Probably because its a terrible idea...
Thing is who the hell wants to constantly carry around an adapter
I think that's the point.
By adding the adapter by default, they're not making the phone DoA for anyone with expensive headphones to begin with, but when the headphones inevitably break, anyone who'll stick with Apple for the nearest future will have less reason to get a 3,5mm headphone compared to going with the lightning. I mean, why not skip the adapter altogether when there's no longer something keeping them to 3,5mm?
It'll fail horrendously without proper support from manufacturers though. They'll most likely need a good feature set, otherwise the loss of the adapter won't make up for possible compatibility issues or better quality of 3,5mm headphones with the same price. It won't matter if there's not enough choices compared to 3,5mm either, as no one's gonna buy a shitty/old model just because it's the only one that has a lightning implementation. It's not an entirely crazy idea however, and they can always backpedal(or ignore everything) if it doesn't work out.

Don't dismiss criticism as a bandwagon
Don't dismiss criticism as a bandwagon
That's kind of a slippery slope because overly agressive or unwaranted criticism kinda is a bandwagon

or maybe the thing being criticised is just that shitty

Read through this thread and try saying that again with a straight face
I love to be cynic about tech as much as the next guy but this pure shitposting and outrage filled bandwagon is just as bad as brand loyalty. It's pretty clear most of this threads posters haven't even bothered to read the article.

unwarranted criticism? calling out apple on making dogshit stupid decisions is unwarranted?
They ditched socket for the sake of waterproofing. Also phones will come bundled with headphones updated for new port and with this horrible adapter

You probably could, but that would be an additional adapter not included with the phone that'll cost you.

I did read the article. The lens thing is cool, but it doesn't make up for what effectively kills 1/3 of what I want out of a phone: music. I'm not going to bother with proprietary adapters for something so simple. I'm not going to bother with something that prevents me from charging my phone and listening to music at the same time. If you want to call that a bandwagon, so be it, but I'll have to ask what makes you not just a spiteful contrarian? How are we sure that you aren't just already at the predetermined conclusion that there's a hivemind instead of just a fair agreement that Apple is doing something dumb? Should I just walk into any thread and say "wow, what a hivemind about guns" or look at people as individuals who can coincidentally agree or come together out of common interest?
I have kind things to say about Apple, don't worry.

Which is exactly why this is a stupid idea.

Look, I think the "charge your earbuds charger" idea is awul aswell, but the way people just jump on the opportunity to shitpost about apple because it's the hip thing to do is iritating
I mean, come on, people aren't wven trying to hide it

They already did this with the Air, $100 to connect to hdmi from the one port it has. .

I'll shit on Android any day, and to be honest, I have. I shit on Windows. I shit on Linux. Everything has problems. Everything I like has problems. And I think there's a terrible hate mob for Apple as well, except my threshold is for when they use their disdain for Apple as a means to insult their userbase.
I don't think people are shitposting, really. I think the claims are legitimate, save for a few jokes. That's normal. I don't think it's a problem that people use "idiot" when they think Apple did something idiotic after a long pattern of doing idiotic things.

Is this the only example (which even appeared after you said there's a "bandwagon")?

Oh don't get me wrong, I agree with you. This is a conscious business decision with less than honest motive behind it.

Literally your two last posts before this one
Literally your two last posts before this one
My question would be why does it matter? Just respond specifically to the posts you dislike and explain what's really wrong with them. So far it seems like you're just saying everyone's shitposting but you're not really providing any examples and any reasons for your thinking, which doesn't make for a good discussion. It's just name blaming - it's why I asked why wouldn't you just be considered the spiteful contrarian? When people get caught up on name-calling instead of actual arguing nothing is ever done, which is why I'm not actually calling you a contrarian but just bringing up the point that trying to call you out on that would just make the conversation dumber and derailed.
The thing about earphones is that they can be super cheap. I've seen them for less than $10, and they work fine enough for a lot of people. Bluetooth headphones are great, but are really only for people who don't care about audio quality, are more expensive for worse quality, and are also more hassle with charging. Furthermore, I guess this is the death of car aux cables for Apple users - guess you gotta get a bluetooth receiever aux thing for the car? Jesus.
3.5mm headphone jacks are fine. They're taking away a feature, not adding one. That's always been my beef with Apple. They pride themselves on less and calling it more.
I got this pair of Bluetooth headphones on a Black Friday deal for like $100.
They're my every day use both for computer and my phone when I commute to and from work.
The sound is great, they're comfy to wear for long stretches of time and I charge them overnight.
If you want more bass you can hit a button that makes the damn thing shake at the bass tones.
Bluetooth sound may have been shit once in the past but these days? It can sound just as good as a wired connection

It depends your investment. I've used headphones that are good enough for me, but would come across as having too many artifacts to the kind of person that would use an amplifier with their iPhone. And whereas a lot of people would be happy with $10 earphones, the closest thing in the Bluetooth realm would probably be like $30 and would suffer from range issues and what not. At least, that's what I think.
Plus tacking on $100 to a $600 is laaaaaaaaame.

I guess this depends on your usage areas and if you're buying them with the phone or not. I've had my phone for a while and decided to get a pair of headphones mostly for my room so I'm free of cables, but they work well for my phone as well when I'm out so it's dual purpose. And of course the purchase stood alone outside of my phone.
But I can see how tacking on an additional $100 onto those $600 would be a bitter pill.

what keyboard software are you using?
Literally your two last posts before this one
My two last posts were: a post about cheap adapters falling apart (which is universally true), and a post calling out apple on their decisions, if you consider it "bandwagon", let me hear your reasoning why their decisions are actually smart.
What BBC neglects to mention is that the adapter to 3,5mm is included with the phone.
What is charging
[editline]7th September 2016[/editline]
Apple claiming that Bluebooth is "more reliable" than an AUX port is classic Apple bullshit as well. I actually could not believe what I was watching.
I don't care if you spend $500 on Bluetooth headphones. No matter what, it'll sound worse than the same speakers wired (Whether AUX or USB/USB-C/Proprietary Lightning Shit). It's also another device to charge, die, and lose. And it taxes your phone's battery harder. Which is kind of ridiculous when you're losing battery life year after year because Apple has decided that phones need to be thinner and thinner.
Jokes, all around. The only people who still think Apple is a credible company are the people who know nothing about technology and how it works.
Thing is who the hell wants to constantly carry around an adapter
To be fair I constantly carry around an OTG adapter with me but v:v:v
This is a laughably bad decision currently but overall I think it could be a good one with time, mainly because in my opinion it will shift the mobile audio market into having a stronger emphasis on Bluetooth and hopefully lower the price of Bluetooth earbuds/headphones and improve Bluetooth audio quality in general. I cannot wait until the day when everything is wireless and I can get a pair of Bluetooth buds for as cheap as I can a pair of wired buds, mainly because I've broken a few pairs of earbuds by getting them caught on something on accident and it's really annoying. However, as it stands right now, the current Bluetooth spec simply cannot match the same quality as a wired connection, which is why I think this is a terrible decision at the moment. Maybe it would be more acceptable on the iPhone 8 or 8s.
I think Lightning audio accessories will just remain as they are now - an overpriced niche. People who buy Lightning audio accessories can't use them on any other Apple product except an iPad, iPod, or iPhone, and that will defer the average person from buying them (not to mention their needlessly inflated prices). Bluetooth is the future and what people will buy en masse because it will work on basically any smartphone, laptop, or tablet.
It was mostly shitty engineering and not much to do with the thinness. I don't recall any stories of the 6S bending the same way.
Not disagreeing that it's stupid how thin they're making them though. I'd rather have a well-built brick with a huge battery, but all the mainstream brands are following the thinness trend too. It's weird as hell, as "3-4x battery life of competition" seems like a much better way to sell a phone over the competition compared to "0,5mm thinner" or "4K UHD Screen" or "6" diagonal"
The 6S is made of a different type of aluminium.
Removing the headphone jack makes room for more components how exactly? I imagine they had to remove it to give us the wonderful and much demanded feature of force feedback on the home button. Thank you based Apple, now I can know when I've pressed the home button on the new iPhone. It was honestly hard to tell on older ones if I did because it didn't vibrate. The tactile clickiness and taking me out of the current open app just wasn't enough to give me feedback that I had pressed it.
It's about time this feature was added.
Eh? The removal of the home button is one of the greatest things. Try googling 'unresponsive home button'. And another step to make it water resistent.
I wouldn't say that Bluetooth headphones necessarily sound worse than wired ones, but fuck if I'm going to bother charging yet another item before I head out.
