• Dogmeat, Fallout 4's stalwart canine companion, can't be killed

Atleast we can use him as a minesweeper on four legs now. Just order him to run at those frag mines and watch the explosions.
why are people even worried that there will be forced companions like there's no way bethesda would do that
what if I want to bash him over the head with a baseball bat? all dogs deserve that, even fake ones [editline]17th June 2015[/editline] I don't want to play the game as a dog-owner, they'd have to cap int at 5 for that to make sense (User was permabanned for this post ("Creepy threadshitting + ban history" - postal))
The edge is strong with this one.
what if I want to bash him over the head with a baseball bat? all dogs deserve that, even fake ones
wtf
Even if he can't be killed I bet it's just an "Essential" check box in the GECK/Construction Kit like previous games, so it won't be hard to mod off.
Not exactly that easy lol Take NV for example, the whole game is designed around the fact that every NPC (apart from 1 or 2 exceptions, which are cleverly dealt with) can die. Meanwhile if you'd uncheck the box on say an oblivion quest essential character, the quest just would be uncompleted and basically broken
if its llike franklin's dog in gta v then it'll be liveable because he's important in exactly one main story mission very early on, and its not like you have to lug him around everywhere up to that mission, you can lock him in wherever he lives and he'll just appear when he has to if he's a permanent companion or vital towards the end of the story, then it'll be very dumb.

I don't really have a problem with this as long as you aren't forced to have him follow you around.
Build him a doghouse and have him stay there don't need to be rude and lock him in a warehouse :c
oh yeah that seems like a better idea
"Dogmeat is unconscious"
Most likely to save the "average" first person Fallout player the few seconds it would take to make him unkillable via the console. I also admit that I've sent Dogmeat in Fallout 3 to look for stuff and he'd never return. No death/unconscious message, no nothing. I guess he just took my putting faith in him to find something as a sign to get the hell away from me. That or he knew somehow that I am moreso a cat person(but mind you I like dogs as well).
Confirmed that there will be multiple companions and that you do not need to have a companion with you. Companions can go unconscious in combat however
Good. I'm betting he'll have the same problem as his FO3 and FNV cousins. Hyper-aggressive AI combined with melee-only body and not-all-that-durable-a-build* would see him dying entirely at random to mobs that the player was unaware of and were unaware of the player entirely too often. That's....not fun. No. Shut up. I don't care what you're about to type up as a counter argument. It isn't fun to be wandering around with your wasteland mutt behind you only for said wasteland mutt to randomly wander off without you even knowing and go start nibbling on a Deathclaw's shins. I've lost count of how many times I've been told that shithead was unconcious when I had no idea a threat was even nearby.
what would a dog even have thats worth fighting him for
the answer lies in Dogmeat's name
Maybe they will explain through a quest why Dogmeat is immortal.
Maybe they will explain through a quest why Dogmeat is immortal.
He got an extra nice taste of FEV? The game's plot revolves around using his DNA to create a Fountain of Youth?
Maybe they will explain through a quest why Dogmeat is immortal.
He has 10 Luck.
ffs fallout is becoming even more casual than call of duty even in ghosts the exact same german shepard call of duty dog dies
ffs fallout is becoming even more casual than call of duty even in ghosts the exact same german shepard call of duty dog dies
??? This is literally just Todd saying Dogmeat (and presumably the others) works like literally every companion in New Vegas worked.
ffs fallout is becoming even more casual than call of duty even in ghosts the exact same german shepard call of duty dog dies
lol you have no idea what you're talking about do you?
??? This is literally just Todd saying Dogmeat (and presumably the others) works like literally every companion in New Vegas worked.
I wasn't being serious. [editline]18th June 2015[/editline] I wasn't even using periods or capitals to get proper mad like I usually do. :v:
sure its true, fallout is getting more casual/streamlined, but in the 2d fallouts, you could be ambushed by a pack of 9 mole rats right after leaving the first area and be murderized with no chance to run, there was some bullshit to the old games
While I agree there was alot of issues with the old Fallouts (mostly RNG related), I don't think there is anything wrong with unforgivingness and forcing the player to think ahead of situations. If you do know, that the area you are about to visit is too dangerous for your companion, you should leave him back or risk getting him permanently killed, instead of the game magically saving him. I really do hope hardcore mode will make a return in FO4 for exactly that.
Oh fuck, it's going to be like Skyrim again, isn't it? Can't kill anyone "important" to the history.
but theres basically no point of taking a companion with you if that is the case either you go to an area thats easy as shit and taking a companion is redundant or an area is too hard and your companion dies in 1 shot making you quickload
What is wrong with going into an area alone? In my opinion the purpose of companions is to create atmosphere and temporarily lift the feeling of "wandering alone", less about getting you through the whole game. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense, that a companion is basically invincible against all dangers you face in the wasteland, and it takes away alot of the immersion aspect, just because it had to be made easier for broader audiences to play with companions.
So, hang on, the dog we saw during the gameplay thing is actually a unique companion and not just some random dog roaming around? That makes it less cool imo.
So, hang on, the dog we saw during the gameplay thing is actually a unique companion and not just some random dog roaming around? That makes it less cool imo.
It doesn't really make any difference. You probably come across it randomly and it's not already yours at the start of the game, you can just have it as a companion if you want. Besides, it's been a unique companion in the other games, why would you expect that to suddenly change?
I'm okay with this. I hope that enemies still target me primarily though. Companion gameplay doesn't feel as good when they practically become the tank in fights and I just sit back and do the damage. Even more so if they're invulnerable now.
So, hang on, the dog we saw during the gameplay thing is actually a unique companion and not just some random dog roaming around? That makes it less cool imo.
While it'd be neat to have a pack of dogs, just finding a dog in a world full of dogs is kinda meh if you only want one, it makes them feel less unique.
So, hang on, the dog we saw during the gameplay thing is actually a unique companion and not just some random dog roaming around? That makes it less cool imo.
It'd be pretty dumb if finding perfectly passive dogs in the wasteland was a common occurrence.
