It did everything right what a third person game could do right. Naughty Dog are really great devs and deserve this.
I don't disagree about Last of Us being a great game, but winning almost every award? It's either god-tier or Sony paid up.

Seriously, they haven't made any single bad game. Crash Bandicoot, Jak and Daxter, Uncharted. All good games.

bioshock infinite deserved it more [editline]7th February 2014[/editline] the gameplay was so fresh and original
I liked it but the gameplay didn't hold up to the story imo. Wouldn't have given it GOTY but other awards relating to story and art certainly
The last of us was good and all, but some of those rewards I think GTA V deserves more.

As much as I love The Last of Us I'm not sure it should have won Outstanding Innovation. The game did a lot of things, but pretty much all of them had been done before, perhaps not better, but I don't think Naughty Dog innovated on anything.
Outstanding Innovation in Gaming: The Last of Us

Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction: The Last of Us

Outstanding Achievement in Visual Engineering: The Last of Us
I've not played TLoU, but those seem like really weird awards to give the game.
I've not played TLoU, but those seem like really weird awards to give the game.
It wasn't exactly innovative, but it did have great art direction.
It wasn't exactly innovative, but it did have great art direction.
Even if it did, most of the games on the list had great art direction, Brothers and Bioshock especially.
Even if it did, most of the games on the list had great art direction, Brothers and Bioshock especially.
according to them the last of us has better art direction i dont understand what point you are trying to make
The last of us was good and all, but some of those rewards I think GTA V deserves more.
yeah no
I've not played TLoU, but those seem like really weird awards to give the game.
Outstanding innovation, totally. However, the game was is extremely beautiful and I'm pretty sure its the best looking PS3 game out there right now. If you unlock the extra art, its quite amazing what they came up with. Art direction also has to do with music, and the soundtrack to The Last of Us was phenomenal.
I've not played TLoU, but those seem like really weird awards to give the game.
Visual engineering is definitely a deserved one. The shit they pulled off on the PS3's hardware is incredible. The 90 minute "Making Of" special really opened my eyes to how much effort and power they wrung out of phenomenally limited resources.
It's an amazing game, worthy of those awards, but art direction? I'm not really sure how it ties in with that.
Why did it win so many awards? It's literally just an average third person cover shooter with tons of scripted events.
What are those awards good for anyway except bragging rights
Why did it win so many awards? At any rate, here's what the game does well: - Realistic characterization and storytelling on par with a good film, and also successfully ties into the gameplay. It's also a long narrative, clocking in at a good 14-20 hours depending on the difficulty and how much exploring you do. - Well polished, weighty, and strategic combat that rewards creativity, stealth, and variety. The resulting savagery also ties straight into the plot and fits with what we know of our characters and the world they live in. - A technical achievement for the PS3's hardware, beating even Naughty Dog's previous Uncharted 3. - Strong sound design with equally good voice acting and a haunting soundtrack. - The story and the gameplay treat you intelligently, avoiding the handholding that many other AAA games deal with. - The AI is actually intelligent and challenging, which is a rarity. I know that was all a little gushing, but the game is simply superb in my opinion, and sadly it's only significant fault is that it was made on last-generation hardware. Well, that and the pallet puzzles went on a couple too many times.
Why did it win so many awards? It's literally just an average third person cover shooter with tons of scripted events.
yeah it's totally like every other third person shooter i've played
It's an amazing game, worthy of those awards, but art direction? I'm not really sure how it ties in with that.
The game was flippin' gorgeous, man. "Outstanding innovation" lol
"Outstanding innovation" lol
I think TLOU deserved most of the awards it got, but this is pretty stupid. Especially when one of the runner ups was Papers please. TLOU is great, but it's not innovative in the slightest.
"Outstanding innovation" lol
Yeah, that one I haven't quite figured out. Innovative blend of storytelling...well not so much because they've been doing it with Uncharted for a while. Innovative gameplay...well not so much because it's basically a slower, more deliberate Uncharted with some Resident Evil thrown in for good measure. My feeling on the game is that it took a lot of well worn elements and polished them to a mirror shine (or took them in slightly unconventional directions), not that it was especially original or innovative. [editline]8th February 2014[/editline]
I think it was innovative in the way it created an atmosphere and told a story.
It's an amazing game, worthy of those awards, but art direction? Good art direction is all about making various parts of the game visually pleasing, whether or not it's realistic. You could have the most powerful graphics engine ever, and your game could still look like total ass without good art direction.
