• Sonic Boom uses CryEngine to achieve 'lush, tropical, beachy' look

I was going to make a satire joke like "it looks so bad because it's the console version duh" then I remembered it's Sonic. PC version? What PC version?
This is all secretly a ploy by really dedicated Sonic fans to convince Sega to never allow the west to develop Sonic games again after they heard the Central City theme that Bioware made:
this game will be terrible i await the actual next sonic game made by the sonic team (even the sonic team hates this shit), not this western dev attempt. seriously have they not learned from sonic chronicles that giving western devs the sonic ip is a bad idea
Well at least the show still looks ok I guess
It's not like Sonic is that great of a character to begin with, but at least he never spoke on Genesis. Every time I see Sonic I feel like I'm going to violated with terrible puns and Alternative Rock.
^ Nice hivemind. Edit: That was directed at The Duke's and Wii60's post but I got ninja'd. I don't even like Sonic.
you associate CryEngine with lush, tropical, beachy things
No, the big games based on CryEngine just happened to be Far Cry and Crysis which are usually tropical. I associate CryEngine with motherfuckin' STAR CITIZEN. [t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/111996868/2014/bengal-carrier.jpg[/t] tropical as fuck, ain't it?
^ Nice hivemind.
What are you talking about? I'm not trying to follow what everyone else is saying, I'm stating how I sincerely feel. Sonic from the start was a weird character design I wasn't really fond of. The Genesis games were alright, but I feel like it's not really a speedy game if you have to stop constantly and lose all momentum to get around obstacles (or otherwise just say screw it and skip the entire level). I liked Sonic Adventure but hated all the characters, and starting from Adventure on it's just gone farther and farther downhill with the introduction of Shadow the Edgy Razor and Silver the Unemotive Walking Pile of Angst. And even with the gameplay of the 3D Sonic games, it's nothing to write home about. You walk around and you jam the jump button with the intention of letting your homing attack take out everything in your path.

It's like a 1990s CGI show
What happened to the Hedgehog engine, anyway? That thing looked be-a-utiful
What happened to the Hedgehog engine, anyway? That thing looked be-a-utiful
I don't think it could do some of the stuff that Cryengine can do gameplay-wise
I don't think it could do some of the stuff that Cryengine can do gameplay-wise
Mhm i think they're going for a more open kind of area with this one than the others. I get the feeling that the current iteration of the hedgehog engine is more primed for movement in a set direction
Sonic Racing Transformed looked amazing so no doubt this will look better than that alpha screenshot/
the sonic boom models are getting their details from the normal mapping. [t]http://img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20140213175248/sonic/images/3/31/Tails_Sonic_Boom_V2.png[/t] click to see what i mean [sp]it doesn't even look like they have a normal map in the image[/sp]
wow, it's blatantly obvious they used corel painter with some thick paint brushes to make the 'texture' of his fur. it's just this side of being a photoshop filter I know half a dozen artists who could paint a brilliant texture for the model that would have a good stylized look that fits the theme or a better one (and they'd do it for $20 and some pizza) [editline]e[/editline]

one thing I don't associate cryengine with is being able to count the polygons on major things like Tails' TAILS if you had shown me this picture out of context I would have thought it was an average gmod screencap ripped from a random deviantart page
With this game, I hope they add some interesting twist to the Sonic series that makes it more than what I stated before. There are entire sessions where I ever had to do was homing attack EVERYTHING. Jumping on Goombas is more fun because at least I have to land on them myself, not resort to the aimbot jump of lameness. I say that because although I don't think Sonic is a great character, I'm not rooting for it to fail.
I was actually looking forward to Sonic Boom at first, but the more I see of it the less sure I am that I'm going to even somewhat like it.
They have chosen the worst screenshot for their article: http://www.shacknews.com/game/sonic-boom/screenshots?gallery_id=28551&screen_id=733970
I dunno man, they're all pretty bad. I mean fucking hell did they recycle textures from the dreamcast edition of sonic adventure? These are promotional shots people, literally hand picked screenshots of the game to display the BEST IT CAN OFFER.
Hopefully this wreck will make people buy Generations instead.
I still want to see the new knuckles glide. Just the thought alone makes me chuckle.

Wtf is up with the stupid bandages wraps on the characters?
...
That's a nice beach, they should have used that engine instead.
And apparently this is being made by Sly Cooper vets or something like that? I'm sure that in motion, if I remember the trailer right, the game doesn't look as bad as the promotional shots, but honestly, I don't have high hopes for this one. Even if I were to disconnect it in my head from proper Sonic games, it basically looks like a generic co-op platformer beat-em-up with Sonic characters from what little we've seen so far.
Wtf is up with the stupid bandages wraps on the characters?
2cool4skin
I believe bandaging or taping is usually done for parkour reasons. It keeps clothing tight against the skin and reduces the risk it gets stuck on things. When you're jumping across rooftops, the last thing you want is to have your pants get snagged on a railing or something.

I didn't even mean hivemind in a bad way, I just though it was funny they both brought up Sonic Chronicles at the same time.
seriously have they not learned from sonic chronicles that giving western devs the sonic ip is a bad idea
The reviews for Sonic Chronicles weren't that bad actually.
At least the cycle didn't even begin with this one since we all knew it was shit from the start.
