is anachronox actually any fun to play? I'm in the mood for something cheap and wacky
As long as you can stomach JRPG mechanics (annoying combat and a lack of RP in the RPG) and the first few hours dragging, yes. It's written pretty well and has some great characters.
Though Me2 was really bad in one huge department - the story itself was inconsequential really. The only thing it did was add a few characters. If it wasn't part of the trilogy, there would be very little one would be actually missing in terms of larger plot development.
The only important plot points happen in the dlcs, yeah. In retrospect, ME2's story should have been something like: 'get the crucible plans from the collectors.' Oops.
I like this list, hard to find fault with that top 5. I could've settled for either KOTOR game, though he made a good case for TSL. Makes me wonder. That same gray-area moral ambiguity that I can't stand in Dragon Age seems to work so well in TSL. Fuck it.
mass effect 1 is the best game of the trilogy. I spent ages exploring all the planets it was so awesome. In comparison the me1, the other two feel like they play on rails
Probably because they are ARPGs, a documented and well known type of RPG.
It feels more like a Hack n Slash andventure game with some rpg elements. Just because you have character classes and some stats doesn't really make it an rpg.

Mass Effect 1 felt way too short imo.
I'm almost done with Lonesome Road and I'm loving it so far. Old World Blues, while annoying in difficulty, was hilarious and I loved it.
Dead Money sucked though. Honest hearts was kinda... meh? I dunno, Honest hearts pisses me off in the same way that Point Lookout pissed me off. You're a goddamn tribalman, you should not be able to one-hit me in ranger combat armor with a fucking baseball bat. Furthermore, you're fucking half naked, you also shouldn't be able to take hand-loaded 45-70 to the face and still have time to one-hit me.
dead money was great
dead money was great
You can definitely find fault in the gameplay, since they tried some interesting stuff and... well, your mileage may vary; but it more than makes up for it with its writing.
I have a small problem with few of their DLC recommendations. They say you should buy just Old World Blues for NV. Definitely wait for a sale and get the GOTY version with all of them. OWB has the most content but all the DLCs tell one story which is really good if you play them in order. As for Mass Effect's DLC they recommend Shadow Broker for ME2 but I'd say go with the Citadel for ME3 if you can pick only one. It's one piece of content that makes ME3 slightly bearable.
dead money was great
I'm going to have to disagree. I've played through that DLC with many different builds and I don't quite remember ever enjoying it.
If Bethesda didn't use such a shit engine, i could of put more hours into NV and FO3.
The Mako was fine to control with a controller. Most of the complaints I've seen were from PC players, which I understand.
Nope, all complaints I've ever seen were about the console version, which after trying it out felt vindicated.
The PC version on the other hand controlled just fine and you had most PC players doing lots of insane terrain juggling because it was easy to control and shoot stuff at the same time.
bitch wheres my KotOR 1
Replaced by the much better kotor 2
That's quite a bit better handling than on a console, that's for damn sure. :v:
I love that thruster cheat.
No dungeons of dredmor </3
No dungeons of dredmor </3
Dungeons of Dredmor is great but I wouldn't really put it on the list of the greatest RPGs
Nethack should be on the list though
Why is Morrowind there but not Oblivion?
Oblivion is pretty much the best looking, most non-linear, discovery based RPG ever made.

Morrowind is much more open ended than Oblivion. Plus I don't think they wanted to put multiple games from the same series in there.
anarchronox is fucking amazing, get it like now if you havent, you'll REALLY enjoy it

oblivion is absolute shit compared to other games in the series
visuals are super dull, so is the story
the dark brotherhood questline and the last quest of thieves guild are really entertaining but the rest is pretty damn generic and crap
and dont even mention the worst levelling in the history of rpgs
I guess I never really considered Warband to be a rpg, I always saw it as a medieval mercenary simulator with rpg elements. That being said there are 2 types of people in the world, those who think mount and blade is one of the best games ever made and those who havent played it.
To sum it up, mount and blade is basically what would happen if you took a space game like Freelancer and stuck it in a planet with medieval technology and society.
There's complete freedom and you can do shit like play the game as a trade sim if you wanted to. You could lead a mercenary company for various factions, swapping around as you build your name up and form various shops up. You can live the American dream in that game and everything you do can be completely determined by the amount of work you decide to put into the game and it's completely unforgiving if you let it. You can lose everything from a single bad decision and I love it for that.

Old World Blues is the best and there's no denying that but Lonesome Road was pretty fucking badass
Honest Hearts was an excellent experience and I loved the story and location. Only thing was the obvious problem with the supertribesman.

The one thing that people don't really understand but they love about Oblivion is the fact that the soundtrack is perhaps the best out of it. Aside from soundtrack and just immersion because of the way the world was built, it's kinda meh.
mass effect 1 is the best game of the trilogy. I spent ages exploring all the planets it was so awesome. In comparison the me1, the other two feel like they play on rails
I really enjoyed the first mass effect, but I did find the combat was much better in the second game. They built on the crew interactions and character development, which was nice, but I did still prefer the first game's sense of discovery, especially whenever the Mako was involved. I had no idea why so many people wanted it gone; the mako just needed some work. Less cliffs and more interesting planets would have pretty much sealed the deal.
Also on the topic of Mount & Blade Warband: easily one of the best and most unique games I have ever played. It really was one of my dream games.

Past Morrowind the Elder Scrolls games have always looked cool and had immersion, but the RPG side (especially Skyrim) just fell short and the game is boring to replay. It has no depth.
[editline]29th September 2013[/editline]
Also, while the lore is really interesting and neat, the actual writing and characters within the games are bad. The lore is probably because of Morrowind and prior, though.
I always found Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magik Obscura to pretty overrated.
Whoa, I never knew Troika made an RPG before Bloodlines!
I'll have to try it.

oh yeah that's not even an argument the gameplay VASTLY improved between 1 and 2. but everything else was a downgrade

Ultima really was a chore, apparently even for people who played it back in the 80s.
I got a free copy of Ultima IV with my GOG.com account and it was impossible for me to play. You need a huge manual to even start, and that's where all the dialogue is stored as well due to memory limitations of the time.
ftfy
may be true, but i thought skyrim was really beautiful
a bit generic, but very well executed
and the story wasnt even half as garbage as it was in oblivion, mainly because of how skyrim has much more politics involved, oblivion is pure high fantasy

Also, dragons are way less annoying to deal with than oblivion gates, and take less time to deal with, too.

The problem is that the civil war was a section of the main quest. If Alduin wasn't in Skyrim and it was purely focused on the civil war then it would have been a lot better.
[editline]30th September 2013[/editline]
I will admit that Skyrim's environments were good, but that doesn't help when most areas and dungeons in the game are complete shit. Oblivion's dungeons were shit too but at least Oblivion had fun and numerous quests.
