practice it as day-to-day knowledge, so it can easily be forgotten.
Letting the kid grow up to decide their own gender identity is going to fuck them up? How? Please explain in a way that isn't just "Because it makes me feel uncomfortable."
Because I sure as shit would have loved to been raised like this. You know what DID fuck me up? Being raised as a person that I wasn't. Being forced into a body that I don't want. THAT fucked me up and I'm still struggling with the aftermath today and probably will for quite some time.
To all the people shitting on this: Try to put yourself in the shoes of someone who was forced to live with a body they can't stand. Imagine your parent(s) forcing you to be someone that you're not and having to live everyday as a lie. Imagine wanting to cry or even outright kill yourself every time you look in the mirror.
This parent is giving their child the ability to choose who he/she wants to be in the future. An incredible choice many of us were never given. I have incredible respect for that.
I really want to make fun of you. But I'll pass because I'm not tryna get banned.
This shit is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. It literally makes zero sense seeing as how your gender at birth is important to know because of stuff like medication effecting you differently than another gender. So, so, so, SO dumb.
