What's the age requirement for applying?
What's the age requirement for applying?
I'd assume legal age for working an up, since they said they don't care how old you are in the comments.
I'd assume legal age for working an up, since they said they don't care how old you are in the comments.
So technically I could get a job there even though im 16? :o
Yeah I'd assume so. That is if they hire you. :P
That's a lie because I'm applying. :v:
Oh oh oh, don't be so cock sure!
Yeah I'd assume so. That is if they hire you. :P
Hmm im pretty decent at writing i think So Im thinking about applying
So technically I could get a job there even though im 16? :o
I'm pretty sure some very big games journalism names (Kieron Gillen, Brendan Caldwell and Quintin Smith) all started very young. Quintin isn't even thirty (I think) but has freelanced in games journalism since 2004 which means he would have been below 20, I'm pretty sure I know for a 97% fact that Brendan Caldwell (now the editor in chief for Eurogamer) started at 16. They want someone they can mold. Age doesn't matter.
A good friend of mine applied, and since he's a really good writer I have no doubts he'll be accepted.
That's a really big claim. The number of people sending in applications would be massive. Whatever you think about Rock Paper Shotgun, this position is like the entryway into games journalism. They have the contacts and they have the reputation that you can launchpad your way from here to anywhere. And they'll be about the only website to advertise a position like this and then really give you a good environment to learn from some excellent games journalists (not just the people at RPS). Quinns runs Shut Up and Sit Down with over 80 000 subscribers thanks to RPS and probably lots of talent too, but mostly RPS. I mean, congratulations if your friend does get in, but there is massive competition and having "no doubts" is pretty crazy. I'd like to meet your friend if you honestly have no doubts. Or at least, read some of his stuff.
My only concern is the CV/portfolio, I mean I don't really have something to show right now as of this moment
Working in the games industry would be a dream job for me and you just made me inspired sir, thank you
just swear to me you won't end up like kieron gillen or quintin smith i'll put a good word in for you bub
just swear to me you won't end up like kieron gillen or quintin smith i'll put a good word in for you bub
But they're both beautiful.
But they're both beautiful.
I disagree, but each to their own
I disagree, but each to their own
I just can't comprehend why ;-; :v:
"RPS likes to support feminism, THUS THEY ARE TERRIBLE!!!"
No, that's why we hate Kotaku
Sent in my app, been hobby writing for 3 years and freelancing for 2. Hopefully going to nail a job finally. Wish me luck!

EDIT: also since a ton of FP'rs are applying we should all post our articles once they've picked a winner (or even now i dun care)
wow now i feel like a massive fucking prat for having sent in my extremely sorry excuse for an application. EDIT: also since a ton of FP'rs are applying we should all post our articles once they've picked a winner (or even now i dun care)
Don't be, I'm not in it for the money. Although it is a very nice plus I would like some professional experience in the field. I used to write commissioned articles for Yahoo!'s Contributor Network, but wanted a more game related environment. I swapped to GameSkinny which has been great, but now I'm looking for that professional side. Particularly in PC games, which is what RPS is. Also it wouldn't matter at this point, since your article has the earlier timestamp if they see someone copied your article then their app would just get thrown in the trash.
And keep in mind they're after less experienced, not more.
I hope they accept volunteer experience, I've written for my school newspaper for a year and for a large gaming community for 3 months. It would be great to get a job with them, but with some of the apps that were sent in, my hopes aren't too high.
And keep in mind they're after less experienced, not more.
How is this for inexperienced?
Rogue Legacy Rogue Legacy is a mash up of two of my favourite genres; platformers rougelikes. In Rogue legacy you run through a procedurally generated castle, killing monsters and looting chests until you inevitably die. Most rougelikes end there, maybe congratulate you on your death sarcastically and then you start all over again. Not here though! The gimmick in Rogue Legacy is that when you die, your son with ADHD and the ability to fire knives out of his arsehole takes over to avenge you. Oh. Great. So not only did you die a slow agonizing death at the hands of a flying canvas, but now your family name gets to be sullied by your disappointment of a son charging head first in to the first spike wall possible. When your jittering midget son inevitably dies you find out that he apparently shagged some poor woman and had a child with her. And that kid wants to avenge you too. Oh boy, this ones even worse... Now the entire screen is upside down! In Rogue Legacy each heir has a different class, spell and 2 traits. The classes and spells are all excellent, but the traits range from useful to frustratingly handicapping. The mechanic of changing handicaps and buffs works surprisingly well in a rougelike environment. One minute you're be growling at your newest heir for having dementia, and the next thanking him for creepy dead feet so he wont trip traps. The different randomized spells offer interesting ways to kill the creeps in the castle. And once your freakishly tall, insane daughter is killed by a headless horse, the loot she collected gets funneled in to upgrades and equipment to aid her heir in besting the ever-changing castle. And the cycle only ends once you defeat all the bosses.
They emphasized the important part was the article you wrote.
I wouldn't be so negative. They emphasized the important part was the article you wrote.
Well that's exactly it. I'm not sure what to write about. I do best when I just write standard news, reporting on announcements and the like, but it sounds to me like they want a review or at least something special.

And no, it's not a review, it's not a series, it's just news.

If people wanted dry news on the latest CoD or ass creed they'd go to one of the numerous sites that do just that.
just swear to me you won't end up like kieron gillen or quintin smith i'll put a good word in for you bub
Thanks so much man!

But they are looking for someone to train into writing for RPS. Someone with a different insight. Not an RPS writer.
more like RPS write consistently terrible pageview headlines and one of the head writers is a colossal manchild who is incapable of taking criticism
Didn't they stop making PAX articles because of some issue with Penny Arcade? [editline]13th July 2014[/editline] Yeah http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/09/19/to-boycott-pax-or-not-to-boycott-pax/
I think I'll write about Dawngate, thoughts?
Thanks so much man!
alright I feel guilty now - I was using a phrase, not sure if I can actually put in a good word for you however, if it comes down to a vote or some social media nonsense, I will vote for you joshuadim
