Hey guys - let's do a little math. Let's say that every person on Earth who has internet has downloaded ONE AND ONLY ONE song illegally(That's obviously not the case, the number is probably 100 times that, but let's go with it). Using the sum per song the guy in the article has to pay, multiplied by the number of people on Earth who have internet access, we get 21,774 * 2,267,233,742 = 49,366,747,498,308 USD.
I guess humanity has some outstanding fees.
You people are missing the point, he's not getting that big a fine for simply downloading 31 songs, but also for distributing them which would cause a lot of damages in lost sales in the eyes of the people who sell the stuff.
Now sure I think this is dumb as well but you people were missing the point of the case so I had to correct you guys.
[editline]lol[/editline]
First of all it's not stated where he downloaded the songs from so to jump to conclusions about torrenting is a very loose argument.
Secondly, I never said that the amount they were asking for was reasonable, in fact I said I thought it was dumb... however you people were still wrong as to say that it was simply for downloading the 31 songs.
I mean seriously, what's wrong with you people? Can't you read?
He used limewire or kazaa.
that logic is fucking stupid. You don't fine someone the same price as what they stole because then it turns into "well, I can get this for free and maybe have to pay a dollar, or i can pay a dollar"
charging someone a 20000% markup on illegal downloading is stupid (and if anyone had read the article at all, you would know it's not that high), but you still need to give people a disincentive for this shit
Normally you would go to prison for theft, though.
I have 60 music files downloaded ILLEGALLY
shit shit shit
yeah, and that's the disincentive
yeah, and that's the disincentive
Which is fairer IMHO than having to pay $675,000 in virtual damages.
Piracy isn't lost sales. Anything I pirate I wouldn't have bought anyway.
Good example: I pay for going to the cinema. That's an experience worth paying for.

It's not a lost sale, it's copyright infringement.
It's not like the actual musician will get any of the money - and it's completely insane that he's going to pay more than many rape victims get in compansation.
It's not a lost sale, it's copyright infringement.
My point was they wouldn't have made any money if pirates didn't pirate anyway. They need to start offering better ways to get content; and make content worth getting to stamp out piracy.
Suing people for exorbitant amounts of money is just dumb attention-whoring/scaremongering.
If the RIAA got penalties like this for every song that everyone has illegally copied ever, they would crash the economy by being "owed" more wealth than exists in the entire solar system.
Copyright damages are horseshit and a prime example of corrupt politicians allowing businesses to write their own legal rules.
RIAA is retarded as fuck, I'd love to buy every single music I enjoy, hell, I have a HUGE CD/Vynil collection in my house, but I just can't find MOST FUCKING CDs.

Yea right? Fuck the system! Let's give no fucks about these artists that are pleasing us with their work, or the record labels that make sure that we have the music we want.
[editline]25th August 2012[/editline]
They're all corrupt.
Wow fining a 16 years old money that they know he can't pay.
They pretty much forced him to go to trial only to get his fine increased.
[editline]26th August 2012[/editline]
Anyway this still won't save the RIAA from going bankrupt.
Anyone with the last name "baum" is going to get their shit slapped. :v:
On topic: He kind of had it coming, it was only a matter of time.
Wait, people are actually going after shit like this?
Wow. He could have downloaded a million songs, it would still be ridiculous considering the fuckton of money the "victim" earns in a year.

Thing is, some stuff is expensive as fuck for the price it has, or just increadibly hard to find like you said.
31 songs, thats like, 3 CDs?
That might not even get to $50, except this guy has to pay $675,000 to someone who makes that minutes after releasing their next biggest hit.
It's almost like a poor hobo stealing a loaf of bread, getting caught and being expected to pay for the whole bakery or going to jail for a crapload of years.

Expect that when you actually stop, read and think, you notice that most of that money will be going to pay the lawyers, since this is an ongoing thing for years.
I don't think you guys understand, he downloaded illegally and hosted them on his website for other people to download. Much worse of a crime than simply downloading.

I know people who've hosted games in a hidden directory on websites :v:

okay
That's an insane amount to pay for copyright infringement. It would be a lot to recover from.
oh noes i sent some 0s and 1s on the internets oh god we're gonna be poor
Come on guys, don't make a guy pay for copyright infringement when you don't own a certain pattern of 0s and 1s.
(Especially for that much money. God damn.)

Solution: stop sueing for complete greedy bullshit.
Solution: stop sueing for complete greedy bullshit.
No, this is not communism mate, they're entitled to sue people for not respecting their rights over content they worked on, it's not public.
