Time for an upgrade: DirectX 12 won't be available on Windows 7

On the one hand, I expected windows 7 to last at least as long as XP did, but then I remember that XP was an atypical case that spoiled me.

It probably will, they are still going to be fixing security holes and such in Windows 7, they just won't release any updates besides that.
Change isn't inherently bad contrary to what people think. Bad change is bad. (Which unfortunately for most people as well as Microsoft, that's how Windows 8 seemed to most people.) If Windows 10 is actually a good update then I'll have no issues updating when I can.
that growth rate tho
I wonder how win10 handles older games
Been playing Rayman 2 perfectly fine the past few days.

Wait, why are there people on 8 that haven't downloaded the free 8.1 update yet? It makes the whole thing much better.

You're probably underestimating how lazy people can be. Especially if they're the sort who leaves their computer on 24/7 like one of my friends. Even when there's very important Windows security updates he'll be lazy about updating.

My girlfriend would still be using Windows 8 if I hadn't updated it for her. She's mediocre with computers, so I guess it's probably such people :v:
So what are the advantages of DirectX 12 anyway?

When I used Windows 8 I got with an MSDNAA License, I didn't have the option to upgrade to 8.1. Neither in the Windows updates, nor was the update to 8.1 available trough the Windows Store.
I had to actually format my machine and get the new 8.1 ISO off MSDNAA to "update".
I wasn't happy, but I did it.
i don't regret upgrading to 8.1, since i needed a 64bit OS and i had 7 with 32bit
If the games on it will be unoptimized bullshit, I'm not switching, thank you

windows 8.1 broke my laptop for about 2 weeks

Tried, but apparently pointing the Users folder to D: is unsupported configuration that breaks the 8.1 update process.

Windows 8 is actually amazingly well on Steam considering its worldwide performance. 30 percent of the Steam market isn't bad by any standard.

Microsoft should honestly just push it out as an update (Windows 8 is losing support in not so long) - everyone who has "install automatically" will get it, people who didn't want it can choose "don't install automatically".
WHY.
Just leave us alone with Windows 7 for a few more years. It is a perfectly acceptable operating system. I don't like the whole cloud/account integration in windows 8 and 10. I like the traditional format of Windows 7.
7 will become the next XP, no matter what
I will update instantly to Windows 10 once it comes out.
However, this is only cause my school is part of the Dreamspark program and this allows me to get a free copy of it anyway.
DX12 sounds nice but it will probably take some time before it is used extensievely. How much is DX11 really used now anyway

Terrain displacement mapping through DX11 tesselation was pretty spectacular in Metro Last Light. Hoping for more of that kind of stuff.
i hate the tiles on windows 8, hate windows 8 in general but i still use it because it's so much better than windows 7 performance wise holy shit
When DirectX 12 comes out Windows 7 will already be 6 years old. This is perfectly understandable. And this comes from a person who switched from XP just a month ago.
As much as I LOVE Windows 7, I have realized that it is now outdated, and that I have to upgrade.
No point clinging to the past.

So don't use it? It's completely optional.
I never understand people who run older versions of software. I'd understand if Windows 8.1 was bad but it isn't and its perfectly usable (even more so than Windows 7).
I just upgraded to windows 7 lmao

just disable it

Because it does the job and new features of win 8 aren't worth the switching process. Seriously, what do I miss not being on win 8? Nothing.
This isn't surprising. Why would Microsoft want to risk Windows 7 staying the dominant OS rather than Windows 10? Stupid as fuck way to try and get people to switch though. Maybe instead of using underhanded tactics they should try maybe making Windows 10 an OS people would legitimately want to switch to because it's good.
DirectX 10 is unavailable for XP, upgrade to Vista for it. DirectX 11.1 isn't available for Win7, update to Win8 for it. And now DirectX12 isn't available unless you get the new OS, too. Same ol Microsoft
Fucking sick of DirectX anyway, it's really kind of holding video hardware back
So what are the advantages of DirectX 12 anyway?
I don't know the specifics, but essentially it will require half the power, and is extremely optimized with better draw calls and functions that can increase FPS.

It's not DirectX holding the video hardware back, that'll keep progressing until it physically cannot any more. It's DirectX not taking proper advantage of the hardware updates because that would require faster releases and more work on compatibility.
GPUs have been getting faster and using more specialised hardware for a while. DX eventually catches up and optimises algorithms for this new hardware when a new Windows comes out. They need to be careful about adding features to a released DX as it could cause confusion when it doesn't work on slightly older hardware.

improved low level access amongst other general api updates and features
