Gone Home easter egg alludes to shared universe with Bioshock

because valve and rockstar weren't audacious enough to suggest that they were in the same universe? it was just a friendly reference rather than trying to tie unrelated threads together.
I'm a huge fan of the Bioshock games, never played Gone Home, and I'm having a hard time mustering the conviction to care so much about this.
i'd rather not have them tied together, if that's all the same to you.
there's nothing tying them together. not the setting, not the aesthetic or atmosphere, nothing.
Did you read the article? It says theres a small easter egg in the game related to Bioshock.
people need to stop freaking out about this game, it does nothing noteworthy and correct me if I'm wrong but how exactly is a title on a cartridge suggesting it's in the same universe? That's like saying the tf2 cereal box in l4d means they're in the same universe
bill confirmed for engineers grandpa

It's not so much about the cartidge itself as it is the guy from the company straight-up saying he thinks it hints at bioshock ties.
On the surface, Gone Home doesn't seem to have much to do with BioShock. However, The Fullbright Company's Steve Gaynor revealed that a very tiny easter egg suggests that it is set in the same universe as Irrational's beloved Bioshock franchise--"in a totally non-litigious way," of course.
the sheer motherfucking AUDACITY of this video game reference
AUDACIOUS reference in the video game
where do they even get off

it's not the fucking reference ffs, get it through your head. i'm talking about the fact that gaynor is trying to push this reference as something that ties it to the bioshock universe.
like when valve put that Lost reference in episode 2
but nO Valve good
gone home bad
totally different
or when rockstar put that half life reference in san andreas
they're easter eggs who cares
Normally I like when people are willing to actually criticize Valve, because they get a free ride far too often, but the difference here is that Valve just tossed in easter eggs for people to find, these guys put this in and actually said in a statement that they did it to say their game takes place in the same universe as another, considerably better, franchise that they have no actual ties to, or any right to have ties to.

reference =/= " Gaynor also went on to allude that System Shock 2 is also set within the same universe as Bioshock (and thus Gone Home as well), but there's no direct connection between Gone Home and that classic. Still, Gaynor has managed to subtly tie together disparate stories into one universe"
If I made a game I would have like, 10 different references every map
but that doesn't mean I'll be a pretentious turd and go "It's tied into that universe" I'm not fucking high.
Wait, if we're applying the logic that referencing something else means your game takes place in the same universe as that thing, then how many different games get set in the same universe as Borderlands?
Okay, I looked it up and apparently Borderlands 2 alone referenced 181 works of fiction, including Half-Life, Pokemon, Warhammer 40K, the works of Shakespeare, Minecraft, and Aliens. By the logic these people are applying those things now all exist in the same universe as both Borderlands 2 and each other.
complaining about this and acting like it even vaguely affects bioshock in any way is literally on the same level as that guy who spent three and a half pages in an alien: isolation thread ranting about a transparency effect on one model in a screenshot. it doesnt matter at all and it never will matter so why is this "audacious" in any way shape or form
[editline]24th January[/editline]
at this point i'm pretty certain he's just doing it to annoy you guys cos if you're willing to call THIS "audacious" then i think you'd be willing to get angry over literally anything pertaining to it
I don't really care whether or not some teenager dicking around in a empty house is canon in any game universe. In fact it's kind of baffling that this Gaynor guy thinks I would care.
Gaynor apparently worked on regular Bioshock 2 and Minerva's den AND was the senior level during the development of Infinite. I don't think he's overstepping by making a nod to it in one of his games.

Tons of people put little nods to previous work into other games they've worked on. But other people don't say that these little nods place their new game into the other one's universe.
Good god, I can't believe how badly this whole discussion is going in circles.
"Wow this is pretentious."
"How is a video game reference pretentious? People do it all the time."
"It's not the reference, it's the fact that he's calling attention to it and using it as evidence that the games are actually tied."
"There's nothing wrong with a reference, Half-Life 2: Episode 2 did it. Why is it wrong now?"
"It's not the reference, it's pointing to it as evidence that the game's universes are somehow connected."
"What's wrong with making a reference?"
Etc. etc.

Of course it's not the first time I've seen this. That doesn't make it any less dumb.
They caled the game gone home becus thats we the ppl who made it shuld go

I wish the podcast wasn't so damn long because I'd to hear exactly what he said.
i thought gone home was a cool game, i liked the soundtrack a lot and it has an interview with Corin Tucker who is the coolest
alright
I'm sorry, I can't get past the article writers use of the word 'Funnily'. I loved Smartness, so shoot me...

literally kill yourself pls your opinion is bad and you should feel bad!!!
oh wait its just a small little game with a small little reference. who cares. im pretty sure someone who worked on bioshock 2 has the right to say that it and gone home are tied if he wants to jfc
reference =/= " Gaynor also went on to allude that System Shock 2 is also set within the same universe as Bioshock (and thus Gone Home as well), but there's no direct connection between Gone Home and that classic. His quote:
So in a completely unenforceable way, theoretically, we have caused all of these universes to coexist.
He isn't saying that narratively, the game takes place in the same universe as Bioshock. He's saying that by referencing one game in another you're implying that they take place in the same universe.
It's also worth noting that Gaynor worked on Bioshock 2 so he can reference his own stuff if he wants
i hope irrational agrees and kicks up the nerde hornet nest
Why?
So what's the deal with this game and why is it so awful? It looks like one of those pretentious gameplay-less indie art games, but I've never heard of it before.
So what's the deal with this game and why is it so awful? It looks like one of those pretentious gameplay-less indie art games, but I've never heard of it before.
It's a basic story-driven game set in a house but the game has been amidst a huge shitstorm since its release because the devs are kind of huge pretentious hipsters and the game is worth 20 bucks, which is FAR too much considering how short it is.
And now Steve Gaynor is straight-up saying the game is set in the same universe as Bioshock, which people are trying to legitimize because he worked on a Bioshock 2 DLC. Gearbox worked on Half Life : Opposing Force and that doesn't give them the right to claim Half Life and Borderlands are somehow set in the same universe.
I don't think it's going to ruin bioshock whatsoever. I don't think it'll have any incidence on anything. I just think it's pretentious as fuck and kind of really sad in a way because they have so much difficulties actually legitimizing their game and all of their stupid attempts at doing so only make the game sound more like an overpriced pile of garbage.
my god they dress a certain way

It doesn't help that people who defend the game are usually dipshits like this guy

look at how much people care about this tiny, unimportant, stupid thing

oh yea calling people "huge pretentious hipsters" because they dress like people from Portland is totally not a dipshit thing to do
gosh you certainly pulled the lid off of this controversy.
Why?
Because nerds getting angry over insignificant bullshit is better than cable tv
