its made by valve, therefore its god tier
the fuck trackpads are terrible
Why in the name of Jah did you put your gaming PC in the living room?
Because it's deliverately designed to be put in the living room? Or did you just find out about the Steam machines?
I feel really horrible for anybody who plays fighting games on Steam.
If they have to use that controller, they're gonna lose every time.

I don't seem to recall any news about Valve casting all other controllers into the trash. We're talking about PCs here you should be able to use any controller you like.
Why in the name of Jah did you put your gaming PC in the living room?
You are missing the point of this entirely. All the announcements Valve has made over the past week have been to improve the way you can play PC games with the pros of console gaming. One of these things involves being able to sit down in your sofa and play a game on your tv.
You have complete freedom with this controller. If you don't like it, you can plug in a keyboard and mouse, a regular controller, or you can hack this one and give it d-pads, analog sticks or what have you.
Just plug a fighting stick and stop whining.
Just plug a fighting stick and stop whining.
Some people are pad players.
What if all they have is this trackpadded Steam controller? What if they don't know how to hack on D-pads and such?
They're 100%, grade-A buttfucked.
This is a controller that seems to be designed for action-type games like shooters and nothing else.
It all comes down to the fact that it's a useless gimmick that makes more problems than it causes.

Good job ignoring what I said. Just plug in a fighting stick, no hacking required. And besides, no controller is as good as a fighting stick, so what you're saying is an issue with all consoles.
The only people who thinks this looks good are the Valve fanboys who love everything they do.

Then use a different controller, Valve's controller seems to be designed with the precision of PC's standard input devices in mind, not the analogue control you get with your average controller.
The only people who thinks this looks good are the Valve fanboys who love everything they do.
Nobody here said this looked good.
People like you, on the other hand, think looks is a synonym for functionality, which is just as stupid, if not more, than blindly thinking this looks good.
The only people who thinks this looks good are the Valve fanboys who love everything they do.
I love how you just assume this without knowing jack shit about anyone who actually thinks this has potential. I absolutely hate that Valve is drifting away from making their own games and I hate that Valve has the tendency to slap some form of micro-transactions any game they do manage to make, but apparently I'm a Valve fanboy who loves everything they do because I don't think their controller is the worst thing in the world.
The only people who thinks this looks good are the Valve fanboys who love everything they do.
I'm not a Valve fanboy, but I think this looks like it might work nicely.
Where are ergonomics when your extending your thumb across the entire controller just to press a button? A button that's in a square formation so there is no up, down, left, right? Only four corners along the entirety of the middle of the controller?
Don't tell me to shut up unless you know what you're talking about.
His thumbs look pretty relaxed there, I don't see it being hard to reach over to those buttons, though the top ones may be a problem.
Honestly I kinda like the idea of the trackpads. They can be used like gamepad control sticks (and clicked like them) or used 'like a trackpad' when a game expects you to use the mouse. At any rate I'll definitely be picking one up when they come out proper, looks really interesting.
"Works with every Steam game."
I'll believe it when I can play Meepo in DOTA on it.
But this is good news for me. I was gonna buy a 360 controller to play Dark Souls, now I don't have to.
Good god this thing looks awful. Even if its not uncomfortable (which it looks like it is, but I haven't used it so I cant say for sure), it looks ugly as fuck.

When you're playing video games, 90% of the time, you spend your time looking at the video game itself. What's it matter? If it feels good, do it.

Personally I want something to look nice when I put down the money for it. It doesn't need to, but it helps. And like I said it looks uncomfortable. That's my primary concern, not the look of it. it looks too fat, like a Madcatz controller gone wrong... or gone worse rather.
Besides, not saying this is your views on it, but people say the Xbone looking like a VCR is a bad thing. Why is this looking awful not? Because its made by Valve of course! And Valve is infallible!
So I read through all of the comments here and this is what I have to say. The moment I saw the picture, my mind thought "Uh oh!" I do however want to believe Valve can make a good controller, but I'm going to reserve all judgement until many have used it and can say how it feels and performs.
See, that was a lot more reasonable and I didn't I have to flex my ego by making fun of other's opinions.
Did you even READ the page?
Those 4 buttons will be used for functions that aren't frequently used, and even then, you have 12 buttons aside from those, 8 of which can be accesed without lifting your thumbs, so I don't see your point.
That's two more non-thumb buttons than the xbox and ps controllers. This fact alone will make many people very happy. There's a lot you can do with two extra non-thumb buttons.
As for the trackpads, I don't know how well they can emulate thumbstick control but I'm suspending my judgement until we hear some real impressions. Who knows, maybe in 3 years the 2nd revision XBOne and PS4 controllers will adopt trackpad thumsticks, who knows.
Why are people getting so upset about this anyway? You have complete freedom with this controller. If you don't like it, you can plug in a keyboard and mouse, a regular controller, or you can hack this one and give it d-pads, analog sticks or what have you.
the only reason i'm remotely upset is because if this same design was show by Microsoft or Sony, everyone would more than likely be unanimously bashing it. but truly, i have not intent on purchasing another gamepad in general, so i'm not really worried about it.

why are you making empty statements like this??
why are you making empty statements like this??
what do you mean by empty?
well i for one am interested to see this
i don't know if it will work but its different and its weird and stuff like this is what encourages good innovation instead of the same controller design every time
furthermore shark bones i think you are trying way too passionately to aggressively attack a controller its sort of sad
I actually think the controller itself looks very nice, yes it looks odd but it still looks cool and different.
If people actually read up on how it works and what is included in it then they will see it is actually a very nice controller in a technical sense, they are obviously putting a lot of effort into it so it at least deserves a try before bashing it to hell and back based on the look.
Know what the best bit is? If you dont like it then just plug a PS3/360 controller in, problem solved! I guarantee that there will be people who prefer playing with this, so there's no point in trying to speak on behalf of everyone when in reality you are just stating your own opinions. I have always hated controllers for 90% of games, but I am actually interested in giving FPS a go on this.
I'm more intrigued than anything else by this concept. I want to get my hands on it to see how well it would work. My knee-jerk is that it looks silly and stupid, but when I think about it more, I feel that Valve wouldn't put something like this out without being supremely confident about it.
2014 will be an interesting year.

Or 2013 if you are lucky.
I read the website page about it and it seems interesting, I'd like to see how it would work playing something like Sword of the Stars with it. But it really looks terrible for playing fighting games.
I can see this controller not working well with games like GTA especially since you have to tap the bottom button to sprint.
I can see this controller not working well with games like GTA especially since you have to tap the bottom button to sprint.
Well, no, the trackpads controls are customizable, so i assume you'd be able to map it in a way that that wouldnt be a problem.
