Like I said before, it's convenience and simplicity. Just because it looks simple to you doesn't mean it's simple to most others.
http://store.steampowered.com/universe/machines there are prebuilt machines if you really have to go down the road. You don't HAVE to build your pc. Steam machines are just PC's that are simpler, you could buy this, slap windows 10 on it, or whatever you want, and it'd be easy. the thing is too, is that they aren't that much more expensive than a console, but you can get the really high end builds of you want. It's self-budgeting. Without exclusives, there REALLY isn't much market for consoles.

whats the point, just cut out the xbone and use an HDMI cable for your PC and TV
whats the point, just cut out the xbone and use an HDMI cable for your PC and TV
If you have the PC in one room, and the XB1 meant for exclusives in the living room? And not everyone wants to have their PC in their livingroom, and not everyone wants a long HDMI cable to run from one room to another. There's a reason why the previously mentioned 50 dollar Streambox exists, you know
A 450 dollar Steam machine won't perform as well as an XB1 or PS4
Maybe today it won't. But XBone and PS4 hardware are already outclassed by high end hardware. In a few years, that high end hardware will be common and a 400 dollars Steam Machine will be destroying these two consoles.

No shit? Did you know that the 400 dollar 2019 PS5 will most likely outperform a current 400 dollar PS4?
