don't you think you're being a bit dramatic?
Team Fortress 2 Classic (No economics/hats) for free. Do it
If this actually happens I'm quitting TF2.
Aren't you a little late for that?

Hell, I'd pay just to be able to play that game again...
What game was it that started the microtransaction model? Wasn't it Guild Wars?
Team Fortress 2 Classic (No economics/hats) for free. Do it
Then I'll be playing the free version instead of the paid one.
I could see something like what they did with Global Agenda working for Team Fortress 2. Anyone could play and access a majority of the game, prior owners and people who pay a 1 time fee get premium features. Then again, we could end up seeing "selling TF2 Hats/weapons/engineer metal!!! *spamsitehere* rush!!!" like we thought would happen when the Mann Co Store was put in.
Not a bad decision, but I think there should be at least a little price hoop to prevent VAC banned users from constantly re-entering the game.
All I want is old TF2 back, without the hats and the weapons and the maps. Exactly where it was when the game was first released.
I will literally shit golden charms of glee and happiness if we get a vanilla TF2 without hats and weapons.
The game which i bought is going for free .... :/
I think Valve should give us old players a couple bucks to use in the Mann Co. Store.
Guys, guys!
It's a rumour.
[editline]20th June 2011[/editline]
Besides, it was released over three years ago.
I think that people who bought the game will recieve an exclusive hat when it goes F2P.
I don't even like the game
How easy is it to sell hats for real money? I need some dosh.
And suddenly, an invasion of underaged noobs.
Free To Play TF2:

Limited TF2.exe

No Drops

No Trading

Default Weapons, but can buy from the Store
Fuck That Shit. they better not make it free to play.
I hope the F2P is like a cut down version of the game.
All the stock weapons. No new hats or weps. Simple as that.
I hope the F2P is like a cut down version of the game.

that would be great.

They wouldn't make any money that way, it's free to play because of the store.
They wouldn't make any money that way, it's free to play because of the store.
Uh... They haven't released a F2P.

Enjoy having only 6 maps
Well we all know that TF2 is Valve's test bed for new things as seen with Portal 2's hats. Now what game is Valve coming out with next, aw yes DOTA 2! At the time I saw DOTA 2 Valve had yet to really start talking about pricing but if TF2 is really getting a F2P version I bet you its testing for DOTA 2.
Now there are a few pros and cons I can see with TF2 going F2P
Pros:

Already established community

Chance for a much larger player base/community

Possibility for more hat related profits

Expanded economy with all the new players
Cons:

Hackers, oh god the hackers!

Idle accounts up the wazoo

Old players getting mad that something they paid for is now free
Now the 2nd and 3rd con could be fixed easly by disabling drops for those who acquired TF2 over F2P and charging them $10 (TF2's current price on steam) to active them. That way people can't just make 10+ idle account and destroy the economy by flooding the market with their "free" weapons and hats. As for the hackers I have no idea how this could be fixed without blocking online play which would defeat the purpose of having a F2P TF2 so I will leave the TF2 team to figure that out.
Now I could see this roll out in a number of ways. One way is that F2P TF2 rolls out with TF2 beta and normal TF2 still intact. Then Valve would watch how players react to the F2P version and how many people sign on. Then with this data in mind they could decide to drop F2P TF2 altogether indicating that DOTA 2 most likely will not be F2P or they could keep F2P TF2 and Normal TF2 side by side indicating that DOTA 2 might be F2P or they could kill off normal TF2 and replace it with F2P indicating that DOTA 2 will most likely be F2P or we could just be going nuts and its just this:
Or... it could be another internal beta.
the only time i play TF2 is when there is a new update. so this doesn't bother me to much, but people that payed should get something.
If it was to go free to play I'd expect something else for free.
All I want is old TF2 back, without the hats and the weapons and the maps. Exactly where it was when the game was first released.
They should make a F2P version, but keep the paid-for version and make it as it was before hats etc.
That way people who liked the old version and bought it get to keep their game, while people who want the new version are fine too since it's free.
They won't though. Having two versions of the game would be hell for them.

I wouldn't mind having the class specific updates included, though.
"FREE TO PLAY FPS, UNBALANCED SHITTY PREMIUM HATS PAY TO WIN ASSHOLES" I can see it now.
