Notch refuses to help certify Minecraft for Windows 8
I have used it. I have the RTM installed on my laptop, silly.
Yup. It's one of the things they were aiming for when designing Windows 8, to be less resource intensive.
Less resource intensive isn't exactly a selling point if people can't use the damn thing. I don't care what you guys say, I find it to be a disaster and will be avoiding it completely.

But you can use it, just as easy as Windows 7. And of course it's a selling point?

It doesn't say in that article certification requires an app being on the Windows store, or that they said he needed to do it.

That's your opinion.
its about sending a message its not about making money. he supports an open pc platform, and this is his protest for it.
Good on him. Windows 8 seems like Microsoft's attempt to shove an appstore down people's throat built into the OS. Remember GFWL guys? how well that turned out?
There's a big difference between a piece of software that locks your games away from you and an appstore program that you can just unpin from Start screen and forget all about if you don't feel like utilizing it.

I never claimed it said that either.
My only issue with Windows 8 is that it's designed for tablets but being released for general PC use. So its interface is completely unsuitable for the majority of PC users. I like what they tried to do with it, but maybe they'll learn from this and make Windows 9 better.
oh look it's this post that shows up on every thread that's barely win8-related and derails the thread for a page or two while everyone talks about how they rely exclusively on the old start menu or haven't touched the start menu in three years, I don't like these big buttons it's just like windows phone and the xbox dashboard, apps are dumb and slow, etcetera etcetera
I never claimed it said that either.
You literally just replied that link to my post that said "Please show me where you found out that Microsoft wanted to get Minecraft certified just to put it in the store." Do you have Alzheimers?
2 bad things in this article hate eachother.
Notch is a lazy and pretty standard quality developer that got lucky.
Windows 8, ignoring whatever underlying technology improvements that where made, promises to be the most awkward and likely most time consuming OS interface the world has ever seen. I mean, it has no start menu, Aero theme is dead, functionality split between Metro menu and the desktop, the list goes on. I'm sure I could eventually find workarounds to half the annoyances in Windows 8. It's just the fact that Microsoft feels the need to make a new OS because they had to add a few things. A metro menu does not justify a new OS.
It just so happens I hate windows 8 more than I do Notch. Probably his swedish charm.
Notch does all this shit and just comes off as a big baby
lole when was the last time notch even touched minecraft, Jeb and the rest of Mojang have been doing all the work lately
quitting development of minecraft is the best decision notch has made for minecraft

I never said a requirement of certification was to publish your app in the win8 store. Can you read?
So in windows 8, how do you get to the "run" box thingy without the start menu?
Notch is right to refuse it, but he sounds ridiculously stupid in his statement.
At least Gabe Newell was better spoken in his criticism of Windows 8.
I do not really agree with either of them though. Windows 8 is not the end of the world.
He's missing out on potential sales tbh
He's already made billions in the first few weeks of Minecraft gaining monstrous publicity. I doubt not certifiying it for Win8 is going to put a dent in his vacation schedule.

Oh look another dink who has to rip on someone for speaking his opinion after the entire discussion on something even though they aren't forcing it down anyone's throats or being rude in any fashion. Because that's what we need around here right?
Just let me voice my opinion and be off with it. No need to be a dink and try to start something. Completely unnecessary.
So in windows 8, how do you get to the "run" box thingy without the start menu?
Click the corner and type run, winkey + r, winkey + type run.

Saying "I don't care" is not really how you voice your opinion. It doesn't help to spew out false statements either.
So in windows 8, how do you get to the "run" box thingy without the start menu?
Open the Start screen (Win-key or corner-click) and start typing. It's physically impossible for it to be more accessible.

notch didn't make billions lol
Open the Start screen (Win-key or corner-click) and start typing. It's physically impossible for it to be more accessible.
Alternatively, press Win+R.
AUTOMERGE
Open the Start screen (Win-key or corner-click) and start typing. It's physically impossible for it to be more accessible.
It could read your mind and open the app you're looking for automatically.
So in windows 8, how do you get to the "run" box thingy without the start menu?
Win + r
Like in Win7 and XP.
read the fucking article and do some googling: certification is not an app store or even close
it's just a thing that makes your program trusted, so that that one dialog box with the "this program may harm your computer" doesn't come up
jesus christ

The problem isn't that you're voicing your opinion, it's that this thread has literally nothing to do with Windows 8's UI and therefore isn't the place for you to voice your opinion in
You're all missing the fact that he isn't saying he won't make Minecraft exclusive to Windows 7 or any bullcrap like that, he's saying he doesn't want to put it on the store/certify it for W8 officially.

not wanting to certify it for windows 8 is fucking stupid. it has nothing to do with the store
not wanting to certify it for windows 8 is fucking stupid. it has nothing to do with the store
Or maybe he doesn't support Windows 8 and thus sees no reason to put effort towards their guidelines?
Obviously it won't hurt Minecraft on Win8, but it does hurt Win8 when big names start advising against it. Whether or not the matter is trivial, it still stirs shit up.
The Windows 8 hate bandwagon is hilarious, everyone I know that has used it for longer than 30 minutes has actually liked it. I've yet to see anyone give me one good example that the old start menu did better/quicker than what the Windows 8 start screen does.
The Metro apps are made with touch screens in mind and don't work as well with the mouse and keyboard, this is true. Do you have to use any of the Metro apps? Nope. The only thing you will generally need the start screen for is launching programs, which it does just as well as the start menu did. There are plenty of improvements on the desktop environment side too, which is the main reason I got Windows 8.
I understand if people say Windows 8 doesn't have enough new features to make it a worthy upgrade from Windows 7, but calling it a disaster or terrible is just ignorant.
Both Notch and Gabe are criticizing the app store part of it since it could potentially make Windows a more closed platform than what it is now, I don't think it's really going to happen though. They don't even sell any desktop apps there.
Why does everybody hate Notch again? There's literally no reason

It does and given the low price point for upgrading, there's literally no point in not upgrading seeing how much better it is.
Why does everybody hate Notch again? There's literally no reason
Plenty of reasons.
Try out the demo. Trust me, it is not designed with Desktop in mind. It's annoying and very difficult to find things that would normally take me just a couple of seconds. In metro you have to use keyboard shortcuts and open up 2 or 3 apps to get to where you want to go. It's not optimized for anything. It truly is catastrophic.
You are completley talking out of your ass.
Windows 8 is just like Windows 7 but the start menu has become a fullscreen application instead. Your control panel and shit is just thrown into the right side of your screen when you press your mouse to the right side of the screen. The process of getting through anything is still the same. Want search for and open a program? Hit the Windows key or click on the lower left corner, and type like you would when you open the start menu.
I have Win8 as my primary OS and I can honestly say that you are just sticking into minimalistic flaws in the OS.
Yeah, you can't just type "network connections" to the search box and open up your network adapter settings, but that's like 2 or 3 extra clicks to get there without it.
Win8 is cool and you really don't even need to use the metro interface that much. I only use it as a start menu for easy access to my commonly used programs, just like in Win7.
What? People don't right click on the network icon on the toolbar to get to the network connections window? Easiest and fastest way.
I personally use the start menu extremely often, but it's not a breaking point for me
Same here, it's frustrating and makes me a bit angry that they can't leave in both solution and then get rid of the one that statistically gets used the least in the next edition.
The reason they changed the Start Menu into Start Screen was that people used the Start Menu less and less and only used it for searching up a program, so they came up with a new idea for it. But it's retarded that they change it completely because there is no telling if people will use the start screen and prefer it over the start menu for the same task without having both. They can't do a statistical research on what solution works the best for the general consumer.
So in windows 8, how do you get to the "run" box thingy without the start menu?
By going to the Start Menu, by hitting the Windows key or clicking in the lower left corner where the start menu button used to be. yes, that's right, click the same place and you get to the same thing, just that's it (retardedly so) fullscreen.

That's the reason I rated the OP dumb. Notch is a stupid dipshit along with Gabe who just hate on Windows 8 without giving any proper reasons, and spewing assumptions based on the word "shop".
