Because 1: We know the story already. It doesn't work in the case of games mind you, unlike books, because games are already a visual media, plus the addition of placing yourself IN the world.
and 2: Silent protagonists aren't characters. They don't work well in transitions from one media to another.
Besides, if I was going to make a movie out of a game, these would not be my top choices. I don't feel they'd work as anything but games, especially Portal. Considering its a puzzle game, and that wouldn't work as a movie remotely.
dude valhalla rising is an amazing movie and that cyclops motherfucker never spoke
The only reason Gordon is silent is so that the player can place himself in the game.
If they made a movie, Gordon will talk. With Valve's writing and Abrams's directing skills, I'm VERY interested in what movie comes out of it, be it Portal or Half Life. And to a larger extent I'm interested in the game that Abrams and Valve are apparently talking about making.

Throwing an actor in to play Gordon destroys that character theory and would effect the future games featuring Gordon pretty strongly; I don't think it'd be a good idea
make a portal movie about the creation of GLaDOS and her descent into a crazy bitch
Gordon was silent because he was supposed to be an extension of the player. If he was portrayed by an actor, it would be Gordon Freeman, not necessarily the player of Half Life.
I respect JJ as a director, but seriously fuck off JJ you already have star wars and star trek.
Hollywood leave fucking half-life alone.
You do realize that Gabe Newell and Abrams are close friends, correct? Its not like Abrams is just going "Yeah, I want this so give it to me."
a portal movie would be kind of lame
like we just watch a girl sit back for 5 minutes and say hmmmm how do i solve this puzzle?
If this is ever made, i am going to love the fuck out of it. If they can portray everything in the correct way and not botch anything i'm going to like this. By botch i mean alter the storyline in a way it just fucks everything up, change the style of the combine (i.e making them like the military or some shit)
or just copy paste the game but in movie form with actors.
They could do Half Life 2 in the perspective of a resistance member and you only see Gordon for a few scenes and in background shots.
Yeah I would like if he chose this path over Gordan.
I could imagine a Forward Unto Dawn like accompany series for the release of the next installment of either game.

If they do that they should simply put it in the same universe but don't have Gordon and friends show up at all. At the very most there should be rumblings of him doing things elsewhere amongst resistance members as a shoutout to people who played the game but nothing that would alienate people whose first experience of the Half-Life world is the movie
Gabe said the lead actor in their video games was like a retarded autistic person... well I guess that's the perfect person to put in charge of the movie/s then.
Go for it JJ.
Ryan Gosling
it'll be Drive but with a goatee
oh my god Ryan Gosling as the main character (not as gordon but as some other character) would be fucking divine
best actor
hugh lorry as dr godran freamon pls
Snoop Dogg as Dog
Scott Lynch as Barney Calhoun
Could have a movie that starts with the Black Mesa indecent and leads into the 7 hour war. That could be quite interesting.
I can see a Half Life movie set in Black Mesa as a really good horror movie. It would have to follow someone other than Gordon though.
Either that or something based on the Seven Hour War, which would be incredibly awesome.

It's exactly why Opposing Force wasn't from Gordon's perspective. The mod Point of View is a perfect example of how you can tell a totally different story in the same world. With this kind of project there's always a chance they'll fuck up and it'll be horrible, but I really doubt Valve would allow the release of a HL movie that's a big turd because it would cause damage to the Half-Life name, same goes for Portal.
What matters is the world, not making a copy-paste of the game. There are many ways to make an interesting Portal movie that's not 1h58 of puzzles too.
Bryan Cranston for Gordon Freeman?
I actually think they could keep Gordon mute and still have him as the protagonist. Do exactly that, say he is mute and portray a personality via other methods (Valve are pretty well known for their ability to add personality to non-speaking/inanimate things). It could be utter shit, but if they pulled it off it would really add depth to a movie that may lack it otherwise.

Makeup can cover up wrinkles.

Also, by the time of Half-Life 2, he is technically in his 40s-50s.
Recreating the storyline of any HL or Portal game with the same protagonists would be a massive pisser, because the result would be nothing like the experience we had when we played the games. The silent protagonist may end up particularly cringe-worthy since the actor will likely perform nothing like how we imagined Gordon/Chell behaving and reacting while we were playing it. It's gonna feel awkward as fuck.
However, a brand new plotline that takes place in the same universe or even focused around the same events has good potential.

Jason Statham for every character.

15 minutes TF2 film is on the way.
I think JJ Abrams is an overrated director, if it was up to me I wouldn't want him directing or writing these.
