Steam box delayed.

By that logic Alienware, Razer, and other PC firms are not allowed to use Windows.
It's a PC, NOT a console.
This console will more then likely run on a Linux OS... Could be one step closer for us Linux fanatics. C:
If anything it will run windows, Nobody is going to be porting games to linux. This will be a windows based (Maybe some kind of lite windows build) PC. This looks like it will be made by any manufacturer, think DELL steam box, or Alienware steam box. What will define it as a Steam box will be its build, in this case the 8gb of ram, an i7 and so on, this way game developers have some kind of optimal build to go around if this takes off. The performace boost in games would be enormous, right now games are being optimised to run on very wide variety of builds, if it was narrowed down and knew that, lets say 30% of steam users ran steam on a steam box, the performance gains would be great.
I'm probably repeating my self and make no sense but someone will get it.

Well if you're really a programmer you'd know why that's stupid.

Any game that can be ran on PS3 can easily be ported for a Linux OS, same with Mac games.

Console games run on a different CPU architecture than PC games, and not all software for Unix-based OSes are easily portable.

Still, why would they be using anything other than a Unix based OS on a x86 CPU? They will not be using Windows.

Because if they want any significant portion of their library available on the "Steam Box" they'll use an X86 compatible, Windows based operating system. Which, I dunno, Windows fits into the category.

It's a PC not console jesus.
Really? How much will it be? Don't you think Valve have thought about this stuff? Do you think they just said LETS MAKE ANOTHER CONSOLE? Or do you think they had a good think about it before doing anything?
i feel like they're doing just what the article said (if the rumors are true). basically trying to make a popular enough pc that it can be used as a baseline spec to target games for.
either way garry if they arent selling it at a loss it will still be more expensive than building the equivalent yourself. and like I said it doesnt appear to be another console and if it was one it could be sold a loss (initially). i think this could be valve just trying to get people who have money and are too scared / lazy to build their own into pc gaming
And then steam emits from it's pipes.
It's like 1837 all over again.

PCs aren't that expensive. I know you're gonna act like to succeed it needs to be a bitchin ass $6000 PC with the latest everything - but that's not the case with PC games at all.
Hell, you can still run recent games with a 8800GT now.Thats some bang for buck.
