Uh. The original Counter-Strike was a mod. Team Fortress Classic was a mod. Red Orchestra was a mod. And many others. I believe the original Day of Defeat was a mod as well.

GMOD was not the first one.

DOD was not only a mod but the mod to retail version had like no changes between them.
