I hate the argument that "ah well it was so hyped that it could never live up to expectations, it's a good game really"

What the fuck.[/QUOTE]
Why are people having such a fit over that? Duke Nukem 3d had the same kind of pod babes all around every level, and they all also said things like "PLEEEEEASE KILL MEEEE" when you interacted with them. I don't see how it's anything new to be freaked out about.

And I don't see why people hate the game so much. I mean, yeah, it wasn't amazing, the gameplay in the action parts was pretty dull and the levels were kinda linear, but all the brilliant environment interaction partially made it up for the other parts. Besides, it's a game that was pieced together by gearbox from a very unfinished version, so of course it's not great.

I agree. A game's quality should be a function of its development time.
Duke Nukem Forever was a game in which the developers tried to keep up with current popular trends throughout the entirety of its development in order to stay relevant. In doing this, they forgot what made Duke Nukem 3D as fun and as satisfying as it was. This should have been clear to everyone who knew about DNF's development history — Marketing, unfortunately, was very promising about the contrary.
Duke Nukem Forever was 3D Realms' falling. As far as I see: All Gearbox did was take what 3D Realms had, and turned it around with a little extra polish as fast as possible for 2K, to try and recover whatever costs were lost in development.
I hope Gearbox speaks out about their side of the development though. I'd be interested in hearing exactly what they went through to get DNF out there.
