I don't see it making Microsoft any money. It's like becoming the producer of a band that was a one hit wonder a few years prior. I'll be very surprised if Microsoft breaks even
Uh you do understand that minecraft is still selling like hot cakes? The supply of kids is limitless :v: They can probably not do anything with it at all and be even in a year or two. But they'll probably launch some huge PR campaign and merchandise and a lot of stuff
Minecraft is the best selling PC game of all time. Of course it's valued high.
Suddenly, Minecraft 2!
i just hope.. that M$ isn't stupid about this, it's selling well as it is but i just know.. i can see it already starting, this will rock the boat and send it sinking
And then once everyone leaves Mojang to make their own new studios they'd have spent 2.5 billion for just a name.
They probably don't care about the people, but the brand.
I want us all to be wrong about the outcome of this, like with the Facebook purchase of Oculus Rift. Maybe Microsoft will be the best thing that ever happened to MC, who knows.
Microsoft will use Minecraft to relaunch Games For Windows Live.
I just thought of something. There are a few things that refrence minecraft because, as far as I know, notch is cool with that sort of thing. But once microsoft's calling the shots, will they send their army of lawyers out into the world? What I mean is, something like that minecraft level in borderlands, whereas notch was cool with that, would microsoft start suing people, retroactively even?
RIP the 50 quintillion hunger games videos that clog up my entire youtube feed.
rip nonexistent modding api I thought it was just slow, now I know it's just not happening at all
But microsoft is well k.owb for its well built, well dovumented apis
Well this sucks: The issue is Bukkit has already died. Sponge is the proposed replacement but Sponge Relies on Spout API which was built around Forge. If CpW decides hes going to quit (Which he will) Sponge will die out and so will forge. Without Forge basically the modding community will die out (Not to mention if its another DMCA fest). Which means everyone will be Stuck on 1.6.4/1.7.10 until someone can re-build it (6 months from now).
Notch made a statement on it, saying "it's unlikely" he'll stay with company if it is indeed purchased.
[sp]The real reason they're buying Mojang is for scrolls. Gotta compete with Hearthstone[/sp] Mojang is no where near worth that much. They made minecraft which by it's self is kind of shit, it's the modders that made minecraft fucking fantastic.
Mojang already has parts of what Microsoft would do, eg preventing people from monetizing their own content that uses their game while Mojang takes things mods have done and implements them without permission so Mojang instead can get money for taking the work of the modmakers
it's not unrealistic to think that microsoft would open up a modding API and greatly accelerate game development IMO In fact I'd put good money on them encouraging modding- Microsoft do distribute their own dev tools for games freely and will even give you benefits if you say, contribute to the windows phone store enough

It's music, toys, possible animated series, possible movies, content for Xbox, clothing, etc. Minecraft is a big IP now and MS could integrate it with a lot of their product lines. They could probably work to use it to sell their tablets maybe. A big thing is that MC has a hugely broad audience. Mainly children who beg their parents for stuff.
Notch made a statement on it, saying "it's unlikely" he'll stay with company if it is indeed purchased.
if bloomberg is to be believed, it was notch that approached microsoft to sell his company, so its kinda him cashing out in a way
