They will respect it like they respected Star Wars: http://youtu.be/lg_FoEy8T_A
Would anyone actually say "yeah, were going to fuck over this IP"?
What about when 343 became in charge of Halo?
Probably in the same way they "respected" Rare and how they're going to "respect" Conker.
The only thing I'm hoping to see from Microsoft is for them to port Minecraft from Java to C++, the way it's already been done for console versions. And then get that modding API sorted out.
But... Modding backward compatibility! Changing how minecraft logic work is one thing, changing the language entirely is another thing And yes, the modding API wouldn't be in C++, that is just stupid, it probably in lua or something
I really don't see them implementing the API anytime soon. Honestly though, I wouldn't past MS to make their own version of Steam Workshop and screwing it up all in one go using MC as a basis. The community is already bad enough peddling their shitty mods/texture packs for adfly/donation clicks.
I live through the technic pack great debacle, where in a very big attempt to destroy technic pack users, they make bees explodes, they crash minecraft (!) if it detected it is in the technic pack, they send the minecraft username to a server if they use technic pack Fortunately I have moved on to Minetest and Gmod and KSP, where the modding community is infinitely nicer
M$ really needs to show support for the Minecraft LARP community if they ever want anyone to take them seriously
But... Modding backward compatibility! Changing how minecraft logic work is one thing, changing the language entirely is another thing
Of course there'd be zero compatibility with mods if Minecraft was ported to another language, that's to be expected. However, older versions of Minecraft are accessible via profiles in the Minecraft launcher. Assuming Microsoft retains that feature in the Minecraft launcher, mods would still be usable with the Java version of Minecraft, effectively making backwards compatibility a non-issue as long as you manage your profiles correctly.

I can't believe people went that far as to add in code in their mod that will force the game to crash just because the user has a specific mod/pack installed.
