What would be better is an "into the past" expansion, where if you play as one family long enough you can go back in time to interact with family members you've played previously.
I never got into the sims games.. I never saw what was so great about them..
I don't think you should play games if you feel "incomplete" when you don't own optional content.
If you used to play the Sims 2 with all the expansions and then played the Sims 3 on release it felt incomplete. I'm willing to bet the situation will be the same with TS4. I don't expect TS4 to have all the previous content fro TS3 and its expansions, but at least some of the mechanics from the past expansions should be in the base game imo.
I'm sure this is why the Sims games run like crap too: all these mechanics aren't included in the game but are added afterwards, and any combination of the expansions has to work... This can't possibly be as well optimised as if they were in the game to begin with.
That's also why I stopped caring about the Sims. On release, TS3 was inferior to TS2 if you had the TS2 expansions, and I didn't want to wait years and spend hundreds to finally get the same experience.
Get the base game and Ambitions and you've got a great game. Add the good expansions like World Adventures and even Pets and it's even better.
