[editline]29th February 2012[/editline]
Can please someone explain the difference between an app and a program?
There is no difference.
lol those programs wat
Guys, Im just saying, give it a try before you bash it. You may like it.
Can we change it to the normal desktop like we can when it's released? (or so I have been told) If we can't, then I'll just wait.
Yes, you can. On normal desktop PCs (and most laptops) only the start menu is Metro.
Guys you realize Metro is NOT meant to be used at all for normal desktop usage, it's designed to be used only for tablet/touch devices But since they figured it would be best to unify everything, you can use metro on the desktop and use the desktop GUI on a tablet
Don't care about Metro if Aero is an option, the most important thing is what have they upgraded in the OS to make me want to change from W7.

All those Windows apps that add a bunch of crap to your start menu won't be in folders anymore
It's not like you totally can't sort them into a separate group and keep them away from your own applications is it. Oh wait, you can (according to various development blog posts). [editline]1st March 2012[/editline]
Metro is the start menu.
And how often do you use the start menu for extended periods of time? Rarely? Ok. Metro works as a start screen, it's just something you aren't used to so it scares you. It still has the functions from the old start menu that most people rely on (searching, which is a fair bit faster apparently). But without the pain in the assness of the buttons being fucking tiny for such a core function. It isn't perfect for desktop use, no. But it isn't unusable. It should work fine for basically everybody, with power users and megaspergs being the only group to complain constantly.
Gross interface. Maybe it's just me but I'm not a huge fan of that simple box style.
Please tell me thats not what it looks like when idling... Why can't they just stay with W7 and further improve it?
Wait, so why is my desktop becoming a phone? Can they just improve the performance of Windows 7 and call it a day. Remove unneeded Microsoft applications Improve performance Lower resource usage ??? Profit (What i thought is funny is how in some games nowadays, you are recommended to have 1GB of ram for Windows XP and 2GB for Windows Vista/7)
I wish windows would do what apple have started doing, and release updates to Windows every year for £20. This 5 year gap with huge changes isn't working for me anymore.
So after one day using it: I really don't like Metro. The App System is complete bullshit and kinda eliminates multitasking. For example I can open up the Chat-App in Fullscreen or pin it to the left or the right, but it takes away the full left or right side and the desktop itself rearranges so it fits into the rest of the place. It looks nice, but sorry this is bullshit. I can play Solitaire only in fullscreen... wow thank you... I have a second monitor, and while I can use it with my installed programs like with firefox, the apps only work fullscreen on my main monitor. And yes I really tried to use Metro, (as Microsoft forced us to do so with the consumer build. Windows OS without programms being able to run in windows kinda defeats the purpose. Do less on more screen... no thank you, the very second there is a new fix to disable Metro I'm doing it. This is a Desktop PC not a Smart Phone. So please use metro on Tablets with Windows 8 but don't force it on Desktop Users... There are some good sides. I really really like the new Task Manager. And these new features inside the Windows Explorer are nice... but they only work with Metro? Why do features you don't even see in the normal Metro UI, but only if you go into Desktop Mode only work with Metro UI enabled?? I hope they work this out till the Release.
Hey let's see what the next Windows looks like sure the new logo is shit but I'm sure they've made plenty of improveme EEURRRRGH
"Reimagining" Whenever I read that word it makes me want to puke. Dear Microsoft, my PC isn't a goddamn phone! And it isn't a tablet either! Thanks for Win7 though.

They've actually added a lot more built-in support for multiple monitors for Windows 8. As for Metro, they've apparently done a lot of UX testing. On one hand, I'm afraid of the changes being a bit too much and reducing my productivity. On the other hand I want to trust that Microsoft actually made things easier/quicker based off the testing and that it's actually a lot better once you get over the initial "eww, it's different from what I'm used to" stage. Then again, Windows 8 is the biggest UX change they're making to Windows in almost 20 years. And the ribbon UI in Explorer looks like it can be really useful for shell extensions like 7zip, TortoiseSVN/Git/Hg, etc. that normally take up a lot of space in your right-click menu. And then it can all be nicely organized in the ribbon instead of listed one-by-one on the right-click menu. Oh, and we have native ISO mounting now and a few other goodies.

Wait... let me make some screenshots. I gonna edit this in a minute. EDIT (Left side of the image is my primary monitor, right side my secondary, It's pretty clear where they are seperated on the picture. So this is my Start Screen now: This is Metro UI, you're right, with a single click I can get on my desktop. Everything fine, but then I wanted to Open my Computer. But no Start Button (and no replacing function in the Consumer Preview!) and no Desktop Image of "My Computer" or the "User" Folder. So what to do? Lower Left Edge, Click there, Metro opens, select Windows Explorer App, and over the left side navigate to "My Computer" Here for example is something I like: When you hover over the right edge of the primary monitor (this was a bit tricky for me with the second monitor) this opens: You can use this to open the Control Panel or adjust some quick settings for example for the second monitor, I like this one But now the "apps"... This is the Chat App See how it takes the WHOLE Monitor? Well there is a second mode: Okay this is better, but it takes away the edge, it takes away space from my desktop, for me this is no advantage over a chat window. Next example is Solitaire: Launching Solitaire presents you with this. Again you can put it to the side of the desktop which gives you this interesting build.... Same problem again... takes away desktop space I can't use differently. Metro UI simply is not made for quick multitasking, and so, at least for me, it doesn't belong on a Desktop PC. Also I cannot put any Metro Stuff on my second monitor, it simply doesnt work. If I at least could put the Chat App on the Edge of my Second Monitor... but no. Someone asked about the difference between a programm and an app. The De Facto difference in Windows 8 is, that the App runs in this Metro Style (either full screen or takes the edge) and a program runs in a window (Classic style) On a tablet, Metro would be my absolutely first choice, but I don't like it on my desktop....

Windows 8: Your computer is now a tablet.
nope
Windows 8: Your computer is now a tablet.
Look at your computer. Now look at me. Now look back at your computer. Your computer is now a tablet
Windows 9 is gonna be so fucking good.
The new Windows ME? If I have the cash, might get a Tablet that runs this. Would be nice to have a Tablet computer that's actually, yanno, a computer.
I'm probably not going to get this as a main operating system, but I have an old netbook to test this out on so I'll do that before I form an opinion.
i have yet to find anything wrong with windows 7, so whatever. i stuck with XP until a year after 7 was out, i think i can live with 7 until the next big upgrade is out. i'd most likely still be using XP if just cause 2 didn't exist honestly lol
Posting from Windows 8, on a 4-year old netbook running a lovely onboard intel atom single-core 1.60GHz CPU, an onboard graphics chip and a 1GB RAM. While a lot faster than Windows 7, it doesn't support the 1024x600 resolution and I'm stuck at 800x600 - and I therefor can't run the built in apps. Explorer is an atroucity. Especially now that they've tied in the Ribbon UI. I have to say though, I like the simplicity of the theme overally.
Call me crazy, but I am 99.9% sure this hate on the UI is a bandwagon hate. If no one said they didn't hate it and they just kept it to themselves and actually tried and got used to it, more people would be open about them liking it. It is made for quick and easy access, tablet/phone UIs are quick and easy, so this makes working with your computer faster, which I like. Do you really think they would keep this if everyone disliked it? No, people like it contrary to popular belief.
Just call it Windows Tablet and be done with it. People with desktops don't want this bullshit.

Quite the opposite actually. And yeah, it probably is really easy to use on a tablet, but really slow and cumbersome on a desktop since most of the new stuff is tied to gestures that don't work very well with a mouse. The charms on the right for example, getting that menu open is a bitch sometimes. Especially since I have a second monitor, so my mouse just jumps to the second monitor if I overshoot the hotzone by a couple pixels.
I think I would quite like it if they removed all the metro parts to it, as it is it just seems like a really awkward middle ground between a tablet interface and a desktop not doing either properly.
