Rhianna Pratchett won't be returning to pen Mirror's Edge reboot

I genuinely enjoyed the me1 story :-$

Oh yeah, and it still blows me away that Mirror's Edge was done on the king of brown and bloom: Unreal Engine 3.
That's because pretty much nothing of the lightning system remained in the game. The whole thing was proprietary.

Even with default lighting solution UE3 is not brown and bloom unless you make it like that.
Are you all sure it's a reboot? The official website on google still heavily implies a prequel.
I hadn't heard about Sarkeesian getting hired for the new game though, that's news to me. I hate to be that guy, but I seriously hope she has a very limited influence over the game's design decisions. Mirror's Edge's problems all had nothing to do with the core gameplay. They were all in the map design and story.
This. IIRC she gave a talk at DICE once, but I've never heard anything about her being put in charge of ME2's gameplay.

She hasn't. Considering the guy who posted that is someone who uses 'feminist' as a pejorative term I wouldn't pay it much attention.
I completely forgot Rhianna Pratchett wrote Mirror's Edge - then again I forgot pretty much everything about that game's story the moment I put it down so meh
Still a bit worried that the only trailer we've seen for Mirror's Edge 2 was primarily combat-based. Of course it could just be to grab people's attention, but it doesn't bode well for the future I feel.
After Hitman Absolution I hope everyone is wary of the "ignore the trailers, the game will be totally different!" argument
It's been said it was a prequel back when rumors of the game's existence began to surface but more recently everyone has called it a reboot.
Which absolutely sucks.
The story wasn't much but it's mainly the universe of it that was interesting. It's possible for all of that to go away if this really is a reboot.

I won't be surprised if they turn this into another generic FPS.
The environment, washed out everything and way things ran just reminded me of Fahrenheit 451, part of me was waiting for her packages to be books.
Huh. So that's why Faith was always quiet during the levels.
Still, I wonder why they would cut out her level dialogue.

Yeah, she wasn't. She gave a talk at DICE about sexism in games or something, and brought up ME1's controls as an offhand comment but people took it completely out of context. Seriously, google "anita sarkesian mirror's edge" and you'll find dozens of pages of angry guys getting mad at her EVIL AGENDA!111!"
So they put an idiot in charge of gameplay (a hypocrite at that - a feminist who thinks the controls are too hard for girls) and then the writer isn't coming back? This could really work as a sequel. Things are obviously more futuristic - you could be Faith's daughter in a world where things got worse after the events of the first.
Them ditching everything that made the original great shows how shitty this will most likely be.
Just think for a second: Why would they put somebody who has absolutely ZERO experience in game development be in charge of gameplay after giving a short presentation? Stop believing everything you read on r/gaming and /v/.
After Hitman Absolution I hope everyone is wary of the "ignore the trailers, the game will be totally different!" argument
Except Absolution was a great example of why you should ignore trailers. Except for a couple of setpieces, the game really let you play how you wanted.
What the fuck is it with the sudden fad of reboots?
If you can't come up with a decent continuum to the original, don't bother at all and try and come up with something different entirely.

Except from the restrictive, linear level design which only gave way occasionally, inability to choose which weapons you want to use, the useless disguise system and the annoying scoring system?
Except from the restrictive, linear level design which only gave way occasionally, inability to choose which weapons you want to use, the useless disguise system and the annoying scoring system?
Absolution was a ton more focused on action and quickly getting rid of people instead of infiltration and strategy like it was in older games. It was a good game but I wish it would've been more blood money style with open levels where you can choose how you do stuff instead of going through corridors with doors that shut behind you. I hope new ME does not stray from the original too much. I want more and better freerunning. Not particularly excited about combat, at least not gun combat. Now on the other hand using environment to outsmart and take down enemies would be nice.

To be fair the whole BDSM nuns trailer painted a picture of the game that wasn't really close ot reality, and the nuns themselves afaik only show up for 1 mission and are just normal targets. On the other hand it was strange how many people stood up and said 'well this is totally unrepresentative of the game obv even though the game isn't even out yet and these are the only evidence of what the game will actually be like'

When was it said that ME2 would be a reboot? Everything I heard about it said it was a prequel.
then why not leave "mirrors edge" alone as it was? why not write mirrors edge 2? you can write in more characters.
why does it NEED to be a reboot? what is the purpose?
The original was a cult hit, it wasn't popular in the mainstream. If they made the sequel they were going to originally (it was supposed to be a trilogy), it would probably sell even less due to being a sequel to a game that sold a mediocre amount of copies.
Rebooting gives them a chance to keep what made the game great, while fixing what was wrong, marketing it bigger, and having a safety net of players that loved the original, meaning they can afford to make it bigger.
I rewatched the trailer for ME2 and the city, guards do look a bit more futuristic. I remember them saying it's a prequel. She gets her tattoos in the video which suggests a prequel but we've seen many times games change their stories during development.
Truth is the story in the first was very flat and I don't care about it in this next game. As long as it isn't filled with cutscenes. My wishes are they put most of their work into improving the parkour gameplay and don't focus too much on combat.
It's not a reboot if there's only one game. If Mirror's Edge was a series and this happened, then yes, this would be a reboot; however, it is not.
Hopefully ME2's story will be better than the absolute crock of shit ME1 was.

While people exaggerated that to some extreme dumb extents, I still think she has quite a nerve to state what's basically subjective as a fact. Especially since she, as you say, has no game-dev experience and she is in fact talking to developer veterans. If she turns out to have a degree in cognitive psychology I retract this statement though since that would regard UI and controls in games.

The amount of released games/movies has nothing to do with reboots. You can easily re-imagine a single game that isn't a series.
I almost wish ME never had any dialogue. Just the world and exploration to tell the story. Kind of Half Life 2 without cutscenes. All the cutscenes in ME ruined it along with the forced in-game cutscenes.
I really just wish the world would come back in a game with no combat.
They need to create some openworld maps or levels that have multiple paths. The original Mirrors Edge was unique but overall it wasn't really a great game, played through it and never touched it again.
Lara Croft was always a bland character. Only looks and that was it, also wielding two pistols and raiding some shit. It's not that great either.
Its not that hard to make mirrors edge 2 into a great game.
- Dropping the chapter systems, in favor of a more open-world/connected experience.
- Open up the levels even more
- Change the pace of combat and the way the 'combat' scenes are woven into the game.
If they fix all of that they are pretty much there.
Not really, because the writing and the characters in the original were terrible. I mean, just atrociously bad. The game had a cool concept and unique gameplay mechanics, and was generally pretty fun, but the writing and voice acting were among the worst I've ever seen from a major title.
I thought the story was pretty avg, the character development was poor, and i never noticed anything wrong with the voice-acting. If anything the worst part about the story was the cut-scene's a large amount of it was told in.
Debatable. She turned one of the strongest female protagonists in video gaming history who men and women alike feared and revered into a weak-willed gap-year student who nearly gets raped like 50 times over the course of the game, and breaks down into tears twice, all the while talking about how she "hates tombs"
it was an origin story?
Honestly, as long as this doesn't become CoD with light parkour elements, and what ever character they decide to give Faith isn't complete shit, it could turn out alright.
But who am I kidding, this is EA we're talking about it.

She's a fucking 22 year old college student. Also there isn't a single rape scene in the game, there's one scene idiots took out of context where she can get stabbed to death.
I was disappointed when I found out that they found a way to make custom levels for ME1... only to have nobody do it.
