Actually, I retract my earlier statement about CS. Fuck Clear Sky. Even as a SoC fan, The awesome Red Forest segment is outweighed by most of the game, and they fucked with the damage scaling and as someone said the gunplay feels off so the combat is downright infuriating if you are playing on master. It was literally an overpopulated version of the zone, and it felt more like "Stalker - ACTION EDITION" then anything else. Both SoC and CoP are fun without mods, CS was NOT - and it was the sole reason it took me so long to play CoP, because it completely burned me out on the games. And the faction missions were laughably broken.
Clear Sky is the only one I would reccomend modding from the get-go. The Faction War mod puts a nice spin on things, by improving the gunplay and the main 'new feature' the game was supposed to be selling. It's more of a free-roam shooter that way, but you are missing very little by missing out on the plot of CS. [editline]27th July 2013[/editline] As it is right now, here is my preferred setup - LURK for Shadow of Chernobyl - can't beat the brutality of the gunplay, and the unusual gun mechanics. It is interesting to have to manually fight recoil by moving your mouse rather than the game doing it for you. Also I consider the subtraction of artefact 'buffs' to be a good thing, as they are more of an economic good to be sought after than a pair of magic boots. TFW for Clear Sky - lets you explore the mechanics of the game rather than rushing you through the plot, also you get to play as any of the factions and get caught up in all sorts of battles. It makes the faction wars the core focus of the game. MISERY mod or RCOM for Call of Pripyat - MISERY is miserable, but realistic and refreshing in it's own light. RCOM is closer to the vanilla experience, and mostly just overhauls combat and AI mechanics.
Highly recommend you get this, STALKER SoC is my favourite game of all time.

If you're considering mods for COP, make sure you get this: http://www.moddb.com/mods/stalker-misery By far one of the best and atmospheric mods for COP, they're releasing Misery 2.0 on the 31st.

[sp]I enjoyed Misery, but I still prefer Redux for reasons that conflict with one another.[/sp] Then again, it may just be that I am so used to this 'brutality' that Misery offers that it's more of a walk in the park. PeopleSoup sort of spoiled me on the ballbreaking end.

I've got a big bottle of Stolichnaya when it comes out so I can drink Vodka every time I need to in game. I wouldn't call it the 'best' mod, but it has some amazing features and improvements that make it more 'real' than most STALKER mods. I've put more than a thousand hours into the STALKER universe (though Steam has lost track a few times in the time I've owned it) and MISERY does a damn good job of making it as immersive as it should be, making me feel like I myself am alone in the Zone. It is similar to LURK in that regard, though the enemy's aim is more forgiving in Misery.

Get SoC, play it, mod it and then move on to Call Of pripyat. Clear Sky does not offer too much compared to CoP.
