Fallout 4 DLC info is "not far off" and survival mode is getting a "complete overhaul"
Location is a good reason, defensability is another. For example, Egrets Tours Marina or w/e has one side that's completely unattackable due to it being an ocean, while two others are the only ones ever attacked. Throw up a surrounding wall and some turrets and that thing is defensible as hell.
once you get far enough into the game you can spam so many turrets and kill things so quickly that defense becomes trivial. location and defensability doesn't make any sense because you get settlements shoved onto you anyway, instead of choosing a location to place a single settlement. it's not like you can choose which settlements get attacked.
even if you get super into base building, most people will mostly focus on one or two instead of all 30. 30 settlements! why are there 30 settlements when they all start looking the same without mods?
How can we ignore the shit tier level of construction they use for the game's settlement system?

I think the biggest problem of the settlements isn't how held back it is, but the fact that it's literally just a stacked on feature. Were it a mod or something, a lot could be forgiven, but in Fallout 4 having a big settlement that runs smoothly and all doesn't touch on anything else. There's no plot behind it, you won't really gain any quests or pretty much anything from it, apart from the feeling that "I built this". The only benefits you get from it are really gimmicky, too. You'll gain caps and shit just like from anything else, it's just another, kind of boring, way of doing it.
That and it's really just not all that fun. It's not in-depth enough to keep you interested, but it's complex enough to feel like a chore setting up the NPCs with jobs and managing the very basic needs.
I won't lie, I'm actually thinking of buying the season pass. If there's one thing I trust Bethesda on, it's DLC.
The dialogue system needs a "complete overhaul."

from what i've read, it seems like oblivion all over again
basically, horse armor dlc and one expansion so far
I just use the settlement system to build a nice player home which is what I like it for. Everyone else just works at getting me crafting mats or otherwise they'll sit in the rain next to Garvey and complain about no food etc while I walk into my mansion.

Everyone lives in my mansion. It has traders and shit on the top and I'm close to reaching the max settlement size or w/e
