I prefer the male shep but that's just my own preference. Don't see why people should rage at other people's choice of who to play as.
Played both multiple times in both Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2.
Are you kidding, femshep voice actor was 100x better than maleshep voice actor
[editline]20th July 2011[/editline]
i seriously don't get this
its fantastic, especially better than the guy voice actor
are your ears broken???
because she's horrible. she forces a deep voice which sounds extraordinarily unnatural (as seen in the video above) and her voice has no timbre whatsoever and is flat and monotone. this time you're seriously just flat out wrong, rusty
Femshep is batter than maleshep in ME1, not so much in ME2.
I finished ME2 about 8 times, 2 as Male..
Female was so much easier to make look good.. Male was either default Sheperd of his derp ass ugly cousin.. Also despite first reply I preffered female voice, though yes it wasn't great
Both sides of this argument are wrong in that both of them are pretty boring speakers.
Barely a quarter of either of their lines are delivered with anything resembling depth. I find I care much more about the supporting cast than I do about Shep, as far as I'm concerned, he's just an avatar I can move around and shoot people with.
That being said, FemShep's lines fit a Renegade playthrough much better than Meer. Similarly, Meer performs the Paragon lines much better than Hale I've found.
Regardless of that though, it still doesn't change the fact that both of them are equally bland and uninspired in this instance. Hale's plenty experienced but I wonder if she actually enjoys this job Bioware's given her, as for Meer, well at best he sounds heroic in a somewhat goofy way. I'm hoping to see some improvements in ME3 but from the current footage I'm willing to bet much more that I'm going to enjoy anyone else's lines far more than I ever will Shepard's, male OR female.
"The other big factor is: whose bum do I want to stare at for 30 hours?"
What a fucking idiot ITS A CHARACTER MODEL
I've beaten Mass Effect 1 (and attempting to beat ME2) four times, twice as male, twice as female.
I just hope for less monotone.
I prefer to play as a male in any game because I'm male.
Yeah I like being immersed in games and when your character is an unrealistic polar opposite of you, it's damn near impossible to be immersed in the game.
I just alternate what gender I play as to add a bit of variety.
Well I try to envision myself as the character in the game for immersion so I play male because I am a male.
That's because the female voice actor had no idea how to not speak in a bland monotone and uninterested voice
are you fucking joking
Jennifer Hale is way better than the awful male Shep voice actor
I played the female Shepard not for the ass, plot line, or voice acting - I played as a female because I'm bored sick of playing gruff space marines.
Femshep was so Gruff she was taking bites out of crime.

Hale's a great VA, don't get me wrong, but all of her lines in the ME games just feel really forced.
Sure, Meer is really bland, but it's kinda what you'd expect from a soldier like Shepard. It's believable.
As if the male Shepard was that much better. His voice annoyed the hell out of me lol. Although ive never chosen the female so i have no clue what the hell she sounds like. Come to think of it, i never chose female in any Bioware game.
I chose femshep initially so that I didn't have to stare at manshep's arse the entire game, but i've grown really attached to the character. And it's incredibly fun in those moments where a character is really sexist towards shepherd, and you get to totally own him.
I prefer Jennifer Hale's voice too. I'm not saying Sheploo's voice actor is bad, just I prefer Hale.
Besides, i always like to pick as far from default as I can in RPGs, and since Manshep was everywhere in the promos and everything, that makes the farthest-from-default-option femshep.
That is a terrible reason honestly.
I don't care really since I have 2 characters that I playthrough. One Male and one female. Man.... now i wanna play Mass Effect.

why the fuck are you staring at your character's ass when there's more important stuff going on onscreen
oh incoming husks better look at my own ass
femshepard kicks ass
star trek: voyager was an awesome show and i get to be fucking captain janeway!
if ME2 had lesbo romances, that number would be higher
Hale's lines don't have the impact that Meer's do.

Meer's voice is a lot louder, more angry, and forceful. Hale seems to just be whispering weak threats to the guy. Shepard also seems a lot more believable. You'd expect a soldier to talk like that, not in hushed, somewhat aggressive tones. They are both still pretty bland performances, however Shepard's performance is more believable because he's a soldier, and years of training and discipline would leave him to speak pretty blandly.
In the end though, I don't know why people are making such a big deal about this. It seems that everything in Mass Effect that has a choice, people are going to argue over which choice is the best. Bioware's pointless romance sidequests don't aid this either, and it just feeds into the hordes of fans who call X romantic interest their "WAIFU!!~". Honestly, the fanbase for Bioware's games is pretty bad, so that would explain the vast majority of these arguments.

Jennifer Hale is way better than the awful male Shep voice actor
neither are particularly good tbh
I just do my character's voice by myself as I play. My first Shepard talked like Steve Irwin.
I really only play MaleShep because I like playing as the default Shepard.
Female Shepard is clearly superior in the localized versions of the game though
Not really, she either puts inflection and emphasis horribly on words or on the wrong words. She's like fucking G-man when I had a playthrough as her.
"Wait wait...are you fucking speaking riddles?!"

They're both bad. She was better in KOTOR
I prefer malesheps renegade lines, and I play renegade most of the time so I go with maleshep. His lines get a lot better when you imagine him as an asshole instead of a hardass. Interpret things in a humorous douchey way and the lines are brilliant. It presents Shepard in a "I don't really give a fuck," type of way.
Hale tries way too hard to be serious and it just comes off as bland to me.
I do find her voice to be audio Erotica during the Jacob Romance scene, aside from that
Isn't it the same with all games? since the vast majority are male
Renegade maleshep sounds like he's ready to wreck your shit.
Renegade femshep just sounds like every woman in the world
