I think the problem with that is that they mixed the single player and co-op together in a way which just doesn't work. I think that if you want a great co-op experience, they have to be seperated. Take a look at Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, or Portal 2, those were the first 2 games to come to mind that had amazing single player, and co-op experiences, and they weren't a part of the single player campaign (Their stories did mix together however, but it worked fine).
But even in portal 2 the singleplayer campaign was amazing and the multiplayer one was just puzzles puzzles pick up disc of important data give it to glados puzzle puzzle, nothing even storyline related happened until the very last cutscene, whereas the single player experience was completely different and all round more enjoyable, for me at least, and I feel having another uncontrollable player would spoil some of it

It's no different from just taking a walk outside. There's going to be at least one asshole wherever you go. It's just a case of deciding whether or not you think the game's fun enough to compromise playing with 1 or more asshole(s).
I have learned to stop playing MP games altogether, because I get bored within a month or two and it seems like a waste of money. I wish I could enjoy a game like CSS and play it every single day of the week for five years like some people can, as that would save me a lot of money. Instead of I have to buy from the reduced pool of SP games which are getting shorter and shorter and buried under the expanding MP component because that's what people are interested in now. If I complain how some campaign is short or they could have done a better job at it I get comments like "Who buys RTS for singleplayer?" or the plain old "Play the multiplayer then".
Give me a year without any MP games being released and I'd be happy.

A game with a good singleplayer could be as pointless as reading a book
But books are cool what kind of monster would consider books pointless
