Honestly who keeps choosing the names? This is stupid. [sp]and who DESIGNED THAT CONTROLLER?![/sp]
Everyone here seems to have been expecting Nintendo to go hardcore so they're pissed off. I don't know why anyone would think that considering the Wii's been far more successful than the Xbox 360 or PS3
I thought they were going hardcore. They emphasized that the mini games weren't retail games. They showed a multitude of 3rd party developers obviously impressed with the hardware, which basically showed that there was going to be some strong 3rd party support, and they also showed a couple AAA titles such as BF3 and Archam City. Not to mention they are improving the online.
Yeah, the screen on the controller seems to be an eerie reminder of the Sega Dreamcast which, well, look how that turned out. From what they've shown though, it seems like the controller does have some independent functions making it interesting separate from the console itself.
Looks very uncomfortable, seems like Nintendo is forgetting how to appeal to anyone besides a casual gamer.
are you kidding me? with more power than a ps3 and games like battlefield 3 and metro this thing is appealing to more than just the casual gamer [editline]7th June 2011[/editline] you don't even have to use that controller guys its optional
Don't see how this is a bad idea but since a majority of the folk here seem to think otherwise lets just go over a quick pro/con list: Pros

Playing a multiplayer FPS in the same living room and you don't want friends screencheating? Whoop-dee-doo problem fixed with the TV probably acting as a scoreboard. Think this might put a strain on your new console? Just think of all the previous 4-player split-screen games on other systems. In theory it shouldn't be too different and the quality won't decrease by much
Are you young, the Wii U is permanently hooked up to the living room TV and your parents want to watch some Friends? Shed no more tears with being able to play it anyway!
High-def, although it's a very common phrase thrown around a lot nowadays, means quality in the palms of your hands!
Reported backwards compatibility with all your Wii games, so your old games still have a use after you trade your Wii in for game cash.
The power of this console already wipes the output quality of the big two (PS3/X360 if that wasn't clear enough).
Touch-screen on the controllers for, well, touching. Anybody who would oppose this feature might not have had a pleasant experience with one before (in which case sucks to be you).
Cons

No news on the cost. This can possibly mean they are trying to cut production costs to make it cheaper (have to admit, this might burn a big pocket in the average gamer's wallet).
Unless there is some incredible soft fabric that injects relaxing and invigorating endorphins into your hands at the back of those controllers... that's going to be rather uncomfortable to wield.
It's going to be viewed as a gimmick, no matter if the Wii U becomes the greatest gift to gamers everywhere (wild example, don't take seriously). If the general public says so then it usually is.
On the matter of cost, imagine if you broke the controller somehow... yeah. You think propriety controllers for PS3 and X360 were expensive? Think again.
Ultimately it comes down to the games that sell the console. If the games aren't made using the given features in a fun and innovative way then that will hurt sales. I have put this under cons because there are really only a few Wii games that take advantage of the then unique controllers. If the game developers stuff up then that's the console going through a premature death.
I think I got the major points down in a hopefully unbiased way.
I like the idea they've got there of using the controller for Augmented Reality...think of what a FPS would be like with that!
I love the controllers. They make the wiiu portable since it can stream to it the whole game as well. [editline]7th June 2011[/editline] It broadcasts it's video signal using wifi, so it's not like it will be a weak connection.
I have a feeling this is going to be really expensive.
aaand I have to say Nintendo did an absolutely awful job presenting this thing. I, along with many more, thought it was nothing else than a new Wii controller.
Completely agree, I thought this was just a new controller and was disappointed. I actually had to do some research to find out this was an entirely new system. I was wondering for the whole time how they managed to improve the graphics when they said the images are wireless transmitted. That's the new console. They completely shunned it, it was a blur in the background which was easy to mistake for the oringinal Wii given the similar shape.

looks like a cheap dvd player
I feel like people consider everything that isn't "traditional" to be a gimmick now. 3D, motion control, the New Controller's... stuff... Personally I'm excited to see if developers really make use of it. I mean, I guess if it doesn't get used it becomes a gimmick, but just calling everything gimmicky causes developers to not even bother.
I dunno what lots of you are complaining about. Looks pretty good to me. I'm sure the edges of the controller fit to your hand comfortably enough, like 360 controllers do. And the fact that I don't have to be using the TV to play is pretty neat actually. Shame I can't use it as a regular handheld outside of the living room though. I wonder what the wireless range on it will be.
looks like a cheap dvd player
Well, considering the fact they almost completely neglected to show it off, I think it might just be a prototype.
Looks awkward to use
As innovative as the controller might be, it looks very awkward to hold. Even more so than the "Duke" Xbox controller.
.....Fucking called it. The only thing that got me interested was the more Developer friendly they were getting but even that seems like it'll be different. That's the impression people get from things and gimmick is an impression.
Hey friend, I just bought the new Wii, care to try it out? Why sure old pal. Can we play this game on multiplayer by the way? Sure, let me just check the controller pri- HOLY MOTHER OF SATORU IWATA. You're playing this on single bitch
The price of the controller still hasn't been announced yet, guys. Let them make it official first, and THEN you can bitch about it. Honestly, pre-emptive bitching like this is just...retarded.
The bird tech demo was really good to be honest, the rest of the show was them previewing Wii games on it. I mean honestly, if you want to win customers, don't put old gen games in the fucking preview. I do hate that controler, it is going to make gaming on the Wii U far more complex than it already is. However I think i'll wait for Sony and Microsoft to unveil their next gens before I decide to buy a new console.
Wii is a shitty name Wii U is even worse. Who the fuck is coming up with these names?

For the multiplayer games they showed Wii remotes being used.
If the online is as good as they're implying it will be, I really hope Valve takes interest and puts Steam on Wii U. Hell, at least the online won't be hacked. Portal with the Wii remote...that would be pretty sweet. THEY BOTH PRINT MONEY!!!
The Wii U console is backwards-compatible with all Wii accessories. If you don't like the new controller, you can just use your old controller. No big deal. http://press.nintendo.com/E32011/ Straight from the Wii U fact sheet. Username: E32011, Password: nintendo

The console itself looks kinda nice, instead move around and look like a retard. you just sitt in the couch and play like the normal times, if I understand it correct. what I hate about the console is the name.
the name might change, like they did when they changed from revolution to wii just dont know why they didnt make a new name for this from the start though
The controller feels like a Samsung Galaxy Tab
the name might change, like they did when they changed from revolution to wii just dont know why they didnt make a new name for this from the start though
The "Revolution" was the Wii's code name. Just like how "Project Cafe" was the code name for the Wii U. The name ain't changing.
