• Apple's iPhone 7 ditches traditional headphone socket
I wouldn't say that Bluetooth headphones necessarily sound worse than wired ones
They are demonstrably worse. Even APTx, a 'lossless' Bluetooth codec, has to do audio compression in the mids to save bandwidth in bursts. With current tech any pair of headphones will always sound better over USB or AUX than Bluetooth. In my personal experience Bluetooth headphones are also much, much quieter than cheaper wired headphones.
Apple courageously forgets to put headphone jack on new iPhones, news at 11
What is charging
how often do you actually listen to music on your phone while charging it i legitimately don't think i've ever done that
how often do you actually listen to music on your phone while charging it i legitimately don't think i've ever done that
When I'm at my school library I'll sometimes charge while listening.
how often do you actually listen to music on your phone while charging it i legitimately don't think i've ever done that
Anybody who hooks their phone to their car speakers. Literally anybody I know with a decent sound system does this. And they use a 3.5mm cable to do it and keep their phone charged as well. You may not do it but that doesn't mean it's never done.
They ditched socket for the sake of waterproofing. Also phones will come bundled with headphones updated for new port and with this horrible adapter [img_thumb]http://store.storeimages.cdn-apple.com/4973/as-images.apple.com/is/image/AppleInc/aos/published/images/M/MX/MMX62/MMX62?wid=890&hei=890&fmt=jpeg&qlt=95&op_sharpen=0&resMode=bicub&op_usm=0.5,0.5,0,0&iccEmbed=0&layer=comp&.v=1472256277309[/img_thumb] It's worth mentioning that this will push market of other phones towards USB-C, so that's not so bad
Everybody else managed waterproofing without ditching the jack, and Apple's engineers aren't picked straight from a 7th grade special needs class. They could probably manage.
how often do you actually listen to music on your phone while charging it i legitimately don't think i've ever done that
Most nights when I listen to a podcast or watch twitch or something. Whenever i use a powerbank while traveling, like at the airport. Whenever i forget to charge my phone and i charge it at work. Besides that no Bluetooth support for either the car or the audio system(s).
Everybody else managed waterproofing without ditching the jack, and Apple's engineers aren't picked straight from a 7th grade special needs class. My job is opening these piles of shit and fixing what's wrong and I can tell you right now that waterproofing is an absolute lie. I've seen so many phones come in that are "rugged" and "waterproof" that got dunked in toilets and they were fucked beyond belief. Claiming a phone is waterproof is like using contrast ratio as a legitimate selling point for a display. It's a buzzword meant to attract attention. Just like some of these up and coming phones that claim to be "indestructible". Nope. Not true at all. Waterproofing just improves the odds of survival but not by much. I guarantee if you tossed an s6 active in a container of water and compared it to an iPhone 4 and left them submerged for 2 minutes you would end up with the same result. Two fucked phones.

Doesn't mean it's not usually advertised by companies and their partners as being 'wateproof' with underwater unboxings and shit, though.
Plus it is less comfortable to hold.
Especially Apple's new rounded off designs that IMO are almost unusable without a case of some kind. (Not that they're unique to this, my S7 Edge needs a case or you hit the edge of the screen all the time.)

Apple has continually made countless, retarded design choices in their devices. There's a reason there's a whole group of people who do not like them. It's not hate for the sake of hate. Tell me. Do you firmly believe that it is acceptable for a company to re-license and re-market basically the same exact thing year in and year out as an entirely new device? This is why I quit giving a fuck about Nintendo. "NEW" Mario Brothers! "NEW" Nintendo DS! "NEW" "NEW" "NEW". It wasn't "NEW", it was the same rehashed shit with some minor changes here and there and the occasional actual fundamental change. Apple has been just like that for the last 5 or 6 years. As a technician that works on them I can even vouch for the interior design of all of them. It's the same exact shit. You know what the S and C stand for in 5S and 5C? "Same Exact" and "Copy". The only huge difference between the S and C and normal 5 is the inclusion of Siri and TouchID. Big. Fucking. Deal. But it's still (at the time of release) a $500 to $700 device. What the FUCK? Apple has not made any "leaps and bounds" in innovation in a very, very long time. When the fuck will we get an iPhone that isn't a pile of shit? When will I be able to easily transfer files to and from an iPhone without sacrificing a virgin and drinking goat's blood? When will they start taking dangerous risks and actually innovating, god dammit? A decade ago I would say they were truly innovators, because they paved the way in the handheld market like no other company ever did before. But now it's just resell after resell. Same shit, different year. Rarely are there any serious overhauls or fundamental changes. At least, none that make sense. When will they make a phone that is faster than anything on the market? I don't give a shit about how thin it is. I don't give a shit about the camera. I don't care about biometric locks. I'm not a god damn NSA agent. There's nothing important on my phone that I need MY FINGERPRINT to keep it secure. There's no innovation in the smartphone market anymore, there hasn't been for years. Apple prides itself on being innovators but the last 5 or 6 years tell a very different story. You know what the only major hardware difference was between the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4s? The plastic midframe that secures the LCD and glass panel into the phone. It has slightly offset mounting brackets for screws. THAT'S. IT. WHOA. HUGE INNOVATION. The only "innovation" Apple has done is prevent people like me from fixing their devices for people who do not have the time nor the money to pay Apple to fix their device for them. The bracket difference in the 4 and 4S only exists for the reason of making it more difficult for someone like me to change out screens. The lack of schematics and how I have to incriminate myself to acquire them makes me a criminal in the eyes of Apple's lawyers when you come in with an iPhone 6 with a faulty TriStar chip that prevents it from properly charging and don't want to spend $700 on another phone from Apple. The iPad Air 2? Apple decided it would be best to adhere the glass and LCD together at the factory using optically clear adhesive. Which means just changing the glass out like on previous models is impossible and requires a much more expensive part (the glass and LCD already fused). Apple has been in constant combat with the repair world and this most recent step is just adding more to my list of reasons to absolutely hate them.
No one's going to follow. Apple has already pissed a lot of people off.
Samsung, LG and co will follow and adapt but they won't be using lighting, they'll use USB-C What Apple has done is effectively split the audio industry, before it was one standard, now it'll be two and only one is exclusive to apple devices so audio manufactures either have to keep to their guns about 3.5mm or make the same headphone but with two different connectors If Apple just stuck with USB-C, then the discussion would've already been over
USB-C/Lightning based headphones aren't a bad idea IN THEORY, but unless they outfit the device with two ports, it's not going to take off simply because some people do listen to music with that port plugged in. And I doubt wireless will be the answer either. Bluetooth audio has improved in leaps and bounds, but it will never be as high in both quality and reliability as a dedicated cord. Not to mention that great sounding wireless headphones are usually either hard to come by, or are expensive as fuck. Why buy $150 wireless buds that you constantly have to recharge when you can buy $30 buds that sound just as good. Is wireless really worth such a high premium when it has such little gains?
S7 has been tested underwater for over 12 hours and hasn't had any effect.
What kills waterproofing seals is when the phone lands on water. You can hold it in your hand and submerge it and it will most likely be fine. What people don't understand about the water resistant shit is water is still a resistive force. When your phone takes a dive and lands in the toilet from your shirt pocket or hand it's no different than jumping off of a diving board in a pool and doing a belly flop. It hurts. The initial impact delivers A LOT of force and that is usually enough to compromise the seal and let water in. Most OEMs test water resistance with positive air pressure. They pump air into the phone and up the pressure until something pops. And wherever it pops, that's the limit. But that's hardly a real world test because it leaves the most important factor out, how hard the phone hits the water. [editline]8th September 2016[/editline] Also, it's worth mentioning that the water itself is also a much important variable in overall water resistance. Absolute pure water, like what you'd find in a jug of distilled water, yeah. That's probably what OEMs base all of their tests on. But water from a lake, water in a pool, water in the toilet, and water in the ocean? Not even close. They'll all have a variety of densities and those minor changes can have an astronomical impact on the actual force applied to the phone when it hits the water. Plus, leaving your phone in a container of water for 12 hours is nothing like a real world scenario. In the real world you'll forget it's in your pocket and your asshole friend will push you into the pool. Whoops! Guess what happened to your phone? You fell in water, it surrounded the phone, maybe not break the seal, but as you fall and rise through the water that pressure variance will greatly change on the exterior of the phone. You know how it's dangerous for divers to surface too quickly and it's based largely on overall body weight? Well imagine decompression sickness on a smartphone. It's a shitload lighter and smaller than your average human, and what do you think will happen to it when you quickly bring it out from the bottom of a pool?
-rant I agree with about repairs-
As someone who repairs phones and various electronic devices for both their job and in their spare time: This guy is 100% correct. Apple actively works to make repair harder and harder, and not just in their phones and tablets but in their computers too. They have a mantra of 'replace not repair' when it comes to devices. Sure, this is easier for the techs involved and faster for customers, but it's so goddamn wasteful and extremely expensive for all parties involved, except Apple. Sadly, this kind of thinking has spread to other manufacturers too. Good fucking luck replacing the back glass or even the screen in a Sony Xperia device, everything's glued in place and requires fiddly strips of adhesive to replace. So many people fail to understand water resistance in devices. IP68 does not mean the device can and should be used under water, it's purely accident protection in case you drop it in a puddle.
And then we have shit like the rice myth. This is what your average phone looks like after it's been eaten to hell by water. This ties into the rice meme. That shit needs to die. What do people think water does to electronics? Rice isn't going to clean this shit. But its smart to use it for accidents like dropping it in the toilet. I've taken my phone apart and put it in rice and used it again after letting it dry. One of the most important things you can do if able is to take the battery out ASAP when you drop it in water as some of the solutes in most water sources can be conductive and short out the battery which is Very Bad.
The thing about earphones is that they can be super cheap. I've seen them for less than $10, and they work fine enough for a lot of people. Bluetooth headphones are great, but are really only for people who don't care about audio quality, are more expensive for worse quality, and are also more hassle with charging. Furthermore, I guess this is the death of car aux cables for Apple users - guess you gotta get a bluetooth receiever aux thing for the car? Jesus. 3.5mm headphone jacks are fine. They're taking away a feature, not adding one. That's always been my beef with Apple. They pride themselves on less and calling it more.
BT headphones for about $60 and up are a lot better than a $10 wired pair. Bluetooth had come a long way. I got myself satechi aluminium headphones and the difference between wire (which it supports) and bt is only noticeable when you compare directly. And a 2 hour charge once in a few days heavily outweighs having to fiddle with an annoying wire while outside and the risk of damaging it. I'm not defending apple in any way, only modern bluetooth headphones for outdoors listening.
