A lot of people here are going to be pissed that World of Warcraft is on the top of this list but...it's really, really hard to do better than WoW.
"Do better" and "do more" aren't necessarily the same things.
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,5,6,7,8,9,10 That looks about right.
EvE is #7 just above Runescape and TOR makes the list. Meh
runescape is a legitimately good mmo it has a terrible community, but the game itself is really good and polished
Runescape will always be #1 in my heart.
Goddamnit runescape, why do you always make me subscribe for 1 month every year and then get bored
why is Tera not on there? my girlfriend wants me to play it with her am I going to be getting into a horrible MMO?
lmao the old republic is on that list even Tera is better
Did you even play it for 5 minutes?
why is Tera not on there? my girlfriend wants me to play it with her am I going to be getting into a horrible MMO?
It ain't too amazing, but you probably won't hate it. And even awful games become fun when you're playing with friends/gfs anyways.
i played ToR for a few hours
...
the gameplay is literally just WoW's as well, theres barely any difference.
WoW's gameplay is literally just everquest's with barely any difference. and it's like a carbon copy of everquest II which came out at the exact same time as WoW, just with cartoony graphics and 10x faster level gain still hilarious when people compare all MMOs to WoW imo speaking of which EQ/EQII isn't even on the list; bad list
...
nice arguement are you gonna tell me i have to get to max level to judge it? lmao no a few hours is more than enough to judge a game
nice arguement are you gonna tell me i have to get to max level to judge it? lmao no a few hours is more than enough to judge a game
Not an MMO. Hell if that was the case, I'd say Guild Wars 2 is the greatest MMO I've played. But the midgame and endgame is where it falls from the best MMO I've played to a good MMO. If I based my view on it on the first few hours, I'd be lying to myself. MMOs can't be judged the same way as other games. MMOs aren't 6 hour experiences like a lot of the games that come out today and can't be judged like they are. You can't base your views on one genre the same way you can on another. It doesn't work like that. So if you're going to say you've only played it for a few hours then you're pretty much invalidating your own opinion on it because you've only played a very VERY minor fraction of the game that's designed to build the experience up over the course of potentially 100+ hours.
sorry, but a numbered list with WoW and some other major players at the top is a bad choice for playing it as randomly ordered. If it's not in order though I don't feel as mad about the fact it seemed like it was starting at #1 and going downhill, which is bad form in its own right like, I don't want to tell you how to write because hell if I can structure anything outside of a good rant, but these feel like some major faux-pas. also from past experience, signing up on sites to directly defend your article or artwork or other works tends to invite a lot of unnecessary harassment thanks to mob mentalities but thanks for hopping on to discuss
they probably just wrote down the first mmos that came to mind as "MASSIVE" wow is literally the the first one to come to peoples minds so it makes sense it's #1
Hell yeah, Guild Wars 2
nice arguement are you gonna tell me i have to get to max level to judge it? lmao no a few hours is more than enough to judge a game
To be fair you shouldn't be expressing any sort of large opinion over an MMO you've only played for a few hours. I've got like a month or so in total sunk into the game and it's really not awful, i mean it's not -great- but you can totally have fun with it especially when you get to higher level content much like a majority of mmos, it gets better as you go on. this is why "a few hours" is a dumb timeframe for a good image of it
I really tried to get in to GW2, I seriously did. Probably spent more than 60 hours (because friends played it mostly) but I just found it boring as shit
No idea why Tera isn't there, it deserves a #2 spot easily for the combat alone. And Age of Conan should be up there too - absolutely incredible graphics for an MMO at the time (and still some of the best flowing water I've seen)

They say "true action combat" but really it's not true action when every other skill locks you in place.
At least we can thank the laws of good taste that Ragnarok Online 2 ISN'T on that list and will hopefully be on a bottom 10 list. And while 10 best lists mean nothing, its nice to see Secret World and Rift get a bit of recognition.
just quit a 30 minute GW2 session because combat (and you do a lot of it) is hilariously grindy even when I'm a level ahead I don't know how I got a character to 80 already.
nice arguement are you gonna tell me i have to get to max level to judge it? lmao no a few hours is more than enough to judge a game
i am sure you've developed an expert observation of the game after playing for a whopping few hours [sp]lmao[/sp]
Star Wars The Old Republic over Star Trek Online? Who made that decision?
Crazy that no one really is talking about the secret world, quest line is awesome if you are looking to try out a new mmo.

WoW is so boring to level up in comparison to GW2, though there really isn't much left to do in GW2 other than the updates, which are a real bore in my opinion.
ToR is a pretty solid game IMO, I've never had as much fun leveling in an MMO as that game and its great fun with friends too. It fell short however in a lot of respects because it lacked a lot of features that WoW had like UI mods and a dungeon finder and a solid endgame. EvE is great fun for some but for the most part its a cult game.
I love it whenever someone makes a list a bunch of people go apeshit because their favorite game isn't on it.
No Star Trek Online? By far my favorite MMO, just because the space missions make you feel like an actual captain. Having to readjust the balance of your shields, power levels, sending boarding parties and activating abilities. That and season 8 just got released with an assload of new content, all free by the way, no level cap, there's a premium currency, but you can earn it in game.
excuse me where is clubpenguin on this list??
Guild Wars 2 is literally the sexiest looking MMO (graphically) I've ever seen, but I just couldn't continue once I reached level 50. I would probably be playing FF:ARR if it was free-movement combat. And I had a lot of fun with TOR surprisingly. It was the closest thing I was gonna get to Galaxies, so I went in with a positive attitude and got a good deal of fun out of it before stopping.
what about the story? its fucking abhorrent
You've still never mentioned why. Its hard to counter that when you don't give a reason. My story was pretty solid. Not perfect, but enough to keep me interested, and better than any other MMO story. Besides, there's 8 main story archs in the game, God forbid one's not entirely up to snuff.
not to mention the still persisting bugs where people change voices midway through a conversation
Never had that happen. I played the game to max level, did every flashpoint and operation, and completed all the expansion content. At the very least, if it did happen, I never noticed that.
happened when i was playing a smuggler when i spoke to a few minor quest npcs
Oh no a game with an astronomical amount of recorded dialogue messed up on an inconsequential NPC. Fucking worst MMO ever made.
whereas the gameplay itself is just like WoW. i played a lot of WoW so when I quit i wanted something different and TOR doesnt deliver in that aspect at all
Welcome to the magical world of subjectivity. The game play in my opinion, while not groundbreaking, wasn't bad. Yes I can see why other may not like it, but I can see why others do. That doesn't objectively make the game worse.
