sincity's been out for a month now
must be quite a challenge

PS3's security also got cracked, took it's time though.
I miss the times where demos allowed you to fully test the game but with limited time.
Also the times that the game came complete, not with some fucking expensive DLC to fullfill what was missing.
DLCs is one of the reasons of why i pirate some games.

i thought you couldn't go online with it though

I think you're completely missing mobrocker's point. In the case of SimCity the drm is actually hurting sales because many people such as mobrockers and myself would never consider buying it. And the reason for not buying it is specifically because of their shit DRM. So in this case when the game is cracked the DRM is going to cause much more piracy than if it had none.
i thought you couldn't go online with it though
it's a cat-and-mouse chase, Sony patches holes, Pirates discover new holes, wash, rinse, repeat.

Possibly but you arent taking one thing into account. The portion of pirates who wanted the game and would have pirated it , but instead decided to purchase it because they couldn't just get it for free. Then again pirates are pretty self entitled anyway so that numbers a bit up in the air. That being said the game actually selling is testament to how people say they will boycott something due to DRM and then just cave anyway.

It's possible that the silent pirates outnumber the vocal protestors.
Piracy on PCs due to cost I understand, because £30-£40 games start to add up real quick, 10 at full price and you've got the price of a semi-decent PC or a console.
But on smartphones? You buy a phone worth anywhere from £50 to £500 off-contract, yet you can't spare £0.99-£2 for an app? Especially as there's a 15 minute no-questions-asked refund period, which is usually enough to tell if you'll enjoy the game or not.

You won't find that sort of hypocrisy from me. If I say I won't buy something because I disagree with X business decision then I mean it.

He's not saying you're lying, just that there's people who bought the game because they couldn't pirate it. You can argue how many of those there are, but they certainly exist.

Oh, I know. I was just pointing out that I'm not one of them.
Actually this image comes to mind supporting their argument:

The difference between stealing and pirating is that when you steal something from somebody you take it away from them. If you have 10 apples and I steal one, you now have 9 apples; however, if you have software and I copy it, you still have unlimited copies of that software. Some people then argue that it is a loss of sale, but as the famous idiom goes: you cannot lose what you never had.
I don't think I've ever been sold on a game as fast as that. Is it available for android? Because I think I need to buy it. Now.
There is a flash game like that, probably made by same guy too.

I hate hearing this argument. It is the stupidest and flimsiest argument that pirates use to justify themselves. Piracy is stealing because you're taking something that doesn't belong to you. You didn't pay for it, therefore you don't deserve it. People worked hard for it and deserve to be rewarded for it, while you consume it without rewarding them.
Piracy is stealing.

Theft legally requires the victim to be permanently deprived of the stolen property; you can't be deprived of something that only exists (exempli gratis, a potential sale) hypothetically.

piracy isn't stealing, it's piracy

And piracy is at-best license violation, and nothing more.
With vastly overhyped fines and jail sentences attached.
Even a murderer often get's a less serious sentence.

Yeah well, they don't have those here. They don't even have them (correct me if i'm wrong) outside of the US.
Edit: Somehow the quote fucked up, it's @ n0cturni and his image of the google prepaid cards.
shit like this is really bullshit - even when i was looking for this article, google wanted to autocomplete the game's name with "download" and "ipa".
45 sales and 1114 players, and that's on ios.
and the "pirates wouldn't have bought it anyway" is pretty lame - they will still use developer's resources, like their servers for multiplayer or scoreboards.

Joel’s Opinion
I’ve mentioned in the past that I, too, have sold a game (Cronk) on the App Store. While we don’t have an online leaderboard, I know for a fact that Cronk has been pirated and may be one of the reasons that it’s not a multi-million dollar seller.
Commenters on Bram’s post are telling him to lower his price–he’s only at $1.99! Watch the video above of the game in action and then you can decide if it’s worth your $1.99.
Joel is a cock.

You're still taking something that doesn't belong to you. Doesn't matter if you physically or digitally took it, you're depriving the creator their rewards for making it in the first place.

It's a subset of stealing.

No it's a subset of acquiring counterfeit products.

No it's not.
That's like saying watching a movie in the theater without getting a ticket is stealing. It's not, it's trespassing.
There's a reason we invent words for things that are not similar. The reason is they're not fucking similar.

They are similar because you're taking something that's not yours. Words can have multiple meanings.
But this is all just arguing semantics. It doesn't change the action nor does it justify it.

Of course piracy is wrong but to say that unlawfully acquiring a copy of something for your own gain is as morally wrong as depriving someone of something for your own gain is asinine

ok look if i go steal a car from a car dealership, they have one less car in their inventory
if i illegally download a game, they can still sell as many games as they want
