The story was sure HORRORble :v:

Don't forget it is October guys.
I bet if Gone Home didn't have the lesbian plot twist even less people would give a fuck about it
literally the only thing I ever hear about the game is that. Nothing else. No one discusses any of the other plot points in that. it's literally the only reason anyone ever talks it up.
I don't think I've heard of a single plot point aside from that even from people who enjoyed the game.
It's their trigger word.
is your trigger word anything that doesn't equate to you farting out of your mouth?

I saw some shit about it and thought it was dumb and didn't even know about the twist

Oh I guess here the guy talked about it like it wasn't even a twist
in hindsight it's even dumber that that's some big "twist"
So I actually "played" this recently.
Whether or not it qualifies as a "game" doesn't matter. Even judges on the merits of a walking-simulator, it wasn't exactly that great.
The pacing is what really wrecks it. If you're playing "properly" - a methodical search of the house, looking for clues - the "big reveal" is foreshadowed so heavily that by the time the game is ready to make it explicit, you're like "I get it, she's fucking gay, can we move on now?"
And then it doesn't move on, because that's basically the entire plot.
The only moment of emotional torque was when I was finally heading up to the attic, and the last tape had given me the idea that the sister had committed suicide up there. I had a sense of dread, feeling pretty sure that I was going to get up there and find a girl hanging from the rafters.
I'm not sure if that emotional torque was intentional on the creator's part. The happy ending did sort of come out of nowhere, making it feel like it might have been a last-minute change, but on the other hand, their writing elsewhere never showed that much subtlety.
The inescapable question hanging over Gone Home is "why was this story told in this medium?". It's not a game, but it uses so many game design elements that I can't call it anything except a "game-like experience".
Did being a GLE bring anything new to this story, that being told as a book or a movie or a comic or a song wouldn't have? I'm not sure it did. The sense of time - the background establishment of setting - could have been done in a well-made movie. The sense of exploration - figuring out what happened - could also have been easily done in any narrative media.
The only thing that might have been lost was the following of three separate plot threads. While the sister's lesbian love story is clearly the main one, the mother and father each had their own stories. But neither of those stories were at all interesting. The dad wrote some stories, they didn't sell well, then they did sell well, and then he started writing again. The mom thought about cheating and then she didn't. A GLE is perhaps the only way to tell stories like that completely in the background.
An interesting GLE to contrast it to is Dear Esther. Both of them, I'm not really sure what the point of telling that story as a GLE was. Dear Esther was even less like a game, but it was much better at actually telling a story worth telling. And while I can't think of anything that required either to be GLEs, I also can't think of anything that would have been improved if told as a movie or book or whatever.
I think Gone Home is an important game to play for game designers - as much for what it did right (building a setting, telling a story via background) as for what it did wrong (the actual stories it told).
Which is, perhaps, why it got nominated for GOTY so often. The games media is filled with either ex-designers or wannabe-designers, and to them the game is a lot more interesting. As a wannabe-designer myself, I can appreciate that. But as a player, Gone Home was pretty rubbish.
Gone Home didnt do anything new or better than shit that existed before it. Its rubbish all around.
The first game of its kind had a more interesting plot made by Roberta Williams just called Mystery house.
does it have "making [del]contacts for PR[/del] friends with critics" part of the making of?
Probably literally the only thing this game is riding on, there's been other non-games like this

but they didn't try to mislead anyone or manipulate journalism to their benefits

People get really worked up over this game huh
Why is it always shit games that get making of stories? Why cant there be a making of a good indie game like shovel knight?

So second coming of Jesus is inaccurate? When review outlets are tripping over each other to worship it? And other people in this thread who believe gone homo can do no harm and belittle anyone who disagrees?

I was just pointing out the person you were responding to said literally none of that, and you then accused them of putting words in your mouth. Chill out already it's a video game and really not that big of a deal.

Alright, fair enough. I just get pissed when people come in, shit on a person or group of people for having a different opinion, and then don't even bother articulating their point.
Calling gone homo's detractors "man children" is not acceptable. If this game is so fucking great, I'd like to see someone argue WHY that is. Rather than just shitting on anyone who disagrees.
Same goes for any topic. Actually argue your points.

You claim calling you children is unacceptable and inaccurate yet all you do to debate is hurl middle school level insults. If you seriously think you contribute to the conversation by saying "lolurgay" then people will say you're acting like a child.

That's because it's the only plot point, and the plot entirely. You walk around in a house and click random things until it triggers some audio cues about nothing relevant until you find the one that says "Oh Im lebanese" and the game ends.

I just know the game has a little more
SURELY its about more than that
that surely can't be the ONLY PLOT point there

I watched the game so long ago
I barely remember what it was about. Time to recollect.
You go home and nobody is in
You look at shoes for some reason
You find out you have a sister who knew the house very well and had a friend and was your sister
You find a bunch of porn mags around the house
Your father was obsessed with JFK and wrote some fiction about him
You find out your parents had gone out for a weekend and will be back soon
You find out your sister really liked her friend
You find out your sister consumed your dad's porn
You find out your sister is in fact gay for her friend and had left with her for good
Game over
I mean it may be kind of interesting if you have the most boring life ever or something.

Where did I say "lulurgay" exactly? Can you go one post without shoving words down my throat?
Are you ever going to answer my question? Or are you going to resort to more name calling?
It's okay that people like the game. It's okay that people dislike the game. I'm just dying to know why you're so defensive that you resort to petty insults whenever someone doesn't go "game of the year 20/10."
I take it you guys aren't fans of this game?
Why is it always shit games that get making of stories? Why cant there be a making of a good indie game like shovel knight?
because their developers aren't vain enough to need to be in the public spotlight and don't care about one
Just like most people I didn't get the overwhelming praise either. Before playing Gone Home I tried Cart Life. And what struck me about that game was how it took regular video game mechanics and mixed it with the harshness and cruelty of the real world. The characters you can choose all work as a street vendor in different areas and the game manages to add a lot of depth to the mundane tasks that you do, a lot like Papers, Please actually, while also expanding on the time and money management. Frankly the game deserves a lot more attention that it got in the end. And then I played Gone Home whose unique characteristic was the revelation of a character being gay. In 2013. Wow, so progressive and brave.
I take it you guys aren't fans of this game?
I don't hate it with toxic anger, I just think the game is overrated. I don't blame the game itself for this, I blame journalism wanting to find a game that makes them feel "progressive" for their readers.
well yeah that's the point
the game sucks because it's nothing except for the fact that its lesbians
i mean dont get me wrong it had a specific target demographic it was pandering to, and oh boy did it hit with exactly who they wanted it to. but that doesn't make it anything worth praise, there's no technical or artistic merit to it. a synopsis of my time spent in high school would've made a more engaging plot, to be honest.

oops thought you were saying sarcastically lmao im stupid
either way ill leave the post up to address the game in general

Little more context than that:
-A: The game is a fourth of the size the devs said it would be, and well after they were under development, this claim wasn't made when it was still a concept or anything
-B: Gushing eerily unilateral praise about how groundbreaking it was and how it literally redefined gaming as we know it from all the usual suspects
-C: Proven allegations of cross nepotism later documented as true
-D: Any criticism of the game's failure to say be the length the devs said it would be or the fact it misrepresents the political nuance of the time with current day politics is regarded as bigotry
-E: revelation the lesbian part was shifted to another character to get deliberate sympathy/praise points and also to ship the game as done without any of the other promised content, so where exactly did all the money go
-F: Could have been a text game without the amount of work put into it
