Skyrim's engine is still loosely based on Gamebryo. Though it wasn't Gamebryo's fault that f3, nv and oblivion were ugly and had lots of glitches.
I wouldn't say loosely based, it's more like minorly tweaked Gamebryo.
Bethesda made Oblivion with their own engine. Then they had to take a IP they just bought and adapt their engine to use guns and write on an IP they weren't that experienced with. Then they teamed up with Obsidian and probably picked up some tips from then as they worked together. Most likely the same when they worked with Arkane Studios Dishonored (I know they published but whose not to say they didn't try to learn something.) Again it was their first Fallout game, we shouldn't hold them completely back just because they have an ugly engine and a shit main story. If it is a new IP, bring it on I say, but if it's a new Fallout game, then let's just give them one more chance and see if they can make something actually interesting. [editline]15th April 2013[/editline] Besides their current engine fucking jumped between 2008 and 2013.
I just fail to understand why anyone would prefer Bethesda make the game over Obsidian at this point. Obsidian showed they know exactly how to do a first-person Fallout game properly. They have a track record of successful games. They even had writers from the original Fallouts working on the game. Bethesda did a poor job with 3. Gameplay wise, it had a lot to be desired, and the story was schlock. Bethesda may be able to nail the feel of the game better this time around, but why take the gamble when Obsidian proved they already know it inside and out? Not to mention Bethesda has been slipping in quality. And if Skyrim's writing is anything to go by, they aren't going to match NV's quality of story and script. Not even fuckin' close. All I am saying is if you want to have a good chance of Fallout 4 being done right, you're gonna wanna place your bets on Obsidian, not Bethesda, because as it stands there's no reason to assume it will be any better than 3 beyond blind optimism.
I know, but obsidian aren't gonna be developing any main fallout games so we'd better just get used to it and hope for the best
I wasn't saying I prefer Bethesda to make the game on their own. I said it was unlikely that they'll let Obsidian help develop for reasons. [editline]15th April 2013[/editline]
I know, but obsidian aren't gonna be developing any main fallout games so we'd better just get used to it and hope for the best
My thoughts exactly.
Three years from now when they announce a new TES game, if it even looks a little bit like it could still be on the Gamebyro engine, I'm not buying the fucking thing.
I will be legitimately pissed if obsidian has no involvement in a fallout 4.
Better be a new fallout with the skyrim engine. Oh god that would be so good.
Three years from now when they announce a new TES game, if it even looks a little bit like it could still be on the Gamebyro engine, I'm not buying the fucking thing.
A game engine isn't going to automatically say what the game will look and play like. Call Of Duty, even the new ones, run on id Tech 3. They look completely different than Quake 3. Team Fortress 2 looks completely different than Half-Life 2. Alien Swarm and Dota 2 play differently than both HL2 and TF2. Many Unreal engine games look and play totally different. It's just how the engine is used.
Three years from now when they announce a new TES game, if it even looks a little bit like it could still be on the Gamebyro engine, I'm not buying the fucking thing.
IDK, the engine's solid enough, it's just that bethesda don't know how to tighten it up and get truly great stuff out of it. IF they moved to another engine the game would probably be less ambitious and even regress a little and they'd probably drop modding.
Cannot wait for bethesdas next virtual landmass with a game tacked on
I know what Bethesda should make next - an open world remake of Terminator: Future Shock, that shit would be awesome.
I know what Bethesda should make next - an open world remake of Terminator: Future Shock, that shit would be awesome.
yes please
Fallout 4 please
I'd rather not have it made by Beth
Better be a new fallout with the skyrim engine. Oh god that would be so good.
I'd really like to see that, but if it is actually like Skyrim i will not be happy. Completely unable to do quests without the giant arrow telling you exactly what to do/where to go, no journal or descriptions of anything, repetitive locations, unkillable characters, lack of interaction with the world, no real choices etc.
I'm not sure the HD texture thing counts. I am disappointed, I was excited for the next Skyrim DLC to be announced. Oh well. It's nothing really worth getting upset over, I say.
It was called a DLC on release, so I guess Todd Howard is stretching those words again. Like when he said there are infinite quests. Technically true, but they're shit.

skynet 2 plz thank you
I want FO4 so bad but I'm terrified of what Bethesda might turn it in to
Jesus, am I the only person that wasn't displeased with fo3? I mean, New Vegas was clearly superior due to having people from interplay working on it, and FO3 clearly had its obvious flaws, but come on, it wasn't shit. And hopefully if they are finally working on FO4, they keep the faction mechanic NV had.
I would love to have Fallout 4 as long as it was only published by Bethesda. I really liked the aesthetic of Fallout 3 and I do dearly love the game but from the gameplay perspective NV was superior.
I'll be the optimist here and say that with Three Dog's voice actor giving a hint of his return to the role, and with E3 2013 in a few months, it's without a doubt that it'll be a new Fallout game. and hopefully it'll be a good one. Because they're not using Bethbryo. Either it'll be an improved creation engine, or something different.
But they are. "Creation Engine" is Todd Howardanese for "Gamebryo with diagonal walking animations."
But they are. "Creation Engine" is Todd Howardanese for "Gamebryo with diagonal walking animations."
I guess he was following the logic of NetImmerse > Gamebryo.
Christ they were only given one chance at Fallout. Cut them some slack.
Hard to trust the guys that snatched up the Fallout franchise for $1,175,000 from BI/Obsidian when Interplay went bankrupt. Not even mentioning how terribly their in-house development team is at constructing a not-terrible story.
Whatever it is, there are just some things that will be assured. 1) It will be buggy as fuck. Bethesda staple. 2) It will have a shitty story since Bethesda decided not to hire writers anymore. 3) It will use Gamebryo and run/look like ass.
4) It will overall be a great game and these things won't significantly detract from it.
4) It will overall be a great game and these things won't significantly detract from it.
If they don't hire a storywriter, no it won't.
4) It will overall be a great game and these things won't significantly detract from it.
except that the story, stability, graphics, and gamebryo were the most glaring issues in fallout 3 and skyrim. new vegas is pretty much the only bethesda-published game i can play, because obsidian wrote and directed that shit. if you deny or downplay the abysmal issues that beth games are plagued with because of todd howard, gamebryo, and beth writers, you're delusional.
I still haven't played all of Skyrim but I've put hundreds of hours into Fallout 3 and New Vegas. I like Skyrim, but it doesn't give me the urge to play it.
oblivion? they hired an outside team to write the game, that's why it didn't have an abortion of a story like skyrim. it was also the first(?) bethesda game to be on the gamebryo engine, which explains why it continues to look and run like ass even in 2013. new vegas? obsidian developed that shit. gameplay was also infinitely better than fo3 because it had better gunplay, more guns and attachments, actual difficulty because of the addition of high level/threat zones instead of terrible scaling in a fucking RPG. only downside of NV was the fact that obsidian had to use gamebryo. these games, moreso nv than oblivion, have had a lot less bethesda influence than the next two games. oblivion is still pretty terrible, but the story was much better than skyrim fallout 3!!! bad story. tried to make the player care about some dumb liam nesson character. fallout doesn't really work with a linear, "personal" story like this. also some dumb shit about water that doesn't make any sense at all. humor isn't the old dark and revealing shit from fo1/2, either. bad gameplay. no high level zones, and you can literally get winterized power armor AND training at level 2 if you have the anchorage dlc. scaling, little to no high level zones. horrible, nonsensical environmental. people somehow lost the ability to clean and rebuild during the 200 years after the war, and decide to live in absolute filth and rubble instead of building new buildings. some of them are so fucking stupid that they decided to build an entire town around an atomic fucking bomb. not only that, but none of the towns make any sense because there's no food sources nearby, as there's no way the supermarket could sustain that many people, and they don't raise their brahmin for food. all other issues are because of bethesda's hilarious incompetence or gamebryo's inherent issues, or were overlooked because trying to say everything i hated about fallout 3 is almost impossible.
Fallout 3 was pretty fantastic, I think Bethesda did a fine job with it.
dude you kind of sound like a super downer i enjoyed all of bethesda's games since like morrowind, skyrim was different but totally fun and i think thats why i play games or something flaws are what make bethesdas games their games. its like the hiss on a smog record or the body shapes in a picasso.
