This would makes things 10 times easier and better.
I wonder if they're ever going to make the overlay not a piece of shit

Tabs are fucking amazing
tabs please

make the UI a series of tabs and we are 👌👌👌👌
The main thing I want to see with Steam's UI is for the Store and Community to not just be web browsers loading the webpages and actually be integrated into the UI itself. It would make them feel so much more fluid and less frustrating to use. The way the library tab works now should be extended to the rest of Steam, a layout that's integrated into the client, all it has to do is download the unique data for each game on the store, like review info, descriptions, screenshots, etc.

I just love how buggy and unstable the thing is, there's nothing better than having the entire steam overlay crash because the overlay's web browser didn't like something. I also love having to kill the steamwebhelper process when it shits the bed because when it hangs it just effectively renders the store/community/user tabs completely unresponsive and there seems to be no check in place to restart the process if that happens.

problem with this, with valve's current progression is how it manages it's betas and main channels.
Such a method you have suggested means that the interface will get very frequent updates to when valve develop a new interaction, which is what we get currently in the beta channel (because big picture mode is essentially using a system you suggest, web returns xml or whatever).
However, these are only pushed to the users on the regular channel every few months, meaning that new features, where they could be deployed as soon as possible, could be delayed for a number of weeks as other sections of the company would need to finish their work in development and sync up release schedules.
With teams being of different size within valve, more on the flexibilty of teams, this could end up a rather hard task, and that valve could need to shift their entire work style for the entire company, something I don't think would be necessary at this point on time, as many projects within valve are still underway.
The Web ui works because it keeps a very consistent interface to work with in both the website, and the desktop client, both of which run on the exact same instances (with modified data based on useragent), any updates are delivered on demand, and without the user having any input on client-side changes.
That being said, Origin updates suck

the current design is gross and reeks of 2010 and I'm sick of using 3rd party skins to make my eyes not bleed every time I open Steam
plus Origin had an actually nice revamp recently so it'd be a good response to competition.[/QUOTE]
Honestly i'd hate this kind of redesign and I think the new origin kind of sucks too.
Sure its much easier on the eyes but I prefer not having to blow the app up to my screen size to see more than 10 friends or 5 games, the whole 'WE MUST MAKE EVERYTHING HUGE' aesthetic is just annoying to me.
My current steam setup lets me see upwards of 23 games at a time without having to scroll, and having the friends section be a small separate section lets me keep up with everyone in the corner of my screen without needing the rest of the xboxhueg interface taking up valuable screen space.
I know it's the current design trend to stick every single function of a program into a single box on the screen because it has to be an all-inclusive ~app~ but I honestly prefer having a program give me the option to separate it into smaller chunks I can move around and select what I want to see.
OFGS or die:

That padding is hideous. Not sure why he's using a mouse with a touch interface.
I would be okay with a basic Windows application with a menu bar and a basic list to launch games.

Just do this with games instead. I don't even use the rest of the app - all that gets done in Chrome aka a proper browser.

funny you say that

Honestly, the standard Steam UI just clashes like nothing else with Big Picture mode, and at this point it's hard to care for the vanilla UI because it's so bland and awkward.
I just reinstalled Metro for Steam and I still feel it's better despite it basically trying to repurpose the metro-style windows interface for Steam.

A proper browser means customization. There are great extensions for Steam browsing, specifically.

Panorama would be great if they were to use it in the main UI imo

All I said was "this kind of direction", not straight up "they should use that guy's concept". You'd be lying through your teeth if you said the Steam client now is well designed. It's a dated mess with way too much unused space. It's such a weird feeling going from regular Steam to Big Picture because their styles are so radically different, and I wish they would kind of just modernize the brand itself. Even the Android app is garbage, it's just a web browser with a shitty chatting client.

All I want is an interface that's modernized, uses empty space nicely, and isn't a buggy, shitty mess. The Air skin is really close to what I would like but in the end, it's still just a skin that sits on top of Valve's. They physically can't provide more functionality.

If you think the bottom design is better than I completely disagree with you.
'uses empty space nicely' - that skin literally creates empty space and does nothing with it, look how little information is displayed compared to default.

I've used this skin for years and it serves me very well, also notice how I don't have it blown up to near 1920x1080? This takes up less than a fourth of my screen space yet delivers more information at a glance than your ideal skin does.
I personally think there's just info overload in general. I'd like for small mode to be the default at all times, and for everything else to be through the default browser.
Unpopular opinion here, but I like the current ui, never had any issues with it.

What I meant was the style that my ideal skin has. I know there's loads of pointless space. But what isn't there are weird gradients and an information overload. What I want is a nice inbetween that feels nice to use.
And sometimes, honestly, I don't want to see everything. The image you posted has dozens of links you will NEVER click, the workshop featurette that in my personal use, I've never clicked for any game, and unessicary icons next to the top 4 "tabs". The padding is really bad too. Sometimes all I want to see is the game info (hours/last played), a background screenshot, and see if any friends are playing.
Design itself is really subjective, so I don't want to bicker and complain about it anymore. A new, fresh interface from Valve would just be a really nice change.

I think the problem is less with people disliking it and more people wanting something new and refreshing. Just some don't realize that.

I'm fine with the current UI, but if it can be done better I'd love to have that.
