I've been hearing bad things about the changes they've made. I'll try it but UT4 and that other arcadey arena shooter nostalgia trip game is something you guys should look forward to more than this.
I just tried it. Never played before, but it is really fun. The loadout thing is really odd, though. It feels weird selecting your guns before you spawn. Makes it feel like a different game.
I can genuinely say for real now, if you want the REAL quake 3 just buy Quake 3 arena. They completely ruined this version if you weren't around for the shitstorm that was the update earlier.
Yay it's finally on steam in all its dumbed down and fucked up "glory"
I remember hearing that John Carmack said this was his favorite Quake game?
I was so excited for this, then they unveiled that terrible update to bring it in line with more modern shooters
The changes aren't game-breaking, but if you're a purist then stick to Duel or Classic servers. If you don't have the money for Quake 3 by itself, then this works for sure because you can just play your heart out with random folks or bots.
tbh the changes aren't that bad the autobhop is shit anyways so its like it doesnt exist all i play are clan arena and instagib so idk about the loadouts and shit but they haven't changed much
i just tried a server with the loadouts and it felt really odd. at least they don't force me to play it. then again, all i play is clan arena anyways.
I don't think they completely thought this through.
this game is fun as balls and I like the loadouts
I'll give this a try. I still have Quake 3 and Open Arena if I don't like it.
Well I installed it and played it. It's pretty fun despite the changes. I'd still rather play regular Quake 3 over it, but it's still a great free to play shooter.
I personally liked Quake III when playing it with friends, but playing it online in public was extremely hard and frustrating to me. Here is hope that there will be many newbs in quakelive now that it is free on steam :v:. Maybe we could have a facepunch match on Q3 some time?
quakelive now that it is free :v:
Wow... This came out in 2009, or even earlier (Made my account in 2009)
wow this is bullshit this game doesn't support 1280x1024 resolution
The heavy machinegun is just bullshit. It wasn't even in the Browser version.
Does anyone still play Quake 3 Rocket Arena?
Does anyone still play Quake 3 Rocket Arena?
They basically remade it into Clan Arena, i used to play alot of it.
The heavy machinegun is just bullshit. It wasn't even in the Browser version.
In fact, the Heavy Machinegun is horrible, overall.
Is the HMG not a minigun now? fuck
Is the HMG not a minigun now? fuck
It's basically an assault rifle. The Machinegun is as it always was, while the Heavy Machinegun has its own ammo type (not that that matters with universal ammo pickups now) and fires much more rapidly, but with a bit more spread. It's not that great, the chip damage is hard to use for netting kills without another weapon to soften them up, but it's a nice alt option I guess.

This loadout system is really retarded in places. Why the plasma rifle is a secondary is beyond my realms of god damn imagination since you can do some really fucking crazy things and the damage output is definitely more potent then the Lightning Gun at medium ranges. Hell, you can grind walls with it in the latest version and in combination with the rocket launcher you can pretty much navigate everything at super speed, assuming you know what your doing. I mainly use the shotgun because of how damn easy it is to jump around a player and to instantly kill someone with it for a full slug to the face depending on the health. As for primaries,i don't usually use any other primary except for Rocket Launcher. The whole rocket jumping mechanic trumps alot of the attributes the other guns have except for maybe the Rail gun, since its pretty easy to finish off someone provided you can make the shots. It depends on personal preference and more importantly it all relies on how well you know your map design.
the latest update isn't nearly as bad as some people are making it out to be. it is NOTHING but beneficial and more fun for the simpler pubs like FFA, TDM, or CTF - if you don't like it, there are not only plenty of servers running the classic ruleset but also a few other gamemodes that don't employ it! the W to hold bhop is fine, and honestly the old jumping mechanic already made it piss easy to time jumps anyways, the autohop barely makes a difference. i see this as NOTHING but good for the game
The update isn't nearly as bad as some people make it out to be, the bunnyhopping is really slow on auto, you might aswell time it yourself, and the item timers really help people like me, who are awful at remembering rthe respawn times. Map control is still very important, and I feel it's even more thanks to the mega power-ups having a special indication on the HUD, so now entire teams go to the spawn area. I feel like the only thing that might need a rework is the loadout system, because FFA is a clusterfuck of plasma everywhere, maybe not having it on FFA is a good idea, but it isn't a bad addition on CTF and other team based modes. That HMG is really sucky IMO, dunno why they even included it. Also, more classic servers would be nice.
So I decided to install this game again just to see if it really was completely ruined like some of the more pessimistic people were claiming it to be. Note that I'm not exactly a veteran player, my only experience with Quake is playing maybe 100 hours or so of QL a few years ago. So I jumped into the game, played for a few hours, and found out that it actually still feels really fun to play. But I do have some thoughts and concerns about the changes. Automatic bunnyhopping: Not a bad change, but at the same time, it feels kind of unnecessary. They couldn't make it really fast because then it would be too noob friendly, so it ended up being something that doesn't help you much at all. You can learn basic strafejumping in like 10 minutes and it's significantly faster. Maybe they should've just put a strafejumping tutorial into the game. Damage numbers and item timers: I actually really like this change, it provides important information to the newcomers without directly buffing anyone's abilities. People with good map knowledge will still have an advantage here. Loadouts and universal ammo pickups: This one I'm not so happy with. On one hand it's good that you have a fighting chance against a fully loaded up opponent right when you spawn, but it makes the game too spammy when everyone is running around with rocket launchers and railguns all the time. And it certainly doesn't help that you always have ammo waiting for you right around the next corner so that you can immediately continue the spamfest. Having a BFG with practically infinite ammo is also kind of OP. This change also removes a lot of the incentive to roam around the map looking for pickups. Right now I'm already pretty happy with my default loadout, so all I have to look for is some ammo and armor pickups and I'm ready to run directly into almost any fight. IMO they need to tone this one down a bit. Bring the old ammo boxes back and maybe make it so that you only spawn with the chaingun + one of the "secondary" weapons that you choose.
Maybe they should've just put a strafejumping tutorial into the game.
They removed all of the tutorials for rocket jumping and strafe jumping for some reason.
