• Nintendo suffers $97 million loss despite Mario Kart success

Not really surprising. 1. Mario Kart was released in June, meaning the tanking sales in April and May are still in that. 2. There wasn't really anything big released for 3DS, next quarter ORAS is being released. Also anyone saying that the reason they're losing money is because of mario is an idiot, no arguments about it.
im not saying mario is bad or that nintendo should stop with mario, but that theres a lot of mario and a lot of it is very similar. nintendo should try out more new ips. spittoon looks good. for example. it just seems like they rely on established ips way more than new ones and people r starting to get tired of the same thing.
They have a lot of IPs but no cares about them and want the next Mario or Zelda instead, and then they complain about those games being the same and say they want new IPs. They can't please everyone.
Yeah the N64 had a a good amount of Mario Party games but they've been slowing down on releasing them. And Mario 64 came out in 1996, 8 games in 18 years isn't all that awful. And there's been at least one MK game per console. They really don't shit out games at the pace people seem to think.
what im getting at is that a lot of the games are very similar, not that nintendo releases too many games. too many that are similar perhaps.
what im getting at is that a lot of the games are very similar, not that nintendo releases too many games. too many that are similar perhaps.
They have more differences than the average EA sports game or CoD and those come out every year. The complaint about Nintendo's games being to similar isn't a very good one when you take the time between games in to consideration. [editline]30th July 2014[/editline] But even then CoD, Madden, Mario Kart, Mario Party, and even Zelda will be very similar to previous games since they share the same basic gamplay as their previous games. The only difference would beings like rosters, maps, graphics, story, gimmicks, etc.
Despite how well Mario Kart 8 did, with the amount of Wii U's out there, which isn't a lot, it can only do so well. :( Also lol the only time I've ever accused Nintendo of re-hashing was with the New Super Mario Bros series. Everything else plays really different.
the super mario world re-hash side scrollers everyone nags about are just filler to let the super young players trod through, though. They're not part of the main franchise, just side things to have in the library. I'm not a fan of how many versions of the little junkers they've released, but I at least have enough sense to understand they're not serious successors to anything in the franchise. They live off of brand recognition to boost the success of quirky ideas. It's kind of a Mickey Mouse effect, where you have those personalities that you can just throw into whatever and make it work, and people don't care about canon timelines/universes or anything. You know the basic dynamic between characters without having to go through any exposition. Porno storylines, if you will: This is person A, this is person B. You've seen what happens between these two character archetypes and everybody wants to get to the fun part fast. No need to understand more than "this is why they're here this time" and then you jump right to the gameplay

Even if actual gameplay is fun, Mario is Mario and eh. You'd probably get tired of watching porn with same actors every time anyway, no matter how hot. It's not that Mario is bad, it's that there is so much of him.
We need more Luigi and Wario
I know how much some people love the Mario and Zelda franchises, but it wouldn't hurt Nintendo if they stopped making the same game. They've been doing it for literally 30 years and NO SHIT it's not helping.
You serious? Nintendo do shake it up a lot with their franchises you know. The IP might be the same but the gameplay is often very different.
New Super Mario Bros, New Super Mario Bros 2, New super Mario Bros Wii and New Super Mario Bros U are pretty much the same game though with small differences.
I'll give you that, but the first was a DS game right? so the wii version would fall under a port.
Waluigi love? I don't know if he's even had his own game yet, poor guy.
Waluigi vs The World coming to the PS4 in 2016
I love my Wii U, but anyone thinking that Mario Kart would be enough to pull it out of its financial rut is naive as balls.
Dude, the gameplay is what makes the game.
so don't disregard the huge changes in gameplay mechanics and world interaction that each of the games has stop being dumb lmao it's like complaining the mgs games are always about sneaking only even LESS applicable have you lookede at any of the myriad of mario RPGs that nintendo has released? those are part of the mario franchise. mario has dipped a toe in literally every genre and you're complaining that it's "always the same"
i'd buy more games, but they're so god damn expensive and i don't think they're worth that much even used games are rare, and nintendo won't earn anything from those
More Metroid please
We need more Luigi and Wario
I would actually LOVE a year of the WAH.
Nintendo is like a religion, if you criticize it in any way people will jump down your throat.

Tell me, did you stick with Sony or move to Xbox or PC later?
chill out dude
people keep saying the nintendo makes the same games over and over but uh... no? if you honestly think that super mario 64, sunshine, and galaxy are the same game, get your eyes checked. Of course basic gameplay stays the same, it's the same goddamn franchise, it's the content that matters
Mate, come on. There are 37 Zelda games. 19 Mario games. When's it time to call it quits and make a new IP?
Nintendo is like a religion, if you criticize it in any way people will jump down your throat.
I would say the same for any game company.
Nintendo is like a religion, if you criticize it in any way people will jump down your throat.
XBox v PS threads are pleasant
I think many are getting tired of same characters. Even if actual gameplay is fun, Mario is Mario and eh. You'd probably get tired of watching porn with same actors every time anyway, no matter how hot. It's not that Mario is bad, it's that there is so much of him.
Problem is the consumer world is telling them that making new IPs is almost a waste of time, judging from sales of new IPs they've stewed up (Eternal Darkness, Freakyforms, Rusty, Steel Diver, Pushmo/Crashmo, Dillion, Denpa Men, etc). It's easy to say that new is good but it's hard to defend it when all of their new stuff doesn't even go near enough sales. The only ones I can think of that sold well were the casual ones like Brain Age and Wii Fit, and I guess Pikmin could count, and Chibi-Robo ended up getting some sequels. The only reason they make so many games with Mario and Zelda and all that jazz is because it's easier to assume people don't want to touch something unfamiliar now unless they've tried it before. Think of Sony remastering games, Microsoft making the Master Chief collection, and so many games getting reboots. These are really easy to sell because they already have a name for themselves. Mario is no different. I guess it's easy to blame them on not advertising (although they've been showing a lot of non-Mario games at E3). But try to sell everyone on something with an unfamiliar face, let's say Codename STEAM. "It's turn based, but it doesn't look like Fire Emblem..." "When's a new good Paper Mario?" "I'll pass, it doesn't good as good as *blank* so I won't bother with it." But imagine Mario Party and Mario Kart. Are these Mario games? Technically. But they're their own kind of games that wouldn't be such a huge household name and played by so many if it didn't have the name attached to it. These still sell even with the mediocre advertising they do. Sure, I'm getting bored of the fat Italian bastard a bit too. But the only way for them to start making newer stuff is for consumers to put their money where their mouth is. "We need mature games on the Wii U!" "Okay, let's try Devil's Third and Bayonetta 2, if those sell we'll seek out more mature games." Sales come in, they did well, time to invest. "We need more new IPs?" "More? Jesus, fine, maybe another new one." That one sells, they invest into it. Pushmo just got a sequel and I'm going to buy it when I get my money because it's a fun puzzle game and I'd like to see more in the future. Let's just hope indie games start teaching more people to try new things. Shovel Knight, for example, did pretty well. Maybe then you'll start to see more unfamiliar faces with old. If there's anything Nintendo should do now, it's to make more free demos of their new IPs on their store. I wrote a shitload of words and I can't remember if it was even a coherent thought so forgive me :v:
Mate, come on. There are 37 Zelda games. 19 Mario games. When's it time to call it quits and make a new IP?
can you tell me about the 15 zelda games I seem to be forgetting
look at all them video games
You wouldn't believe how many people stopped paying attention to Nintendo's output after Gen5. That's if they even cared to begin with and didn't grow up with a C64 or something (a common case in Britain, I hear.)
