Why is a profitable game a 'huge failure'?
Pretty much everything about it bombed.

I have heard that they've managed to break even, and everything now is profit, but that was a single post on /v/.
Even if they are now making money, the average server has 350 people online, you cannot seriously be calling it a success worth of the title of most "expensive video game ever to produce".
Yes, and I said Halo 2/3. Halo 2 sold stupidly well, Halo 3 was a flagship game for the 360. To say that those didn't make the big publishers think "you know what, they made money from it, we could too!" if a little daft.
The point is, a huge failure, such as TOR, will prevent big names from copying it. A huge success will make them want to. Let's say that TOR made loads of cash, kill WoW and created a monopoly on the MMO market. What would happen? Rather than copying WoW, every new MMO would copy TOR (which is basically a WoW clone itself) and nothing would change, if anything did change, it would be that the big boys would push ridiculous amount of money into MMOs, rather than the smaller studios we've seen doing it so far.
It's not like "small companies" are great at making MMO's either. Rift and TERA both had noticeably smaller success then SWTOR, with the former being nearly an exact clone of WoW and the latter just being a poorly done port of a Korean game.
Even if they did start copying SWTOR, and do copy WoW as most MMO's tend to do, you are blaming success. Why not blame the companies that lack originality and just want to cash in a quick buck? Why are games punished in your eyes for just being popular?

Don't bother. You will get dumb/disagree spammed and no one will ever reply to you because they don't refer to failure in the objective sense of critical or financial, but instead their own opinions. They didn't like the game, ergo the game was a failure.
Not bothering to include the fact that we have well documented sources from EA itself during quarter financial announcements showing it's doing pretty damn well for a brand new MMO, and is currently second place behind WoW.
Remember, these are the boards that said WoW was dying when it went down to a paltry 10.2 million subscribers.

They said it was making them profit 2 weeks ago during an earnings call.
Now to sit back and watch people call me a Biodrone or bitch about me defending a game I don't even play because I am capable of doing even the smallest amount of research before I type shit.
Based on this and the layoffs, I don't know if I want to keep playing this game
The only part about TOR that's a failure really is their ability to keep a dedicated player community.
The typical person who plays this game just does their storyline and then quits rather than keep playing it like it's their virtual life like MMO developers want them to do.

It turned a profit. Hence all that money that they spent to make it has been made back and some more.
You seem to be confusing your subjective opinion on the game and market success.

I am blaming the companies; the thing is that it is an observable trend, game that is easy to replicate does well, it is copied by people looking to make a quick buck. Minecraft clones are obvious examples.

And despite the profit, they've still laid off lots of employees.
Look, I (obviously) don't play the game, I'm not even interested in it. I don't play any games which are in direct competition with TOR either. The only reason I came into this thread was to say that maybe companies that would be willing to spend millions on a substandard MMO might think twice before doing so, seeing that EA/Bioware aren't exactly doing too well these days.
Don't bother responding to this, we've all used up all our arguments and frankly, I'm fed up of seeing this thread every time I click on the News Node.

The Layoffs would have happened regardless.
