What's so special in Natural Selection 2?
What's so special in Natural Selection 2?
Unique combination of FPS and RTS gameplay, gunplay is solid for an indie title on a proprietary engine. Alien gameplay is something new. [editline]27th December 2012[/editline] It also has quite a bit of depth, which is nice in this era of incredibly easy to play casual shooters.
"It's ironically being a generic third person shooter to make you think man" no they just focused more on the story than the game play. which is okay, a lot of games do it, but it's silly to rationalize it as the developers trying to be meta and make a statement.
It is, though. They use it to mock generic shooters.
It is, though. They use it to mock generic shooters.
Theres no mocking though. That's just how the game plays. I have no idea how people can take mediocre gameplay and turn it into some kind of meta-observation by the developers. Like it's not enough that it is a decent third person shooter with a genuinely interesting story, but that it's one flaw was purposefully placed in the game. I don't buy that. I think they just went the safe route with what worked, didn't try to compete with CoD or Battlefield on who can have the most setpieces or the best shooting (because they know they would lose) and instead focused on something few other AAA releases would, the storyline and characters. [editline]27th December 2012[/editline] I don't even know how it's supposed to be a riff on other games when other games handle shooting and movement in general far better than Spec Ops does.
There is the idea that gunplay and movement was intentionally made to feel similar to "generic shooters" to make the game enticing and comfortable to play for that same demographic, to lure them in. And the movement and gunplay (particularly the cover system) does indeed feel extremely similar to Gears of War 3 (widely claimed "generic shooter").
I'm fairly certain the Yager did think that they'd made a game that was genuinely fun to play. They seemed pretty enthusiastic about it in all the interviews I read with them, though they usually wanted to talk more about the setting and characters rather than the gameplay - probably because they knew they didn't bring anything new to the table. Honestly, I think that the mediocre combat was more or less unintentional, but in hindsight I guess the general mindfuck nature of the plot adds a certain meta quality to the shittiness.
