them boot times i had 8 on my SSD
Must be fast as shit. Maybe even faster than ubuntu.
apparently hating windows 8 is the really cool new video game dev trend
What exactly was Gabe's argument? All I recall was him just calling it a catastrophe and that people will leave the market without explaining why.
Gabe viewed the MS Store as a stab at making Windows a more locked down OS, similar to what Apple has done through AppStore. Gabe (as well as most users I imagine) don't want to see the Store becoming a prominent method of certifying and distributing Windows software because it'd give Microsoft too much control, like AppStore has given Apple the ability to essentially be the police, judge and jury when it comes to determining what content that be installed on IPhones and what cannot.
The fact that it's been proven to be faster than the old start menu time and time again should be enough to change people's minds, but ignorance has no bounds.
Aren't most people put off by the fact that it's fullscreen? If they had a version of it that didn't take up all that space, I'm sure people wouldn't mind.
What exactly was Gabe's argument? All I recall was him just calling it a catastrophe and that people will leave the market without explaining why.
Pretty much the same Notch had from what I remember. They think that the built in app store and xbox live integration will make Windows a closed platform, which would hurt Steam sales. Neither of them said Windows 8 is bad for the end user in any way, but people just tend to read the headlines instead of the actual article.
Must be fast as shit. Maybe even faster than ubuntu.
That comparison is so out of touch it's incredible.
Aren't most people put off by the fact that it's fullscreen? If they had a version of it that didn't take up all that space, I'm sure people wouldn't mind.
I don't see why, all it being fullscreen does is make it do the same thing but faster.
By the way guys, I just discovered this neat little menu when right-clicking the lower-left screen corner That's everything you'd ever want from a 'Start'-function. Now you never have to use Metro -or the right/left sidebars- again.
Personally I think he made the right move. Microsoft needs to be made aware of the fact that they can't get away with making shit operating systems. Although, Notch generally is a giant baby man... [editline]Edited:[/editline] I regret nothing
Does Windows 8 have a way to revert to classic style menus? So I don't have to deal with Metro?
Does Windows 8 have a way to revert to classic style menus? So I don't have to deal with Metro?
Not out-of-the-box, no. Third-party developers has been working pretty hard for that however, so you'll most certainly find a non-official solution for that.
He followed up saying he'd "rather have minecraft not run on win 8 at all than to play along," and hoping that it will keep some users from switching to Windows 8.
What the hell?
Not out-of-the-box, no. Third-party developers has been working pretty hard for that however, so you'll most certainly find a non-official solution for that.
So really I guess the only problem I have with Windows 8 is fixed.
Ahaha wow, he sounds like a petulant child
If Gabe had said it you'd be eating it up In fact - oh wait, that even happened.
"No, thank you" would have been understandable. "Stop ruining PC gaming!" is, like I've said, childish
You have no idea what "closed platform" means, do you. His response is exactly the same as mine is from a dev standpoint, which is "fuck you". I'm gonna have to start vetting cert for AT LEAST 6 weeks on a hot fix and then pay a 40K royalty for updating my own software because M$ arbitrarily fucking says so? Fuck that and fuck you.
If Gabe had said it you'd be eating it up In fact - oh wait, that even happened.
Gabe sent a childish email to Microsoft and said that he'd rather not have Steam run on Windows 8?
You have no idea what "closed platoform" means, do you. His response is exactly the same as mine is from a dev standpoint, which is "fuck you". Fuck that and fuck you.
Except that you don't have to do that at all. Just don't put it on the store, that's all.
Also the argument of "WITH THE NEW START MENU I CAN'T SEARCH FOR FILES" it works identical to win7's, except you don't click a search box.
You don't click a search box on win7 too?
Except that you don't have to do that at all. Just don't put it on the store, that's all.
You're operating under the assumption this the end or standard of Microsoft's involvement in platform and content control, when it is in fact the beginning, and if they are allowed to start abitrating content and software economically, there will be more unfavorable changes in what has already been very clearly established as an open platform and resource. If you don't think MS will attempt to further monopolize and monetize this, you clearly haven't keeping up on events over the last twenty years or aren't in the interactive entertainment business; because they aren't even bothering to hide how brazen and proprietary their plans are.
Personally I think he made the right move. Windows 8 needs to be ignored more so that Microsoft can finally get the idea that they can't get away with making shit "User Friendly" operating systems.
Yeah man Lets go back to MSDOS.
You're operating under the assumption this the end or standard of Microsoft's involvement in platform and content control, when it is in fact the beginning, and if they are allowed to start abitrating content and software economically, there will be more unfavorable changes in what has already been very clearly established as an open platform and resource. Don't be so paranoid.
If Gabe had said it you'd be eating it up In fact - oh wait, that even happened.
no actually i remember specifically saying that i disagreed with gabe on that matter
As stated, I work in the industry, and their plans aren't exactly secret. Paranoia has nothing to do with it.
As stated. I work in the industry, and their plans aren't exactly secret. Paranoia has nothing to do with it.
The majority of people in the industry aren't terrified of big bad Microsoft, and if you think they are, you need to talk to more people who work in it. Anybody who thinks that there is any evidence at this stage that MS is trying to limit what people do is paranoid. There is literally no reason to believe that.

Fuck that and fuck you.
The last time I checked the Windows 8 dev license was free (could have changed though). If anything the store makes it easier for you to make money, just like Google play and the Apple app store. Also it's only for metro apps, they don't even sell desktop apps.
lol what do you actually think MS will bankrupt themselves over software distribution?
It has nothing to do with general software markets and everything to do with MS inserting themselves into an area they don't need to be in, in any way, shape, or form as their very own proprietary platform and previous content distribution system has shown in spades.
It has nothing to do with general software markets and everything to do with MS inserting themselves into an area they don't need to be in, in any way, shape, or form as their very own proprietary platform and previous content distribution system has shown in spades.
MS trying new grounds, HOW DARE THEY!
Windows 8 + Start 8= Super fast windows 7. It takes 28 seconds to boot up windows 7 for me. It takes 9 seconds to boot up windows 8.
It has nothing to do with general software markets and everything to do with MS inserting themselves into an area they don't need to be in, in any way, shape, or form as their very own proprietary platform and previous content distribution system has shown in spades.
Why does MS not have a right to enter the software distribution industry? Why aren't you mad at Valve for "trying to take over the gaming industry." What MS are doing with the store and what Valve are doing with Steam is literally no different. They're both ways to obtain programs/games with other alternatives. Just that MS's version is built into their OS and is only for tiny apps instead of large ones like Steam is for.
