Steam paid mods still under consideration at Valve: "We screwed things up in the details"
If that's the case, protest that and not the paid mod system as a whole. I'm sure people were doing that and I missed it, but reading through online comments I just kept hearing "this is stupid" and not why.
I've seen too many communities become empty shells, twitching and quivering minor small mods because they decided to involve money and things go to shit.
Also, as I've said before, the money would only make sense toward things like small add ons like weapon packs. Large scale mods would end up spending more money covering for the money they'd make from these kinds of systems.
"i want a donation model instead!"
did you guys not see the nexus moderator AMA who talked with mod developers who HAD optional donation buttons but nobody donated. the amount of people who would donate to a skyrim mod is probably less than the amount of people who bought fuckin winrar
i support paid mods done well. if it allows mod developers to mod full time, imagine what creations of beauty could be concieved. think about some of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. mods, and imagine if they had a full production budget because they would be paid for their work
I still don't know what's wrong with paid mods. Don't buy stuff you don't want, and support those who do cool stuff. If you don't like it, move on with your life and keep doing what you were doing.
paid mods for something like Black Mesa or Alchemilla is okay but for some skins and crap no

Doesn't stop the damage done to the community

oh my god
are they seriously confused as to why no one donates?
it's practically hidden from sight, you have to know to look for it

The thing with donating is that unless you made an amazing, gamechanging mod, people wont really bother to give you money unless they have to.
valve did a completely shit job at implementing paid mods last time. there's nothing wrong with modders earning money for their work, it's that it bring in so many problems (quality control, people from redistributing paid mods, etc) that are difficult to fix, if impossible. essentially the beehive valve's poking isn't worth the honey.
If Valve think they only screwed up the details, the next time is bound to be a trainwreck as well. Valve needs to change major stuff.

The one thing that was wrong was the amount of shit content put for sale just to get money.
As long as there's some sort of judge system or a way to verify content somebody publishes and modders get a good cut, it should work out alright.

better just to not do it ever again

yo how is that hidden, its literally one of the big title buttons at the top of the screen.
yo how is that hidden, its literally one of the big title buttons at the top of the screen.
its actually not that big at all. It's hidden because it blends in with the other buttons. It should be a nice "DONATE" button, not a generic tab. No ones going to really notice it that easily if at all. There are also tabs on the bottom to find the files, which are way more noticeable.
I'd support a "pay what you want" system where there was an option to pay nothing. The way the community is, the consumers should be the ones deciding if a mod is worth money or not, not the authors.
Off to the right near a bunch of very similar buttons that barely anyone really uses (who really votes or endorses mods on the Nexus?)
a shitton of people. tons of mods will have endorsements and files of the month (whihc u have to vote for) are a thing

Do you give up on going to the store because the abundance of low quality items or do you do a little research and buy the things that are interesting and well-crafted?
Just make a fucking donation option ffs. Make all mods free, but you can donate if you feel like they did a good job.

See, when you say "make a donation option", what you mean is "make a button that I won't use". Be honest, because statistically this is true.
Why did you start charging?
We need funding to develop the software, and only 0.002% of people were donating.
Sure, get upset with Steam's cutting up of funds and failure to provide quality control, but no should pretend that donations matter, because chances are they won't. Ever.

Even with the blue circle around it it still took me a minute to see the donate button :v:
I was looking for something that was set apart from the rest of the page, not hidden by the tags.

Synergy was a very shit mod that got, in time, so horribly optimized it wasn't even funny. I'm surprised anyone would even buy it to begin with, let alone donate, so don't act surprised. I'm sure they've fixed it up by now by I remember it being an actually physically painful experience.
HOW ABOUT Valve and Todd Howard and all the rest of them assholes pay the MOD developers, so they can keep creating FREE mods for us?
HUH?? How about that?

Ha no, if I got paid by the developers of games Im making mods for, I would probably pump out shitty skins and maps like it was going out of style.

This is available to mod authors, as soon as you hit the download link it pops up.
Some mod authors just choose not to use it.

The consumers decide if a mod is worth money by buying the mod or not using it, just as with any other fucking thing made by anyone else in the world. What makes you think mods are such a special snowflake that the person who spent time and effort creating it doesn't get to decide if they want money for it or not.

A thousand times this. Whenever a discussion about paid mods comes up, a lot of people begin with "I'm fine with the creator getting paid for their work, but...". No. Stop right there. Nothing good comes after that. You either think they deserve to be paid or they don't.
Why don't all stores just run on donations then?

This is not a Source mod. This is a utility that allows you to network your keyboard and mouse over multiple machines regardless of operating system. It was an incredibly useful tool provided that machines were hooked up over a LAN interface, but despite that I probably would have never donated for it, and statistically speaking far less than 1% ever donated for the project.
People should be upset that Valve won't take initiative with quality control, but pretending that donations are a drag-and-drop replacement for purchases is just a cop-out. Saying "donations only" is synonymous with saying "no price tag". It's why people like Trent Reznor tell people that pay-what-you-want services don't work for people who are too far underground, because work will be devalued down to bare minimum while money isn't made.
I, too, have released work for free with an option of buying the work if you enjoy it. I have made it onto the front page of piracy sites before with over 1,000 downloads in a few months. I'd say that since 2008, I've made less than $50 on work, so no, donations don't help nor are they incentive unless people try the Patreon route with consistent content, but even then that's not sustainable unless you're a notable person.

Nice strawman there. I'm sure it contributes loads towards the discussion.
