And this is why people like garry will succeed.
Garry I know how to do a pixel-art grid-like thingy using LOVE2D and a third-party lib, will you hire me? :v:
I feel like asking Garry how to get into the game industry is like asking an band who self-publishes all their stuff how to get into the music industry. Sure, Garry's Mod and Rust have sold a shitton but I've never thought of Garry as "in the industry".
That's not even the best part.
The people we want to hire should be so awesome at their job they'll make their own game and not work here anyway
Garry what the heck hire me already
Generally speaking if everyone could put their exact idea on the market without the hassle of actually learning to code/countless hours of trial and error everyone would already be rich. It takes effort to make your vision reality and if your vision is clear enough you should never stop before reaching it.
And this is why people like garry will succeed.
As if he isn't successful already.
As if he isn't successful already.
People LIKE Garry. It is obvious Garry is successful.
I wonder how does one come from being a comercial programmer to a game programmer.
I wonder how does one come from being a comercial programmer to a game programmer.
I'd love to know. I've worked commercially for 3 years doing data-driven WPF and MVC4 development using C#, and I want to take a step into game development. It'd be a dream come true if I could work for Facepunch but my portfolio is definitely lacking, although I'm confident in my abilities. I have joined the yearly game development jam at Something Awful, and I toxxed that I'd deliver a product, so here goes nothing, I suppose! (it's going to be shit) [editline]30th June 2014[/editline] I'm also enrolled in a game development elective course at my university this next semester so that will be fun and productive. It'll cover modelling and texturing on top of programming, which will be fun considering my minor is digital design.
pretty ironic that google's browser can't render google's fonts..
Its fixed depending on what channel you're in.
http://www.facepunchstudios.com/2014/06/28/what-we-look-for/
Out of curiosity, whats your interview/hiring process like?
Out of curiosity, whats your interview/hiring process like?
People apply. If they look promising we give them a test. If that works on they become permanent.

That's good for them

If I recall correctly he originally started off working on some shitty dating site.
Surely this is something garry would actually be able to answer. If I recall correctly he originally started off working on some shitty dating site.
Well the problem that I have personally is that I'm already working, which means I'm already using my time to improve on what I use the skills I use on my work. Since there's no market around here, I'd have to work home office or move to a different country. And even then, I heard that most big studios suck the life out of devs.

I only wish there was incentive to hire a guy who draws cartoons on ms paint. In any industry, really.
Do stuff in your spare time.
Do you have any advice about getting started with Unity? The tutorials on their website are cool and all but I just started a project and I don't know what the fuck is going on. [editline]30th June 2014[/editline] OK maybe i'm just spoiled by Intellisense.
I've been thinking of applying but I'm too busy working on my own shit so fuck you gayry
Exactly my thoughts. Grades don't mean shit if you can't do the job at hand right.
Indeed. This why I tell people sometimes that going to college doesn't mean shit anymore. Got a 4.0 GPA? Cool. Got a Degree in Network Engineering? Awesome. So, got skills? No? NEXT!
Tell that to a masters or a PhD.
That's a different thing. Most place will accept a Bachelors or even an Associate. Some places will accept certifications. Also, depends on where you apply at. Some places won't even look at what your degrees are. Instead, they want to know what you can do.
How can you have a degree in network engineering but have no skill?
I was using it as in example, but trust me, I've seen it.
I was using it as in example, but trust me, I've seen it.
I'm guessing that they didn't take internships or pick a "concrete" major.

NEXT!
From what I've seen in my 3 years, there are a lot of people who put too much effort into education - that is, we've seen a lot of applicants with masters degrees and 4.0 GPA's, but during the interview they could barely differentiate a linked list from a hash table and could barely finish a fizzbuzz. When I was still the intern I was able to outperform applicants every time. It became a ritual for the interviewers to ask me the same questions as soon as the applicant left - and they said I did way better than those guys every time.

What is the pay like?
Indeed. This why I tell people sometimes that going to college doesn't mean shit anymore. Got a 4.0 GPA? Cool. Got a Degree in Network Engineering? Awesome. So, got skills? No? NEXT!
College still means a lot, its just in the game industry a lot of it seems pointless aside from maybe programming since its less about artistic ability and more about tech. The thing is, with game development you can show your skills and make a portfolio. You cant do that in a lot of fields until you actually land a job in it. So yeah, any college for arts in my mind seems kind of pointless, IF you are just going for the degree that is hoping it will carry you. Like my sister went to college for photography like every other fucking girl, except shes not shit but it being an art school she was put in with people who are. Her degree and grades dont really mean much, BUT she just landed her first actual serious photography job outside of freelancing after like 3 years and she probably wouldnt have gotten it without going to college. She got it because her boss(the one who hired her) went to the same school and both loved the same teacher, so she probably got it because of this which only happened because she went to school. So basically, if you are going to school for game development, stop focusing so much on your degree and GPA and instead focus more on networking(with people not internet) and making stuff. You never know if that scantily dressed stranger you crossed swords with in the bar bathroom was a just a random guy, or a Garry. But honestly you could probably learn more from reading about what you are interested in on the internet and reading interviews with devs and design docs, going to local developer meetups, and working on stuff on your spare time then you would from going to college for games.
