What's funny is just how lore-breaking Gwent really is. Like, in "Baptism of Fire" there's a card game brought up by a group of Dwarves (and a Gnome) called "Barrel" (Which is what ended up inspiring Gwent, so its not like they pulled it out of left field). The book then delves into the fact that card games are not popular with the human populations (who much prefer cheaper dice) in part because they lack the artistry to make good looking cards (and humans who did gamble with cards didn't really care about how they looked). To quote
Yet somehow a collectible card game took the world of the Witcher by storm :v:. Still love Gwent though, it's a lot of fun.
I mean, it's clearly not meant to be lore-friendly when it's based on characters in the game itself, and characters talk about these cards by name like it's completely normal, so it's a bit of funny fourth-wall breaking too.

I always just viewed them as having been based on Dandelion's ballads :v:
Playing through the game now, is it even worth learning how to play gwent?
Very easy to learn the basics, then just fill your deck with spy cards and gg ez 98% of the AI will get stomped
Very easy to learn the basics, then just fill your deck with spy cards and gg ez 98% of the AI will get stomped
or play it with Northern Realms and spies - stomp everybody
NR is the strongest deck by a mile in Witcher 3 tbh, but in the Gwent standalone its apparently near the bottom along with Nilfgaard compared to other decks :v:
Does anyone else feel like his quote is a little bit of a jab at the game series, and him being upset that he doesn't/didn't profit?
'I'm glad to be involved on the Netflix series, which will be the TRUE media representation of MY Witcher series, with all rights and benefits involved.'
Regardless, I think if anyone can make a great Witcher series, it's Netflix, so I'm cautiously optimistic. I wonder if they'll go for big names or unknowns.
To be honest, I'd be salty too if I made the same dumb mistake he did.
he underestimated just how crazy popular the series would get. I mean look at Witcher 1, who would think that would get popular
I'd be pretty fucked off too if someone was using my stories to make a game without seeing a cent of it.
You do realize that he asked for a lump sum instead of royalties right?
he got the money he asked for
I will only watch this if it opens with a bath tub scene!
I will only watch this if it opens with a bath tub scene!
If the series pilot doesn't open with that fucking Geralt pic, then imo that'll be a clear indicator that the whole series will be trash. :vs:
yeah, that's exactly how it is lol. To Geralt, Ciri is his daughter. He treats her as such, he'd do literally anything for her, and Ciri looks to Geralt like a father and Yennefer (reluctantly at first) as a mother. Geralt and Yennefer are certainly an interesting pair, and the the short story collection "The Last Wish" (which is also the book everyone should start off with if they're interested in reading the series) delves into their relationship. They're definitely a strange family, but a family none the less.
To be fair, The Last Wish has no mention of Ciri or Triss and most stories don't involve Yen either or her and Geralt's relationship. There's mainly one story there that involves her directly and it mostly deals with the unfortunate series of events that lead to their fates being tied together even though they don't seem to be particularly into each other.
Now, I did go through most of the rest of the Saga and I agree that the gang does end up being a family of sorts, but my point is that's hardly the one snippet I would use to describe the Witcher to someone not familiar with it.
I mean, that would be like describing LotR as "Two tiny buddies make new friends and learn about themselves and each other when they take a road trip through Middle Earth".
I'm also not sure about the "fight for truth" and "funny and constantly surprising". They're selling this like it's a Saturday morning cartoon, not a show about a universally hated bad tempered asshole that murders stuff for a living in a world full of bloody warfare, terrorism, racism and bitchy sorceresses.

Well yeah, Ciri isn't introduced until Sword of Destiny. And even then, TLW is named after the story about Geralt and Yen. It's the crux of all the other stories, which is framed around Geralt looking back at some events. Each of the stories within it set up Geralt as a character anyway: his relationships, his morals and ideals.
Also, they say that "The characters are original, funny and constantly surprising", which is true. Not 100% on the fighting for truth bit though
Yes!! I loved the books. I am so looking forward to this.
I know it won't get it, but imagining this with GoT level of production quality would be amazing.
If they exhaust the books, I hope they choose to use the same ending as CDPR and just omit the last couple of pages. Not spoilers or anything, but they both use the same ending really and the same events happen, but then some cheeky nonsense with a character living happily ever after happened.
Can't wait for an entire episode dedicated to Gwent.
I'll be disappointed if the show isn't a yugioh esque show and geralt just travels around fighting people at gwent
It will be inaccurate unless they find a way to make respawning canonical.
The actor for Geralt had better be concrete solid.
How fucking retarded is the author of the Witcher books? You always take royalties. Always. I'd take royalties over a large lump sum of cash any day. Worst comes to worst, the game flunks and you're where you always were. Best case scenario, the game explodes and you make more money than you ever thought possible.
Has to bite so bad to see the game take off whilst you sit there with your semi-decent lump sum of cash and cry about how you missed a huge opportunity.
I absolutely love the world of the witcher. It never fails to draw me in. Honestly i'm extremely fucking excited for this. I hope they keep the grimdark atmosphere from the games. Constant misery and hard living for the population, besieged by unspeakable horrors. I think if its to be good, they're going to have to make the monsters genuinely scary. Draw the viewer in with a sense of fascination as they watch geralt cut down something. Plus, the bonus of a TV series means that the fights can be a lot cooler, like the the launch trailer for the witcher 3. It's a bit simplistic in game (as in, not as visually interesting, the combat is the game is excellent), but they can really go all out with the choreographing and make some potentially cool as fuck fight scenes. A witcher's gear is full of a load of cool shit that i'm looking forward to seeing. Unfortunately, this probably won't come out until 2018, or maybe 2019 if we're unlucky. Since it doesn't seem they've even started filming yet.

The only good thing is that actors really did their best but the whole thing is a mess.
Damn.
That guy looks like a really really poor version of Poor Man's Orlando Bloom.
While I wouldn't mind it plot based, I would appreciate filler episodes where Geralt takes a contract, to see him investigate the circumstances behind his contract and track whichever monster might be responsible, to see how he prepares himself for the fights and how he recalls the strengths and weakness of each individual monster, and the necessary tactics needed to fight then. Something like the Noonwraith quest from the prologue of Witcher 3 is an excellent example of the kind of filler episode I would like to see from the series.
I have a question for you: would you prefer the series in English or in Polish with subtitles? I find this interesting, because some people claim going Polish would give the series unique atmosphere.
I suppose this could be compared to dubbed animes :v:

The best they could do is have a sub and a dub version, if possible.

Considering the definitive version of Witcher 3 would be in English (stated so by devs), let's leave it at inglesias

Of course, but if you had to choose one of them, then which one?

Yeah, that's true, except this time CDPR isn't here, so it might be somewhat different.
I'm feeling quite apprehensive about this, Witcher 3 felt like a definitive ending for Geralt and the gang, and after that Blood and Wine felt like a nice little retirement party for Geralt and in my case Yen. Even if it's an alternative world I can't imagine it feeling right to revive those roles. Especially with real life actors, making a Geralt that doesn't look silly is something that took CDPR 10 years and 3 games to pull off. I also can't imagine watching the entire thing without constantly comparing it to the game, which is going to be hard because TW3 is one of my favourite games of all time.
If it's a set of original characters or more Ciri, I'll probably be more excited than more Geralt.

What? This is going to start with the books, not the games.

I know, but the final game still felt like a retirement of the Witcher all together, whether we're going back in time or not. I've now played 3 games and read 4 books (sorry haven't read all of them) with Geralt and the gang, and 2 of those felt like a final goodbye, adding a multiseries TV show onto that seems a bit excessive. I'd just be more interested in them following a different set of characters.
Sorry(?)

Sorry to break it to you, but this series is mainly aimed at the people who don't know The Witcher, not the fans.

Well fair enough then, don't see why that means I can't give my opinion, as a fan.
The books were a pretty definitive ending and they still made games taking place after them.

To be fair, having played/seen both versions, I personally think that english one is a little inferior
Generic Shakespearean english aint got nothing on staropolska mowa
But that's obviously only true if you can speak polish to appreciate it, for english audiences the only upside would be that they can laugh when someone says kurwa

Pretty sure he sold the rights back in like the early-to-mid nineties, in Poland of all places. Considering how long it took for a game to even come out, I don't think you can really call him downright retarded for taking the cash.
