you dont have to buy multiple phones lol, just use different sim cards (although the newest android made it harder with some weird security feature, you can probably turn it off tho)
its definitely not gonna be a problem for serious cheater here in russia, sim cards are a dime a dozen here
Anything that makes it slightly harder to cheat is a good thing in my book, unless it's ridiculous.
This one is pretty easy.
These days not having a smartphone as a choice is pretty pretentious to be honest
I made that choice because I like to keep my phone for phoning and texting, that's it. Everything I can do on my PC, I do it on it.
I made that choice because I like to keep my phone for phoning and texting, that's it. Everything I can do on my PC, I do it on it.
And what happens if you need to go on the Internet outside your PC?

You can use a smartphone for phoning and texting... but you can do more as well.
I have a cellphone, but no need for a data plan or an actual plan because I'm always within WiFi range either at home, campus, or work.
I also don't make enough money to justify paying for a plan considering everyone I talk to uses some form of free VOIP like skype/discord/teamspeak/etc
Hell, for the odd <10 phone calls we do a year, we only have a VOIP "landline" magic jack, which wouldn't even work in this scenario either.
Just buy/get a PAYG SIM card. Networks literally give them away over here. You don't even need to top it up to receive calls/texts, but at least you have a number.
Good for emergencies as well (Skype specifically says don't use Skype for emergencies)
These days not having a smartphone as a choice is pretty pretentious to be honest
Why?
I haven't needed a smartphone, and it costs extra money. How is that pretentious?

some kids in Africa own android phones and you complain about money?
some kids in Africa own android phones and you complain about money?
if he doesnt see it as a necessary expense, then yeah, i think his complaint is valid. in all honesty, the only thing i ever use my smart phone for is texting and calling. i've been considering going back to a dumb phone myself, to save some cash.
Why?

you probably don't need your PC either, but you have it
if money is the problem it's fine, but if you have some to spend, there's literally no downsides
and best of all you don't get to complain "but what if i don't have a smartphone????????" on news like these, because that's like saying "contact us via email? but I don't have a pc" 20 years ago

A PC and internet connection are pretty much required now. Plus I work in IT, so it's sort of a prerequisite.
And there ARE downsides, I have no real use for it, and it costs money, I've been satisfied with a shitty prepaid phone.
And I do get to complain, why should I shell out $100~ + $40/mo just for prime fucking matchmaking in CS:GO ?
I assume this will lessen the amount of hackers/smurfs? cause people don't usually put phone number on their hacking account.
Why?

It was cheaper for me to get a smart phone than a dumb phone.
some kids in Africa own android phones and you complain about money?
fuck kind of argument is this? "shell out extra money for this thing with features you'll most likely never use, because why not? even poor people has it!!!" I don't own a TV because, well, even if I had one, I'd literally never use it. So should I get one just because? I should probably also get myself a toaster, even though I don't like toast
(I like toast and I own a relatively powerful Android smartphone, tyvm)
Then again I don't really understand why this whole smartphone debate even began, considering this is about linking a phone number, not an app, to the account. A 1990's Ericsson cellphone capable of receiving text messages could be used
And what happens if you need to go on the Internet outside your PC?
I use another PC, or my laptop PC. Amazingly, they can both do a lot more things than a smartphone.
This is a step in the right direction but I think there should be a solution that doesn't rely on smartphones.

Pretty sure you have to do a £10 top up these days to activate the card?
This is a step in the right direction but I think there should be a solution that doesn't rely on smartphones.
it sure is a good thing that this doesnt just rely on smartphones and instead just any basic phone that has a phone number associated eh

Extra expenses imply that you're buying a relatively well priced phone that could double as a pocket computer, which w is somewhat if a requirement for some users, and it marketed as such
Alternatively, there are cheap android powered phones under fifty bucks, the amount of bought an old Sony Ericsson mobile last year

dude, what if he just doesnt want or need those features
why is it so important that he has a smart phone

This wasn't even a reply to glitchvid, didn't even consider their own thoughts in the case, only that to reinforce my own statement for that who don't think I put up a valid argument

no they aren't required... just like a smartphone

that's why I said "news like these", there has been many news articles on which people comment "but what if i dont have a smartphone"
Its fucking apalling to live in 2016, having a computer AND enough money to buy CSGO..... And yet not even having a basic cellphone? I doubt there are atleast 1% out of those playing csgo.
So I am being rated dumb because I do not believe that there are people who have computers and games but not cellphones (not talking about smartphones) these days? Is this 2016 at all?

I also refuse to believe USA does not have Pay-as-You-Go pre-paid sims.
The funny thing is they honestly think this is going to stop people :v:

You can get smartphones for cheap. Does not have to be the latest and greatest. It isn't pretentious imo, unless someone is trying to be hipster or w/e about it.
Companies don't need to hold their selves back because of a few people who don't have smartphones. Even then it does not really matter, as long as you got a phone number.
Won't do much, you can buy prepaid sims for dirt cheap. Just get a ton and offer a "priming" service that will prime all accounts with CSGO so cheaters can use them later.

I think if people started doing this in the masses and valve notice a game-play affecting trend, they might just implement authenticator prime
And really I hope not
