I thought FF7 had a shit ass pc port.
It was OK, for a PC port you could do a lot worse. The lack of higher-res FMV's and the MIDI music was a downer but not a deal-breaker, and the game worked fine in general as far as I can remember. There are both mods and patches for the game nowadays (including a PS music mod). Anyhow, I think FF (and JRPG's in general) are a bit too different to fit on the same list as many of these titles, so I'm glad they weren't included.
Pretty decent list.
I think they left Fallout 1 and 2 out because Fo1 at least is unaccessible for 2013 gamers. It relies heavily on RNGs and you need a decent build right out of the bat if you don't want to get murdered five steps off the rat cave
All 'old school' rpgs are hard to pick up. [editline]25th September 2013[/editline]
Shadowrun should not be as low as that, neither Mass Effect. Why New Vegas is above them all, i have no bloody clue.
Uh, are you sure you played New Vegas?
There's also the incompatibilities they have with some aspects of modern PCs. Like Fallout 2 hates 32-bit colour and will fill your screen with rainbow unless you know to set your computer to render in 16-bit colour. I've seen a lot of people who don't know about the 16/32-bit difference turning away form the game completely because of that.
I found out about a fix for it a while back, but don't remember it. But that is interest about 16 bit color. I'll have to try it out when I reinstall FO1.
Everyone had daddy issues in ME2.
Except Thane, who was a daddy issue, and Garrus, who was betrayed/abandoned.
where the fuck is Barkley: Shut Up and Jam Gaiden?
I agree it's one of the best free RPGs out there, if not THE best. this isn't a joke, by the way, it's actually a really good game
System Shock 2 is probably one of the best RPG's I've played, I really dont know why its so unknown
I thought the writing in general was far superior in two, though you are right that I've never forgiven them for getting rid of the mako. Goddamn Bioware.
I played the 360 version a few years in, I can understand why the replaced the mako - it was impossible to control on the console and I suddenly udnerstood why people were screaming about it. Though Me2 was really bad in one huge department - the story itself was inconsequential really. The only thing it did was add a few characters. If it wasn't part of the trilogy, there would be very little one would be actually missing in terms of larger plot development.
System Shock 2 is probably one of the best RPG's I've played, I really dont know why its so unknown
Not really unknown as far as I've heard, it's just so damn old that most people never had the chance to play it. 1999 was 14 years ago. Though I suspect it also got overshadowed a bit by Deus Ex.
TL2 but no D2. I feel like the person who made this wants to keep mainstream games off the list.
I played the 360 version a few years in, I can understand why the replaced the mako - it was impossible to control on the console and I suddenly udnerstood why people were screaming about it.
BioWare are just lazy fucks. Instead of improving the controls (or even patching them in the original) they just remove it and replace it with something really fucking boring and shitty. At least you were doing shit even if the handling was a bit wonky.
TL2 but no D2. I feel like the person who made this wants to keep mainstream games off the list.
IMO, Torchlight 2 seems like it was just the "Not Diablo 3" game.
No love for Dink Smallwood?
Deus Ex and Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines are on the list? Wow, I'm impressed. Those are the two that instantly come to mind for me when someone says "Best RPGs Ever." Deus Ex is definitely #1 on my "Favorite Games of All-Time" list.
I played the 360 version a few years in, I can understand why the replaced the mako - it was impossible to control on the console and I suddenly udnerstood why people were screaming about it.
The Mako was fine to control with a controller. Most of the complaints I've seen were from PC players, which I understand.
The Mako had fine PC controls.
Diablo II may not be on the list but it's still one of my personal favorites at least.
I feel like the only one who doesn't consider Diablo/Torchlight rpgs.
nice list but I have to disagree with the NV DLC bit Old World Blues is the best and there's no denying that but Lonesome Road was pretty fucking badass
I think they left Fallout 1 and 2 out because Fo1 at least is unaccessible for 2013 gamers. It relies heavily on RNGs and you need a decent build right out of the bat if you don't want to get murdered five steps off the rat cave
nah its not because of that, if you want to talk about builds its more important in any dnd based game. fallout has its own system fallout 1 and 2 are like that because of bugs and the fact that the system in the game is super-flawed. its part of its charm, but it means really strange things can happen in combat. one time i critically misfired in fallout 2 and killed myself. another time i critically missed and did negative damage.
nice list but I have to disagree with the NV DLC bit Old World Blues is the best and there's no denying that but Lonesome Road was pretty fucking badass
Truthfully, I didn't really enjoy any of the NV DLCs apart from OWB. Dead Money was especially egregious. I did not enjoy a single moment of Dead Money. To be fair, I played most of the DLC when I was in the middle of a pacifist run. Most of the missions in the main game can be played without killing anybody through various means. The DLC isn't designed around that.

There are reasons why for the sake of narrative, but they really aren't designed for non-combat routes at all.
is anachronox actually any fun to play? I'm in the mood for something cheap and wacky
I feel like the only one who doesn't consider Diablo/Torchlight rpgs.
Probably because they are ARPGs, a documented and well known type of RPG.
The Mako was fine to control with a controller. Most of the complaints I've seen were from PC players, which I understand.
Honestly, the problems with the Mako werent with the Mako itself (except for those useless jump jets), but more with the terrain. The terrain on some planets (especially the grass planets) were utter hell to get over due to the stupidly steep cliffs everywhere that you could not get past, and just the fact it was too cliffy to begin with.
a severe lack of Ultima, but overall an agreeable list

While my love of RPGs stems from Ultima - which is absent from this list because playing it now is a huge chore -
*shrug*
I couldn't even really get past the first hour in Mass Effect. People all act like it is one of the best games ever, but I found it to be slow and I just couldn't continue.

And that was on Xbox. [editline]27th September 2013[/editline] I liked the first one, bought the second one and got through probably 3/4 but my saved game disappeared. :\
